Glad you were able to recover the buck, and what a fine buck he is! Hunting is full of woulda, coulda, shouldas... that's why it's hunting. My uncle had a buck eaten on during the night. They weren't sure if it was coyotes (likely) or a cat, but they were able to salvage some of it like you the following morning. Congrats on a beautiful trophy!

I had this happen in unit 62 only 12 miles or so from where I live. I'm a meat hunter and when I saw the reaction on your face to what had happen to the meat that really hit home for me as I could see the meat was your main concern and that's how it should be. I now have way more respect for this channel knowing it's not all about the horns.

My buddy shot a deer with his bow this January. The deer ran maybe 80 yards and died behind some brush. (AZ landscape in the flats). Coyotes had already eaten one of the back quarters with 20-30 min before they got to it

Just an observation, its not always the best thought process to rely on video to see shot placement. As a hunter, you should know and have the confidence in your ability. If its too dark or you are short on light, don't take the shot. Now, before people start hating on me - When i was younger, i shot a 6 point bull that was a special permit draw tag. I took a 30 yard shot and one that i thought was a good shot. I hit low, in the brisket. Only had roughly twenty minutes of shooting light when i shot. I gave him an hour and went to tracking blood. Long story short, we went back and got lanterns to see better, ended up pushing him three canyons over only to find the bears had gotten to him before we got to him. Mother nature feeds itself, sometimes to the dismay of us hunters. Again, this was only 23 years ago. I have learned a lot since then- when in doubt, back out. You made the right call and that is a great buck.
@MuleyFreak

It was what we thought at the time a "gimmie" shot - especially something as weird as what happened to us. Bottom line, hunting is imperfect and things can and will go wrong even in perfect scenarios. I would take or have Aaron take that shot again 10/10. It was close in proximity and I trust Aaron's marksmanship skills, but things happen as you know! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and we appreciate your support on the channel. God bless! ~Erik

Aaron congratulations on finding your coyote buck. It's a hard thing to accept. and find peace with what was left. I have left a few different deer or elk overnight in the woods due to it being last light and just enough time to gut it out and come back with help in the morning all those times I would leave my coat draped over the animal's body and it always worked nothing ever chewed on any of them. But then I don't know if anything ever got close enough to find any of them. Thanks for sharing your hunt and take care🙏 Marty

@@MuleyFreak it happens to the best of us I switched to Barnes LRX due to my personal preference of almost always having a pass through. Here in the southeast, most of us don’t shoot past 400 yards and most of the shots are around 50-100 so to shoot my 300 PRC I wanted something that would stay together and punch an exit hole.

Great film guys, I know all too well how destructive packs of coyotes and wolves can be on game. We used to have big herds of elk and good mule deer numbers in N Idaho just like you filmed on this hunt. Those days are looong gone unfortunately, all thanks to Colorado's newest parasite, the wolf.

Last season just before end of shooting light for the day, my 10yr old daughter shot her first deer which was a 5x6 with double brow tines. @@MuleyFreak this past season I only had 2 days to archery elk hunt due to the fire here in Elk, WA and she was with me when we called a bull into 8 feet on day 2. He came right in and was damn near drooling on the top of her head. He had no idea we were there. He circled down wind of us and stepped out again at 49 yards and that was all it took. I think that moment was even more special for her considering our circumstances with the fire and the fact we only had 2 days on public land.

Aaron. You made the decision you felt was best, be proud of that. Also, good job on taking what meat was left. Not too many anti-hunters will watch your channel, but folks must understand the intentions of a moral hunter. Thanks for representing the community well. Lastly, as much as losing meat is a heartbreaker, the ecosystem greatly benefits by consumption. There are literally high mountain streams where salmon guts are dropped into the water by helicopter. The rotting salmon give back to bears, small fish and vegetation in the water. You're a good hunter.

Thanks for your comment, Andrew! The trophy for us is the entire animal and when we aren't able to harvest the meat that we took it's a little depressing, but given the information we had the night we all felt it was the right decision and would make the same decision again with the same information. After-all, like you said, nothing goes to waste in nature!

That sucks, but 90% of the time hunters end up pushing animals which results in animals dead miles away, suffering or no retrieval at all knowing the animal is dead somewhere not recovered, all this in your mind knowing and witnessing and hearing these stories you make the decision to mark last blood and go back next day. Unfortunately sometimes other predators beat you to it. When other animals beat you to your animals it’s out of your control, but had you pushed him and lost him that would be on you and worse feeling. Better luck next season
@MuleyFreak

Giving what we knew at the time with the information we had at the time I think all of us feel the same way and that's that we would back out again! We were more likley than not to push that buck off the ground we had permission on to either another piece of private or a be a public where are tag wasn't good for. Hunting isn't perfect and it's far from it. It's all about learning and trying to be better. Happy to have you on the channel, Scott.
