Today I would like to showcase:
A resilient multi item sorter with a compact frontend ("B-MIS")
Key characteristics:
• Sorts 64 & 16 stackables. Unstackables go to unsorted.
• Different item types can be assigned to one chest (no slot reservation)
• Has 42 categories in a 16 wide area (one chunk build), allowing it to handle 2000+ item types
• Highly unload resistant
• Build can be rushed early in the first week of survival
• Reduced block palette (less than 27 item types): no silk touch materials like ice, no slime, no mangrove roots,...
• The system can be used stand-alone or as part of a bigger storage solution
• Common configuration mistakes by a user (over,- under- and double assignment) don't produce fatalities
• Speed highly depends on input. Expect 3K/hour.
Build & Running notes:
• ! Needs to be chunk aligned
• Litematica is recommended
• Floor before the system needs to be elevated by one, so all chests can be reached.
• Designed & tested in 1.20. Likely also works in 1.16+
• ! Before changing the category configuration, turn the system off and await shut down (use maintenance hatch)

Thanks for this build. This is an amazing item sorting system. The best about it is also especially in the survival world it is very compact, but still can sort a lot of things. So it is also perfect for the beginning in the game, and the more items you get, you can expand this build. Really amazing!

OMG! This is the item sorter that I've been looking for and wanting, literally for YEARS! I'm on a Realm, so Litematica isn't an option, but I've downloaded the world and have been analyzing it to figure out how to build it in my survival world. Congratulations! I'm a curmudgeon who never likes or subscribes to anything, but I've done both here. Only 190 likes and this has been up for three months! That's a CRIME. I do hope you'll record a block for block tutorial on how to build it. Don't let anybody else beat you to it and steal your thunder. This thing is AMAZING!

You can add Litematica though a client-side Fabric mod. I am playing on a realm with Litematica right now. Hope this helps some

@@KV_85U Thank you! I will definitely look into that. I had Googled, “Can I use Litematica on Realms.” and gotten a resounding NO….and didn’t go any further. Last night, I finished building mine in my families Survival world, where I play with my kids. As I fully expected to happen it doesn’t work properly. I would have been shocked if had’t made mistakes in the build. Now I’m struggling to troubleshoot a system that I admittedly don’t entirely understand.

This is some pretty awesome stuff! And exactly what I was looking for. If you made a build tutorial for this I bet it would blow up. The litematic schematic looks pretty helpful though. One question: when I pasted the schematic into my creative world, I broke it by right-clicking a fence gate at the top that presumably let the minecart drop down early. Is there a way to fix that?

Hey nikoquizzer8432, I am just a bit afraid that a block by block tutorial is too risky. If an error is made on the way than it's hard to debug. Much easier to validate a build with litematica. If you broke the top fence gate, just place it down again. If you manually accidentally opened it, just close it.

Hello again, I actually built this in my survival world a couple of days ago and it works great! However I am super curious about 2 aspects of it that I can't figure out I would love to know: Why is there a Barrel with 1 item in it above a hopper with 5 single items in it near the minecart's station, as well as the hopper facing downwards near the input's buffer chest that has 5 of the #configuration items in it? For the life of me I can't work out what they are doing.

Hey @poppinlochnesshopster3249, the reason for it is that the hopper minecart is very fast (1 check per game tick) while the detector rail comparator combination is too slow. The extra barrel with a filled hopper provide updates continuously, so that the detector rail + comparator work precisely. I ran the following tests successfully: •• Moving in and out of the area to cause gradual lazy chunks and no-processing chunks (n=17000) •• Random teleports away to cause instant unloads of the system (n=7000) •• Delayed reload of the area to await auto save (n=1000) From a statistical perspective, one could say: There is no error to be expected on 1000 unloads (with a 99.5% confidence interval)

Can you do this for a single or a smaller amount of chests? I am looking for something maybe 5 layers wide and two or three layers high stacked on top of each other.

Does this design work next to itself? Can two neighboring chunks have this design inside of them without interfering with eachother? So that both modules have their chests facing in the same direction (in my situation, toward the isle of my storage hall)

EDIT: I didn't build it all within one chunk because complaining is easier than following instructions. EDIT 2: I got the thing to work after I actually built it the way @Borbarad13 did in the video. I rebuilt the whole thing in survival but it continues to be unreliable. Will sort fine for a while but I eventually find that a bunch of filler blocks will be missing from one of the chests.

