In this audio clip as I ask Caroline Burraway to tell us how you start developing this type of practice for your art. Here’s some of Caroline’s Burraway response:
“I’ve always had a deep fascination with individuals who find themselves on the fringes of society, often through no fault of their own but due to circumstances beyond their control. I tend to embark on long-term projects that I initiate myself. One of these projects involved delving into the profound topic of mortality, and I dedicated four years of my life to developing an app that tackled this subject."
CAROLINE BURRAWAY
Multidisciplinary artist Caroline Burraway’s body of work confronts socio-political conflicts and cultural ruptures between and within communities, engaging the viewer in converation around these issues. Concerned with underlying social structures and the everyday lived experience of the displaced and disenfranchised, she explores the interplay between the banality of the everyday and the political conditions of their precarious existence. Burraway has been responding to the refugee crisis since 2015, gathering research material from camps across Europe to produce mixed-media installations, large-scale drawings, sculptures, soundscapes and videos to provoke a humanistic response to the twin issues of displacement and dispossession in our compassion-fatigued world.
A British contemporary artist, Burraway studied BA (Hons) Drawing at Camberwell College of Arts and MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. Burraway has taken part in numerous group and solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in the UK and internationally and has been nominated for several awards. As First Prize Winner of the prestigious TBW Drawing Prize (formerly Jerwood), Burraway’s body of work confronts the banal everyday lived experience of the marginal individual and their relationship with the world they inhabit with a complex social message, engaging the viewer in conversation around these socio-political issues.
Burraway has been responding to the refugee crisis since 2015, filming and collecting research materials in refugee camps across Europe which she uses for installations, sculpture, video and sound scapes, and largescale drawings. This project, supported by UNHCR, aims to provoke a humanitarian response to the twin issues of displacement and dispossession, while questioning the differential values placed on a Western life and the life of a refugee arriving at the borders of the Western world.
