Before doing roundabouts of this type you must have sufficient car control skills, for example: - You should be able to change gears (up and down) without help or reminders - You should be able to stop and start smoothly without help or without having to think about what to do, it should be natural. - You should be happy with know where your car is positioned in the road - You should be good at reading road signs and general scanning ability. If you don't have these skills you are likely to struggle with this roundabout, as your focus needs to be on read the road signs and road markings and anticipating other road users and traffic lights, not on controlling you pedals or changing gears.

Going pease pottage to Crawley, if you stay in the far right lane approaching the round about then when on the round about stay in the right lane, you will come off in the correct lane and not need to switch lanes, also I'm pretty sure its not an overtaking lane. Apart from that good job
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 4 жыл бұрын
For that turn you will always need to switch lanes at some point, as you go past the Horsham exit you need to cross a broken white line to get in the far left lane, so that is a lane change. Perhaps draw a arial picture using google maps and post a link to here, as maybe I have misunderstood you.

@@UKDrivingTest im talking about when you exit the test center, turn left on the first roundabout, straight cross, then that one. What I was saying that when you go into the far right lane, and follow that lane onto the roundabout into the right lane on the roundabout it will take you off into the correct Crawley lane without having to go into the Horsham. Excellent. My personal bugbear is the Sainsbury spiral island at Redditch (no lights). There are 5 exits in total including one for the shop and the final exit at 360 degrees because the approach road is a dual carriageway. The approach is a two lane road. The left hand lane is for Sainsbury and a left turn towards Batchley. The right hand lane is for all other exits. The lanes are identified by signs and road markings. I want to go straight ahead for Birmingham (this lane on the island starts as a right hand lane then middle lane for Birmingham and then left hand lane for the final 2 exits at which point, a new right hand lane starts for those who missed their exit and for traffic entering from the left wanting the latter exits). I head correctly down the right hand lane. Too often, I get cut up because some drivers couldn't be bothered to wait in the longer queue in the right hand lane so head down the left hand lane. Because they're in the wrong lane for Birmingham and remaining exits, they cut me up on the middle of the island.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
It is true many drivers are always in a rush and can't wait, this then leads to various 'problems' on the roads. If drivers just took a bit more time when they drove the number of collisions and near misses would dramatically drop over night.

I’ve noticed all these videos showing how to navigate roundabouts show the road markings very clearly, but in my experience most road markings are worn away and cannot be read in time, especially the ones once on the roundabout to make sure you are in the correct lane to exit. Also there are hardly any other vehicles, try doing this on a strange roundabout with lanes full of vehicles and very faint road markings and other vehicles who know the roundabout and can go much faster. Some roundabouts have different lengths of dashes to designate lanes which helps a lot.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
Would not have an issue doing this on an unfamiliar roundabout with poor markings and busy traffic as: a.) be aware of your mirrors and surroundings, always ensuring you are clear to change position. Main thing is you are safe, so even if you can't see the markings and due to this you 'cut across' the lanes it is not an issue as long as you have made sure it is safe. b.) the busy traffic would help dictate where you need to position. c.) use common sense to work out where you need to position, e.g. if turning right 4th exit and it is 2 lanes you will probably approach in the right hand lane and move over to the left after passing the 3rd exit. If it is 3 lanes you will still probably approach in the right hand lane but due to potentially two lane changes needed you will need to start moving to the middle lane somewhere after the 2nd exit, then move to the left hand lane somewhere after the 3rd exit. d.) be confident to go around the roundabout if needed, so just keep the right hand lane go round once to 'assess it', then on the second loop put you plan into action. e.) be confident to take the wrong exit, don't panic and change lanes at the last moment. Sometimes going the scenic route can be more fun, providing you plan your journey so you are not giving yourself ample time to make mistakes and then getting stressed because you are running late.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
Of course for the purpose of making an instructional video, such as this, you really need a roundabout with clear road markings and signs. However even with clear signs and markings many so called 'experienced' drivers will fail to take the effort to look at the signs and markings and just make wrong assumptions on what to do, typically because they are in the rush due to poor route planning.
@boblawrence5011
@boblawrence5011 2 жыл бұрын
All replies are very complimentary to the video, which is ok and understood. But there will be times when quite a few drivers will be in this situation and will be beeped for being in the wrong place. All I ask is people accept it is far more difficult when lane markings are not clearly defined and there is heavy traffic and not anywhere near as easy as it would be if there is very little traffic and lanes clearly defined, and accept there are other sides to a situation. I watch these videos because I want to improve my driving, not to be critical of them, but there are times when things are not straight forward. I am a subscriber to this channel as I am to a few others and have learnt a lot from them, but I still maintain there will be times when a lot of drivers will be in the situation which I am commenting on, not to be critical.