Good questions. No... I did not build it all within one chunk... because I'm dumb. I'm playing on Iris but otherwise Vanilla. I'll try loading up the world in the latest vanilla release and see if that fixes it.@@Borbarad13

Hello! Thank u for the build, I built it on my multiplayer server and it worked! except the part where the minecart takes in full stack of items and continue with it until the stack makes its way to the overflow chest. I checked and it looks like the minecraft doesnt drop an item to the returning chest beside it at the load section beneath the input chest. I play on vannila server and built it on one chunk, what is the problem?

Hey @elordivker9054, seems something is off with the 64 detection, which is located in the bottom section of the system. Can you check the barrel and the hopper near the minecart loading area? The barrel should have at least one item in it and the hopper under the barrel should not be full, but all 5 slots blocked with a stackable. If there is no error there, it would be good to validate the whole bottom section against the schematic if you use litematica. Hi, this seems like the system I have been looking for. I do have a few practical question. -What happens if an item is entered in a filter chest, but the chests it is supposed to go in to are full. Does it break the system or just go to the overflow? - I like to have my storage exactly like I want it, so I like to fill all chest slots with what I want to go in there. Is it possible to do that? for example, have the top chest be all logs and the bottom chest be all the things you can make from it. But in the 2 chests combined, there will be no empty slots? Thank you. And also thank you for making something that someone pretty new to redstone can do, without getting completely overwhelmed or having to build something you REALLY don't understand. Thanks to your explanation I feel like I understand it and will be able to troubleshoot it.

Hey ilsecoulier6449, if a chest is full and more items come in then the extra items go into the generic/unsorted chest on the right hand side without breaking the system. That generic chest needs to be emptied on a regular basis though, so that things don't start to backlog there. The pre-filling would not work as described unfortunately as the system would try to fill the lower chest first and if it can't, then the hopper behind it fills up next before the chest above is even considered. You can try and play around with pre-filling the lower chest partially though (e.g. reserve some spaces for logs, some spaces for planks,..)

@@Borbarad13 that's clear, thanks for the reply. I think I might pre-sort just the top 2 rows of the chest or something. But if not, it's only 2 chests per filter, so it will be fine. That's what I didn't like about the bigger systems like this. Well, and the complexity

I'm going to attempt this. I've got the chunk dug out and have litematica set up, so it's within the chunk borders and I have the first layer showing to begin. I'm gathering materials now to create it. I just want to be sure that you said it's okay to use different blocks for the structure blocks, like the deepslate? Also pumpkins rather than jack-o-lanterns? I may have those things, I just wanted to be sure.

Yeah, you can use different structure blocks (they should be functionally the same of course). E.g. deepslate for the facade or as the replacement for smooth stone/stone bricks is perfectly fine or. Any solid conductive block works instead of jack-o-lanterns in this build (e.g. pumpkins).

Thanks KZbin for not notifying me I got a reply to my comment 😆 I did end up building your sorter using litematica, but I realized yesterday that I did not build it within the chunk's y coordinates, even though I thought I had mapped out the border, so I'm going to have to move it a few blocks down 😢. Shouldn't be too hard of a move since I can just move each layer down at a time. There could be an easier way, but I'm not aware of it. I'm just going to remove the layers and use the easyplace mode since I'll have the objects in my inventory!

Great sorter, nice and compact. I'm sort of new to redstone and cant seem to get it to work though. Except for the 500'ish wrong states on the redstone in the schematic (only on and off) have double and even triple checked anything, the only thing i can think of that may be the cause of it not working for me, are the rails. Specifically the part where the hopper minecart sits under the input chest. I cant seem to make the rail the minecart sits ontop of be on an incline plane. I'f i remove part of the cobble wall and place another rail there to force it to be an incline that way, the normal rail right next to the hopper cart stops being bent. Any solution you could share with someone who doesn't have much redstone knowledge at al?

