This is a great design. I'm curious though how lag friendly it is. I noticed in the world download a lack of composters over hoppers and no light sources in the apparatus itself to reduce block light updates, was this done intentionally so the inner workings were readily visible. I also swapped out the input chest for a trapped chest (personal preference) as it doesn't appear to have any negative impact on the overall design while also keeping items in the chest static incase you accidently put something in you want to keep in your inventory. I look forward to building this myself on my sever again great design.

I wasn't really thinking about lag given that at that scale I assumed people would go for a more complex design. Can't do much about the hoppers in this design but you are right, the redstone torches should have a light source near them. I like the idea about the trapped chest.

Wait, you probably don't mean the hoppers in the sorting slices. You probably mean the hoppers in the transport lines. Yes, those definitely should have composters.

I guess my question is, what’s the purpose of an encoded item sorter vs even just the most basic 1 wide tile able sorting system?
@elhedran
@elhedran Жыл бұрын
The most basic 1 wide item sorter is still encoded, it's just encoded to one item instead of five. So the answer to the very sensible question of why is if the item on its own would not fill a column of chests on its own but it would with four other similar blocks, a five encoded sorter becomes valuable. This happens a lot in my survival world, most often with common building blocks or non-farmed mob drops. Part of the reason I focused on getting it hopper speed though was so it can be used together with other sorting methods. If the sorter you use now is simpler and does what you need, stick with it... When what you use now answers the question is why multi encoded by where it comes short for you (if it ever does) this design can be added then.

No kidding: I was watching the v1 video and this published as I was considering a different design. This version is perfect for my needs, thanks! The only thing is there's no world / schematic download. Can you add one please?

@@elhedran One thing would pull this from amazing to perfect. Take a look at this build here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6bCapyqZqeGgLs It uses double chests for filter values which means that more than 6 items can go into the same slice. Can you try integrating that into the double-sided filter that is making the 1-tileable wall? My tree/honey/bonemeal/flower/sugarcane section thanks you lol. I really love your design for the dual function encoding and reserved slot/overflow and plan to maybe tinker with non-stackable to go to an allay section
@elhedran
@elhedran 2 жыл бұрын
I believe RaPsCaLLioN1138 already showed how to do the double sided filter here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4vLZ4GmnMSIf9k (metamilo mentions working with him on the design in the video you linked - so very likely the exact same design or similar enough). If I was looking at a chest/barrel encoded filter, I'd likely just use that design - it is close enough to hopper speed for pratical purposes and it does one wide chest slots. I was familiar with that design when I started my own approach - my design was mostly done to sacrifice the number of encoded slots in order to make the build simpler (and partially done to prove I could come up with my own encoded multi-item sorter design). Thanks for linking all the same though, it was on my todo list to go back to looking at that approach now that I've finished my own design just to see if there is a best-of-both-worlds I can maybe look at doing.

With the encoded sorter section is there anyway to add more variables to sort than just what could fit in the hoppers at 11:30 in the video? Thanks
@elhedran
@elhedran 2 жыл бұрын
Not with this design I'm afraid. If a hopper isn't used to hold the filter items, there is no way to have the test item just go from the filter to the sample and back without going the long way around, as is done in rapscallion's design. Which is to say it can be done, but it's a completely different build. The longer answer of why would need a video in of itself.

@@elhedran Okay thank you. So if I understand it right it is effectively limited to 5 items per chest.

Will this cause a lot of lag on a multiplayer server since there'd be so many observers going and many open-top hoppers?
@elhedran
@elhedran Жыл бұрын
I'm going to refer to ilmango's review of 1.19 lag (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKbclap6i6dkbck). Very breifly, observers are not generally a cause of lag when idle and still minimal when active. While there are open hoppers, they spend most of the time locked which is better for lag than having a compost on top. Without loading the carpet mod I can't say for sure, but I'd be very surprised if this was laggier than alternative sorting systems. In more detail... In terms of observers, I don't believe they are a common cause of lag in Minecraft Java, and in ilmango's video are indicated as being less a cause of lag than repeaters. They are also only active for a given sorting slice if that given slice is sorting items, so when idle would not really cause any lag. In terms of the hoppers, while open hoppers can be a cause of lag, its still less laggy than an a minecart hopper (five times less) or free moving items in water streams (even worse). But most critically, the open hoppers in this design spend most of their time locked, and locked hoppers are even less laggy than a hopper with a compost above it. Hence the open hoppers should not be a cause of very much lag at all when the system is idle and still be minimised when the system is not idle. The top layer, second layer, and forth layer all default to being locked and only unlocked based on needing to move an item, then locked again. I'd suspect the hoppers taking items from the sorter to the chest towers of causing more lag than the hoppers in the sorting system itself. Of course to really test things would require loading the system up in the carpet mod and doing some comparisons, but given what I understand of sources of lag and how the design behaves I don't believe it should be laggier than any other comparible sorting system.

Can we add a second encoder to a line to increase item encoded items to 10?
@elhedran
@elhedran Жыл бұрын
There already is a second line for the odd-vs-even chest filters. You could have the back and front lines share chests to get 10 filter items per chest, but then it wouldn't be 1 wide chest stacks anymore. You could do that with just some chests as well. Although nothing stopping having 3 or 4 filter lines either other than space and hoppers. I wonder what that would look like in practice...
@elhedran
@elhedran Жыл бұрын
On second thought, if you really want 10 items and single block tiling, I'd go with: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYuydp2KisiLh6M or something similar (hopper under chest/barrel encoded multi item sorter). Plenty of choices out there for multi item sorters with more encoding options.