Thanks for this video, very helpful! When coming from Horsham and going towards Pease Pottage services, how should I use my indicators when driving onto the roundabout? Obviously I would normally indicate right when turning right at a roundabout, but as I would need to go straight into the middle lane, this might confuse other drivers as they might think I'm going to change lane. Should I indicate right whilst waiting to merge onto the roundabout and then turn it off once I'm on it? Or should I not indicate at all here?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
I generally don't indicate at all on these 'spiral' type roundabouts, as like you say the right signal is confusing when you 'change lanes' as you go round. Of course exit signals will not cause any confusion, so consider doing them if it will benefit someone, but as the roundabout is traffic light controlled the benefit is minimal, so not a major issue if you don't signal to exit.

At 5.58 - when exiting towards Crawley A23, are you supposed to signal left at this point as you're exiting or is this not required? I'm confused whether you need to signal or not at traffic light controlled roundabouts. What if you were in the right hand lane here (it wasn't safe to move to the left lane), would you signal left to exit also even though you are exiting in the right hand lane? Would this cause a car beside you on your left to slow down and therefore fail your test?

I'm far more concerned about the non-spiralling ones. Having to watch out for traffic as you (and they) switch lanes seems like unneccessary bother and a safety risk. Hate those things. Of course it's quite common for people to change lanes on the spiralling ones too but at least not everyone's doing it.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
Less lane changes on the spiral roundabouts is why they use them in busy areas, as less lane changes means less hazards and more flow to the roundabout.
@UKDrivingTest

So basically you seem to have a very good understand of why they sometimes use spiral roundabouts. I know some people like to think they do it just to make things more complicated, but they are safer and more efficient.

@@UKDrivingTest Sadly I failed due to a roundabout. I watched some of the videos and practiced driving down there a bit. I knew it was going to be tricky. I managed to do most of the roundabouts decently. However, one of them where I was taking third exit I was going a bit slow to look out for my exit but a car caught up by my side blocking my exit. I didn't observe the best that time and cut them up, they honked me and I knew I'd failed at that point. There's just so much to look out for on the roundabouts and it's so easy to make the wrong decision. Hopefully by next time I'll be perfect at roundabouts.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
Ok that i quite a common fault to happen, the important thing to remember it is unlikely that you speed was too slow, more the other vehicle was driving too fast and trying to overtake on your left, which they should not do. What drivers will often do is assume you will stay in the right lane when exiting the bigger roundabouts and try to overtake on your left. You need to be very vigilant of this, so if you are taking the 3rd exit start to ease off the gas as you approach the 2nd exit, start checking your mirrors EARLY, you need to check them AT LEAST twice before exiting. If you only check your mirrors when you reach the 3rd exit chances are you will only have time to do one quick, ineffective, look and you will miss things, which sounds like this is what happened. So please do not go around the roundabouts faster, this will only make it more dangerous and harder to make effective observations / mirror checks before exiting. Instead check mirrors earlier and ease off the gas to give time to check effectively.

@@UKDrivingTest Alright, thanks yeah that's basically what happened. My driving instructor said I was ready a few weeks ago but I never did any proper mock test, so I think having the experience of a test is what I needed so I know exactly what to expect next time. I did know that observations were very important and I was trying to focus on it and exagerrate it. I felt a lot of pressure as I really wanted to pass so I guess that also made it a bit tougher.

If you are approaching a roundabout to go third exit with 4 lanes with left lane having left arrow, second lane having left and straight arrow, both 3rd lane and 4th having straight arrow is the 2nd lane that has left and straight arrow only for 1st and 2nd exit thud to go third exit you have to use either the 3rd or 4th lane? Also, there's roundabouts with 4 lanes with left lane having left arrow while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lane have the straight arrow but 3rd lane is being used as a third exit. Even though 2nd lane has same arrow as 3rd and 4th is the 2nd lane only for 2nd exit?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest Жыл бұрын
It depends on the roundabout, there is no set rule. But on a 4 lane roundabout it is likely there will not only be arrows, but also signs / markings showing which lanes goes to which destination, like on this video. You need to know your destination, i.e. London, and look for that on the signs / markings, knowing your exit number is not too important if you can follow the signs.

I have a different question, I am looking to buy car and while requesting a test drive the dealer said minimum 12 months as license holder is needed as per the insurance company. I couldn't find this as a rule anywhere. Not sure if you can suggest here anything?

True there is not specific rule saying you need a licence for at least 12 months before you can test drive or rent a car. But it is a pretty standard clause of most companies insurance policies in order to reduce the risk of collisions on their cars.

@Driving Crawley I have a question negotiating roundabout when cyclists are on your left. Are there different rules which apply for them? On one occasion the cyclist from left didn't stop and I had to stop to give them way, but it was a bit tricky as I had fast traffic behind me on this very large and fast moving roundabout. Can you clarify please.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
It is difficult to say without seeing the situation. But you need to be aware of vulnerable road users, such as cyclists, it is also worth noting that cyclists may not follow the rules, but that is the same for ALL road users, not everyone is going to follow the rule, that is what causes the collisions on the road.