Hey sebastianpehrson3200, the key to correctly place the sloped rail is to temporaily remove some extra blocks around it and fix the rail in a sloped position by providing addional temporary powered rails on both sides. Remove the temporary extra rails at very end, when the other rails match the litematic. Regarding the 500 incorrect states - Did you set up all filters in the back already? I really like this build. But what would i do for bulk storage? I have like 15 double chest with stone. Do you have a smart solution or should i just have bulk storage next to this

maybe you could just attach a reg item sorter to the overflow chest that would filter out the stone to a separate bulk storage

Hi, loved the design, built it last month. Everything is verified tru schematic. In a single chunk. Sometimes it lost configuration items and stopped working but it sorta went away. Then the dropper Minecraft wouldnt stop running, only picking up 1-3 items before going round again. Even when it had no items to pick up. Do you have a fix for this? I have torn down the system and rebuilding it again (moved bases) hopefully it wont start bugging up. Thanks for the good build, and the helpful comments and patience.

hey Desnhauos, the quickest and easiest support I could provide is via discord (not sure if that is an option for you) - my username is the same as here. The most common reason for a non-returned config item is that the item type was assigned multiple times, which would not be allowed. For the continuous cart running - check the bottom trap door and it's surrounding redstone to confirm that everything is correct.

Hey Borbarad13 So I finished building your itemsorter today. Now I have a question for you. Beneath the Input chest is a hopper leading into another chest, and beneath that hopper is another one going straight down. But beneath that one is nothing. In your viedo its visible at 1:38. I assume the hopper should face into the chest next to it? Also, I like your build a lot, everything works like a charm

Hey Aeris, that hopper should point into nothing (not even towards the rail). When you configure the chests in the back, then the renamed configuration items should never be put into the input chest. If you however per accident put some of those into the input chest, then the hopper, which points into nothing, captures those. That hopper is an extra optional failsafe.

at 0:34 you open the input chest and there is a icon next to it with some info what mod is it and what does it contribute towards designs? Also great build

Hey Paulfyre, it's a resource pack (guide), which I actually no longer use. It wouldn't help with this build. It showed how much you have to fill a container to get a certain signal strength.

I’m curious what makes this design more robust against unloading or server restarts compared to other multi item sorters like Rapscallions or Maizuma’s multi item sorters. I have been specifically looking for more robust designs that are more robust since I have basemates that will be less careful with unloading the system or have it running during server restarts

Hey Dpostel, there are quite a few pitfalls when it comes to unloading and lazy chunks in general. For example, when a cart rolls over an unlocked hopper then exactly 1 item is taken out of the cart if the chunk is nicely entity processing. If the chunk becomes a lazy chunk at that given moment, however, more items will be pulled out. As a designer, it's important to work around these surprising changes of behavior so that the contraption is as reliable as possible. In addition, a ton of testing is required. This system has successfully been tested 17000 times against "Moving in and out of the area to cause gradual lazy chunks and no-processing chunks" and I use it as well in a survival world, where the server restarts are beyond my control, so the system frequently runs into forced unloads.

Hey, the design works great, though with one flaw (might be something i did wrong) when adding items to the hopper minecart (0,19,1,1,1) it detects for one item. But when it sends a single item through it comes back with 2 of the blockers missing (0,17,1,1,1) and i can't seem to figure out why. The same problem occours when using items that "are worth" more than 1 item (E pearls etc) i would LOVE to hear a fix, since it's probably just a repeater set to a tick to much somehere

Hey cybl6070, when blocker items are pulled out of the cart, then something is incorrect in the unloading area on the top of the contraption. Could you double check the comparators and repeaters up there (right settings) Also at least one composter is prefilled, which is necessary, for one of the comparators. Kindly check that as well.

Hi, so I've noticed that in one column there are 3 categories to sort, if I am making this sorter I would not want it so high. Can i take off a section or does it need to be as tall as it is in the video? Would it still work if the top row of item sorters were removed?

It's possible, but it requires some adjustment. I recommend to keep the total height of the build as it will make validation of everything easier, but then remove the chest pairs on the top and their hoppers (theirs hoppers only!). Then you can redecorate the top part and you should be good to go.

Is this system able to handle overflows? (I.e: A chest is fully filled?)

Overflow will go to the overflow/unsorted chest on the bottom right. It's expect that the player regularly checks that chest so that overflow can not backlog into the system. If you expect bigger amounts of overflow, then it could be a good idea to funnel the bottom right chest (e.g. via hopper) into a set of more chests (e.g. underground) for a bigger capacity.

