Kevin, make sure you have at least a R13 rated insulation on the walls and a R19 on the roof of your building otherwise that AC unit will never stop running and won't cool down the shop. Closed cell spray foam will be your best bet and will also help reduce air intrusion into the building, the better it is sealed up the less you have to cool and dehumidify. Also for the roof given its metal, if it isn't already coated doing a Elastomeric thermal barrier paint in white will drastically reduce the thermal load transmitted to your building and thus reduce the load on the AC unit.
@justaguynamedmax82073 жыл бұрын
I second that. And I have nearly 20 years experience in construction. Too many people over look insulation when heating and cooling shops and garages, and without it, you are just burning money.
@justaguynamedmax82073 жыл бұрын
It looks like the ceiling is insulated(maybe justa vapor barrier?). The walls are covered so hopefully they are already insulated.

Well said, I'm in the energy conservation industry, and it sounds like you are too! I second all that you said.
@leftyeh64953 жыл бұрын
Here in the north we're up to R28 minimum in walls and R50 in attics. You could spray that with closed cell and get pretty aggressive depending on how many 2" passes you are willing to pay for and wait on. $50k in foam will pay for itself in a few years depending on how cold you want it.

Kevin, I would have the duck work hanging about midway between the floor & ceiling, bc cool air will go towards the floor & hot air rises. So you may not actually be cooling as much air as you think if you put the duck work middle ways & may not cost as much to cool the shop. I would definitely invest in air conditioning bc you will enjoy your work more & be less stressed in a cool environment.

Don't know if this works for your setup but you may consider spot cooling instead of cooling the entire shop. You can install a couple AC units with ducts you can point into the areas where people spend the most time. Will give them a lot of relief and be a lot easier on the budget. We take that approach in industrial buildings where its not practical to condition the entire space.

Kevin I’ve done 3-ton mini-splits in garages for customers and friends and if you mount them not too high they only cool the air under them and not up above in the rafter spaces…saving you money. Plus with 20seer machines(or higher) they don’t run up as much an electric bill as central ducted stuff does. My installs aren’t nearly as expensive as people think-Way better than coolers and blowers. (They also heat in the Winter just as good as they cool in the Summer)

We have a paint booth as well, but only 1 lift right now. The HVAC didn't hurt my electric bill more than 60 a month. Air compressor costs me more than the HVAC . Heat is from the heat pump and you probably didn't need as much heat as we do so- your costs go down. We ran duct work "open" in shop a foot above the lifts, as part of cooled/heated space, didn't have to wrap the pipes and that saved money as well. I did add more lighting as we missed the sunshine. Biggest surprise though was welding gas bottles lasting longer . Negatives have been : needed more lighting, a bit more cleaning as nothing blows out . Hope this is some small help. Great channel, great work man.