Can you advise me about the mill hill roundabout? If I am approaching the roundabout from Watford to Tottenham 3rd exit, which lane would be more appropriate as it's a busy roundabout and I want to end up in the left lane as per my instructor. please do reply as I have my test on 25th aug

Can you find the roundabout on Google maps and then send me the link, saying what road number /name you are approaching from and which exit you are taking (as Watford to Tottenham does not mean much to me)

Hi, this is a great video. Thank you. I have a question, are there standard rules for the position of road name markings on roundabouts. I always thought the road names shown correspond to which exit the lane goes to. E.g if a lane has markings on it A23, M23, Servs from top to bottom then on that lane the first exit it reaches is A23, 2nd exit M23 etc. However I see that on some roundabouts and lanes but then others seem to be totally mixed up. Been trying to find if there is a standard rule but cant find any help.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
There does not appear to be any 'rule' for that, for example if the middle lane goes for the 3rd exit and 4th exit something it will put the name of the 3rd exit on top of the sign, then sometimes put the 4th exit on top. I have never really found a problem with this, as all you need to do is get be in the lane the signs tell you to be in.

at 3:35 where it's the middle lane to go ahead, you'd only know that from looking at the road markings, right? (if you didn't already somehow know). What about if there's lots of cars or traffic there and you basically can't see the road marking until it's too late? I'd be in the left lane to go straight ahead. I guess on a test, i'd just go left anyway at that point!? Also, where exactly is this round about in relation to coming out of the test center? Do you have any actual test vids of students at this roundabout?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the road markings are all that tell you, but it is still perfectly manageable in traffic for the following reasons: The left lane is a new lane on approach to the roundabout, this should give a clue it might be a left only If you are keeping a good distance from the traffic ahead and looking far ahead enough the road markings will be perfectly clear, even in heavy traffic.

@@UKDrivingTest thanks. That makes sense about it being a 'new' lane. I failed many tests about 12 years ago and i'm now CONSIDERING giving it one last shot again! (initially decided 'never agian'!) Would of course mean passing my theory test first and then see if I can pass the practical in under 20 tests at which time it really would be time to forget about it!! haha. Not made of money. Really appreciate your vids though as i'm from Crawley. Look forward to more real test vids from you.

If we use both feet on the pedals in automatic car will that be a fail in adi part 2?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest Жыл бұрын
Rather than thinking about test, which only stresses people out and causes overthinking is to consider WHY you would need to use both feet on the pedals. Let me explain... - It only takes 0.5 seconds to move you foot from the gas to the brake, so if you are having to left foot brake I would question you anticipation and forward planning, i.e. seeing things too late and too fast to have time to move you foot from gas to brake. - During a slow speed manoeuvres sometimes it is hard to keep the car very slow by only using the gas, especially if the car has a big engine, so doing a small amount of right foot braking might be needed, but not likely to be frequent as if you have excellent pedal control it should be manageable with just the right foot and gentle pressure on the gas.

3:13, you can change lane when exiting a roundabout like that? Wow I get confused a lot in this kinda situation when i end up in the fast lane, drive on the fast lane and then get back to the left side when i can. i was told by my instructor not to cross lanes at roundabouts...
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
On many roundabouts there is only one lane to exit, so you need to change lanes to exit Changing lanes, more accurately mirrors change direction, is the 2nd biggest reason for people failing their test and often called 'cutting people up' post test, which happens quite a bit. So I can kinda see what your instructor is saying, but it is perfectly acceptable, providing you are observant.

@@UKDrivingTest Cheers. I do get quite nervous when I realise I will get off on the fast lane, while thinking changing it to the left would mean creating problems for the driver already on the left...
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
@@doubleeggnoglatte829 remember it is not the fast lane, there is no such thing in the Highway Code, it is the overtaking lane, I know I am being picky but calling it "fast lane" can add to that anxiety. If it is not safe to exit in the left lane or you are unsure / have not checked effectively then 100% exit in the overtaking lane, as soon as you exit put your left signal on and return to the left lane when safe, as your left signal is on the drivers behind are more likely to understand why you are in that overtaking lane and should give you time to return to the left lane.

6:00 You mention the speed limit changed to national "which is 70mph". This is not true, as national speed limit is 60mph. It's only 70 on motorways. Love your videos, just being nitpicky, but I don't want learners to get misinformed.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 4 жыл бұрын
National speed limit is 70mph for a car on a motorway true, but it is also 70mph for a car on a dual carriageway, the road shown on the video is a dual carriageway. Please see link below: www.gov.uk/speed-limits It is quite common for people to have this misconception, as well as thinking a motorway is a road with 3 lanes or more, and a dual carriageway is a road with 2 lanes, both statements are incorrect.
@cabincontrol
@cabincontrol 4 жыл бұрын
@@UKDrivingTest thank you for clearing this up. I can see now why I thought you were wrong. That road is leading onto a dual carriageway. If the national speed signs were on a normal road, it would be 60. Appreciate you correcting me. I've learnt something new.
