Nice addition to your already impressive collection of projects in wood. This one and your wooden tank treads are my favorites.

Great job. Love that you stayed with mostly wood. I work with wood & metal, some stone,but I like to see people work with what they have. Use what you have & you will not need what you do not have. You are young, off to a good start, you will go far.

How is this worse for the bearings than regular use of a router? All routing involves side-load on the bearings.

Yes, slot mortisers unfortunately are not consume type equipment, so they are quite expensive. Hollow chisel mortisers are available for consumers, but even a professional hollow chisel mortiser isn't going to do very accurate work.

My initial design used rods and bushings, but it was too bulky, so never built that version.

Five stars and a fave. You've created an exceptional machine. The only slight criticism is the operator has to use math to factor the bit diameter. Since they come in exact sizes it shouldn't be hard. Well done!

Yes, you can make a small fortune selling them, if you are willing to spend a large fortune getting them manufactured.

Possibly because of the leverage afforded by the joystick Matthias, though as with all routing one must be mindful to use several small passes coupled with top quality cutters.
@cmsmith195512 жыл бұрын
You are so right. There would not be any difference in bearing load with the horizontal load application. But I would go with Stainless steel Rods and bushings over converted dwarer slides. They will take more abuse and last longer. I think the addisional cost would be worth it. Other that that this unit is a great design.

Flex has not been a problem at all. The forces aren't that great. The downside of shafts and bushings is that they take up much more room and don't slide as easily.
@7pulford14 жыл бұрын
@Matthiaswandel I'm sorry, what did you say at the end? within a few... I'm guessing its a fraction of an inch, but we only use metric in the UK. Also, its a great machine, but do you ever use it, now that you have the pantorouter? or is it somewhat obsolete?

Great designs! Question instead of counting the turns at the top why not just put a measuring tape to measure vertically that can tell you how high in inches that it goes up or down?
@TheMockingbirddude14 жыл бұрын
Even though you adjusted the slides to reduce play, wouldn't they still flex enough to throw off the accuracy? What are the downsides of using a design like your tenon jig for this application? would the bushings bind when under pressure? I'd hate to build something like this only to have if flex and be a waste of time.

Arquimedes, centuries ago said: give me a lever and I can move the Globe. \Years ago I took a stand wich match with my Bosch router in a vertical position. then I took a cross-vise with a movable jaw (where I clamp the work) and 2 screws with handles, like the Hugh Lyman's version.It works, but you must work slow and you must use 2 hands. Your idea is simple but genial because you can work with one hand and quickly

First, I would like to thank you by posting the videos. They are very useful and I have learned a lot with it. But I have some questions for you: are you using a HSS mill in the router? This kind of mill does not overheat on hard wood? I will try to use some ancient railway sleepers to make some furniture and they are in very hardwood, so that is why I am asking you about it. Thanks

Hey Matthias, I love both your slot mortiser and pantorouter. I'm interested in purchasing one of the plans and building one of them, but "REALISTICALLY" on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being beginner level, how difficult would it be to build one of these machines. I've seen many of the machines you've built, so please keep in mind that only a few folks have the skilset to duplicate some of the items you create. I have all of the equipment that would be needed and I do have what I would guess is just above average woodworking skills. With that said, what's my chances of completing one of these machines before getting frustrated and scrapping the build mid-way. PS For anyone else that has made one of these, please feel free to chime in as well. Thanks.

Matthias, I like the versatility of the Multi-Slot Mortising Machine. I especially like the capability of the machine as a horizontal router machine.
