We are in Melbourne selling my Mother-in-Law's house. While traveling through Sydney I was given this radio by a relative. I have some spare time so I will have a look at it. I don't have much equipment but we can check it out and see if it works. Later next month I was given two other radios, I'll have a quick look at them as well.

Lucky Dave, 2 out of three radios working, not bad 👍 The Paillard is Swiss made BTW, was an upmarket brand back then. I could not help notice the beautiful tortoiseshell pattern on the Mullard bakelite when it was wet. There is a stuff for sale here in Germany called "Owatrol" and they also sell a plastic reviver for car bumpers and such. Makes weathered bakelite look like new because it fills up the pores and then goes hard. That Plain Jane Mullard could become a real beaut... BTW, let me know when you are home again, there is something set to go 🙂 Cheers from Deutschland, have a safe trip..

I have a book called " Everymans wireless by f j Cam " And a Oldham press from millions of years ago. The valves were very odd looking, some had screw terminals on the side of the base, really odd. Different but not. The capacitors were oblong boxes with terminals on the top, i think ill stay with modern solder types. Sorry Waffle mode lol.

Hi David, those Mullards and the Philips equivalent perform well, but for some reason the Mullard cases go bad, The old shoe polish usually works! At least the dial glass isn't broken - they usually are. Should be easy to reproduce. Funny I've been fixing a Swedish made Philips this afternoon. Your Swed looks to have Philips knobs, I don't suppose you'll still be here next Sunday (7 April 2024) as we are having a big auction (250 items) you are welcome to come along.

A shame (in my opinion) not to sort the dial glass in the Mullard, some spit and polish would sort the cabinet and cloth (he says, confidently). They would have it warm over there, only, of course, applies to our welcome or when comparing UK practices and a certain other country who chill glasses so much that ice appears in the beer (seemingly unaffecting the appalling taste, strength etc.).

Dial glasses are hard to do and the cabinet might look OK with a bit of work. We chill our beers here and the beer tastes great, completely different beers here compared to the UK though. Of course you do have chilled beers as well like Fosters etc 🙂

Hi David. Great seeing you enjoying a Bishop's Finger over there! On a cautionary note you probably know care needs to be taken when using abrasives on bakelite due to asbestos commonly having been used within it. Only in later years and as countries became aware of the hazards was its use eventually phased out in bakelite production.

Hi Neil, sorry for the confusion regarding Shango. I flashed an explanation on screen when I said it. Shango066 is a electronics repairer on KZbin who works outdoors in his yard with all the noise and odd lighting that goes with it. I have a grab and go kit of tools I take with me when I travel, it comes in handy. It has sockets and spanners, screwdrivers, DMM... stuff like that. I use it every time, someone will ask me to have a look at something when I visit them 😄 Cheers!

Friends invite me over for supper and by the way, could you bring a few tools for our repair or renovation!...figuring that buttering me up with "Bangers" (sausages on the BBQ) or steak would encourage me to reno their bathroom while i am there. Hello Larry, Mullard were based in the UK and were wholly owned by Philips. They were one of the biggest valve manufacturers in Europe so it's no wonder they were known for they valves and not radios outside of the UK. This radio is a rebadged Philips Australia. This is typical Melbourne weather, hot winds from the desert push temps over 104F then the wind swings around and comes across the bay and the temp drop 60F in 15 minutes. It's very uncomfortably hot then uncomfortably cold 🙄🙂

@DavidTipton101 it's amazing how the US clings to the imperial system of inches and Fahrenheit. My brain works in imperial then after a hiccup it converts to metric. My wife refuses to learn the metric system so I know how 80% of the population in the US is thinking. As an HVAC service tech and mechanic, I wish we would just rip that band-aid off and convert to metric. My wife already thinks it's cold in the house though, if we changed the thermostats to Celsius she'd accuse me of freezing her out 😁