You mention it needing to be chunk aligned several times but don't say why, is it just in the case of unloading? IE a chunk loader nearby and the chunk alignment no longer matters?

Hey poppinlochnesshopster3249, if you can guarantee chunk loading then the alignment can be broken. In my experience though, unloading will happen at some point of time (e.g. if the loaders fails or the server restarts).

It's workarounds but for high volume materials like cobble or iron from a farm I'd probably just run the output through a seperate. item-filter based bulk storage system next to it. If 2 double chests are too little then 3 or 4 are likely not enough aswell. Alternatively you can always manually chuck some stuff into shulkers. I wonder about the possibility of adding more chests too though, just didn't want to keep this idea to myself.

actually 3-4 would be enough, Im thinking stuff like wood, you would want for example all of your oak type in a chest and 2 double chest is too small, but making a bulk storage wouldnt work for all the stairs, slab and whatnot

this is one of the more complex things Ive built, and it doesnt seem to be working. Ive filtered all chests to the correct amounts, all blocks are correct according to litematica, I put the right number of filter items in the minecart, barrel, and hopper, and its turned on. items flow directly into the minecart then just sit there and nothing happens. I looked at the world download too and I dont see anything different, so Idk what to do. if I break the iron trapdoor holding the minecart, it will run the entire track, but is taking the filter item im testing with, and is putting all items in overflow/unsorted.

hey sylermurphree7477, could you please double check that all configuration chests have the right signal strength - it should be possible to see if the hopper that leads into the config chest is looked via redstone torch. Hi! This sorter seems pretty nice (a lot of nice-to-have safety features for example), however, I wonder how fast can it sort items? According to your demo, if I have followed properly the video, it took to sort 2 snowballs, 38 diamonds and 3 yellow glass (which the input is at 0:36) a total of 1:38 (came back at 2:14 to 3 yellow glass sorted), which would mean a total of 43 items in 98 seconds, or 1 item every 2.25 seconds. Could it be made quicker? I am asking this because if I am not mistaken, a bunch of StorageTech's community multi item sorters sorts an item every 10 game ticks at most (or 2 items per seconds, or 4x this speed at minimum) and it would be nice to have something this evolved safety-wise that is almostt as fast as the others.

By the way, I have read your description, which states "Expect 3000/hr", but the math doesn't add up when I do it based on the video. 3000 items per hour would be 1.2 items per seconds, and based on the video, it was double that.. thus why I asked :)

Hey PunkR0ckz09, the average speed will highly depend on the input since the cart takes batches. 20 cobblestone would be sorted faster, then 1 cobblestone + 1 dirt. Also the rate in the video is lower than the actual rate since I moved out of render distance a few times (e.g. check 1:55), where the system was unloaded or in lazy chunks. If you want/need this to be faster, then I suggest to run a classical fixed item sorter (e.g. for the most common 50 types) upfront. It can be good to connect a chunk loader. While a chunk loader wouldn't make the system itself faster, more work would be done (even in your absence).

@@Borbarad13 I have thought of something last night that could possibly improve the speed quite a bit. Instead of using 1 minecart, I believe you should use 2. The first one would be to find where the item has to go, the second would be to drop the entirety of its content. You would probably need an item defragmenter or something like that so it gets all of the same items in its inventory instead of random ones, but that could drastically improve the sorter as it could unload 5 stacks all at once instead of 50-ish items, doing its round, 50, doing its round, etc.

I love this build plan - I've looked a LOTS of multi item sorters and this is by far the most compact and useable without using too much space, obscure items, or having to travel too far for some of the chests. However, I've tried building it twice now and can't get it to work. I used the Litematica schematic (first time I've tried using that mod) and both times it verifies that there are no missing/wrong/extra blocks. However, there are over 500 wrong states. I've checked all of them and it is all power states - the item is oriented in the right direction and/or placed on the right surface and the railways are oriented correctly, but the power levels are wrong. On my second try I did see the #22 filter and the attached hopper/barrel and filled them as directed, and also found the 2 composters which needed a 4 and 2 fill level, which I did. I can't find any other issues. I noticed when I flip the on/off lever the attached gate opens/shuts, but the one to the interior of the machine does not change. Any idea what areas I might look into that might be causing a problem? I know it can be hard without seeing it first-hand, just curious if you have any ideas.

Hey Michael, thanks for reaching out. If there are so many validation errors, then the most likeliest cause is that the configuration chests in the back do not have the right fill-level. Ideally you go through all of those chests and make sure they are right at the edge of signal strength 2 (you can test this by removing and re-adding one of the configuration items. The redstone torch behind should flicker). Litematica also has an option to view the contents of litematic - this could help to verify that you set up the containers correctly. @@Borbarad13 Wow, thanks for the quick response. That definitely fixed most of the problems - I had been waiting to see if I had set it up correctly before going throug the tedium of making and placing all the blockers, but it makes sense that those would be needed immediately. I still have 14 bad states - all in the chain along the back on the bottom from the target block over to the hoppers facing towards the chest near the minecart. I can try to reach you on Discord Thursday if that doesn't make much sense. I did try putting something in the input after configuring a chest just in case to see if it wasn't really a problelm, but it just got stuck in that hopper facing downwards from the input chest. I just played around with changing the order I placed the redstone torches on those target blocks and when I changed which one I placed first it actually all verified which is great! However, the input items still just sit in the hopper. I can't seem to see what that hopper is supposed to go to - it's facing downwards without anything under it, but it verifies according to the schematic

@@Borbarad13 Nevermind - finally got it working after checking it out on your world load again - noticed that downward-facing hopper had the 5 config items in it. Working awesome now - what an incredibly complex build. Thanks again for your hard work and help!

@@michaelhoeppner3307Hey Michael, The hopper facing downwards is a little safeguard. The renamed blocker items from the configuration chest must never be put into the input chest. If you were to accidentally put a few into the input chest, then the hopper would pick those up without damaging the system.

Hey how much can i change blocks in the build especially Chests and hoppers? I would like to remove the input chest and replace it with one building block and the output chest i would like to shorten by one chest and remove the block below the chest to replace it with a hopper to connect it to the rest of my storage. Also i would like to deaktivate the lamp for the output.

Hey @jonathanniklas9051, generally you can rewire the input chest to different location without complications. You can also shorten or redirect the output chest. For the details you would need to check the build. In the world download I also have multiple modules connected, there you can also check how I rewired the input and outputs. The lamp can also be removed (and its wiring) - it's just cosmetic/for information.

The barrel needs to contain 1 (stackable) item. Any will do. The hopper below will need 5 other stackable items across all it's inventory slots.

Hi there. I built this using Litematica schematic but when I run it, the hopper minecart with the #22 filterw 0,19,1,1,1 config loses two of the config items so it comes back with 0,17,1,1,1 After that, it sometimes continues to run and sort a few items but then just stops until I put two config items back in. Then it will start sorting again and immediately lose those two config items again. Any idea what is going on? I'm chunk aligned and as far as I can tell, am missing nothing from the schematic. The config in the chests is correct and all my torches behind the config chests are lit. Thanks

Hey ashleydowling8153! could you please re-check the top section, where the minecart is unloaded, against the litematic? Especially, the settings of the comparators and if the comparator has a composter nearby that the composter has the right level. A few ideas: 1) I'll hook up a bell to the fence gate so it's easier to hear it activate when doing maintainence. Fence gates can only be heard from about 16 blocks away while bells reach up to 32 blocks and stay pretty loud until they suddenly disappear. Note blocks do go further, reaching 48 blocks, but IMO they aren't actually easier to hear due to their gradual drop-off. My testing might be off by a block or two but those distance numbers should be pretty exact. 2) I'll probably add an automatic no-brain input system I designed a while ago. No idea what you'd call it officially but here's how it works: - All items are thrown into the input, both loose items and shulkers - Any shulkers get sorted out and placed in an unloader - Loose items get funneled past - Shulkers get unloaded and their output funneled into the loose item stream - Empty shulkers get thrown into their own output so they don't mix with other unstackables I sadly lost the world I build my first version but I'm pretty sure that I remember how it works. It's not pretty, poorly optimized, only ever worked at about 1x hopper speed and regularly had issues with the item filters I used in it but it might work much better as an input for this multi-sorter. 3) I'll probably add some fast, filter-based bulk storage to the input for stuff like cobble. Less chance to break things than when adding it to the output and I might get away with designs using more than than 1x hopper speeds by adding a big buffer inbetween the two storage systems. Basicly: No brain input → Bulk Storage → Multi-Storage ↳ Empty Shulker Boxes

Hey asgdhgsfhrfgfd1170! 1) The bell is a great idea! I was testing with different sound effects, but eventually just settled with the gate to not inflate the required block palette. If you have a bell at hands, that should work better! 2)+3) A proper per-sorter that handles unstackables and unloads shulkers is a great addition. Also a hopper speed fixed item sorter for the most common 20-30 type beforehand helps to increase overall storage capacity and to increase the throughput. It's kinda how I use the system as well on an SMP, but these additional components aren't wired all to well, so I opted not to publish those. Anyways, sounds you are on the path to a great system :)

@@Borbarad13 Thank you :) I'm on a new SP survival world, only just got a small gold farm and a big ol' trading hall set up. My old, big storage systems on pervious wolrds always just used simple item filters so they could only sort one item. If I wanted several I basicly had to run several hopper lines together. Things got big, convoluted and laggy very quickly. Your design is so much more elegant! :)

Depends a little bit on the config and the plugins used on the server. If the hoppers work normal (e.g. transfer one item at a time) and if there no specific anti-redstone plugins ("to reduce lag") then you should be good.

hey netyob, can you check in the back that all 3 configuration layer chests are configured correctly by checking their redstone torch status? The cart would not move if one chest is underconfigured. Next check would be whether the system is turned on in the maintenance hatch. If those things were checked and the cart is still not moving then we likely have a construction error. Are you able to validate your build with litematica?

Excellent work, it works wonderfully, but could you please consider making the Multi Item Sorter with one and 2 rows instead of 3 please. This is to have variety and to be able to choose how many rows we want to make on each side of the chest room, for items that can be obtained a lot or less. I have tried but have only been able to get one to work, but not very well.

I've got one question, i built the whole system, but when i start it minecart loses 2 items of Filter (to this set: 0, 17, 1, 1, 1). However the system works properly without this 2 items. Is this a problem? Thanks!

It needs to be 0,19,1,1,1 - otherwise the cart won't start if you sort only a 1 or 2 items. Can you re-add the filter items and see if they are still getting pulled out if your sort stuff? It might be that you had an incorrect starting state. Also, where did those 2 filter items ended up?

Now I see what the problem is: when the funnel is unloaded at the top and begins to go into a cliff, for some reason it leaves behind exactly 2 objects (in the unloading funnel in which everything else is unloaded).

If you use the carpet mod then it has a creativeNoClip function. Very useful when building :)

hey PensaCheSbatti, did you build it with litematica and if yes, can you confirm that everything is according to the schematic? If there is no build error, can you please re-check the configuration chests? Those would need to be set up right at the edge of signal strength 2 (like shown in the video). If one or more of chose chests have much signal strength (wrong configuration) then items would end up in overflow chest. Is the server a vanilla/fabric server or paper? You can also ping me on discord (it's easier there to share screenshots or maybe I could also hop onto the server real quick for a check - my discord name is the same as my user name here. Gl!

My hoppercart not moving (the trapdoor didnt open). How to fix this?? I keep checking your world map still cant find what the problem. Im still new in this kind of mechanism. This is happening when I using litematica. Currently im trying to make new one from scratch but still didnt know how the system work.

If you use litematica then you can validate the build to see what is missing. If everything is build correctly, then the following conditions must be met for the cart to run: 1) The system needs to be turned on 2) All configuration chests must be correctly set up (signal strength 2) 3) The cart has items to sort

The answer entirely depends on the configuration of the paper server. If redstone is configured to behave like in vanilla, then this system also works on paper. Otherwise, it's a gamble.

For Spigot & Paper it generally depends on the configuration of the server and the plugins used. So a clear "yes" or "no" can't be given here. If the config is in default, then would give it a try if I were you.

Probably not I'm afraid :/ I can't say for sure but, bedrock in general handles redstone very strangely so chances are that this won't function properly on bedrock.
