Multilateral responses to climate related security risks | BCSC 2023

This session was recorded during the 2023 edition of the Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC). During the panel, speakers discussed the climate crisis as one of the most serious risks to global peace and stability in the 21st century. As the understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with interacting climate and conflict risks has grown in recent years, multilateral organisations have become an integral part of the response to these risks by driving joint approaches across sectors, nations and communities. In this session, panelists addressed the following questions:
1. How can multilateral solutions drive concrete actions and ensure context-specificity and relevance across different governance, political, economic and social systems?
2. How can multilateral responses facilitate transboundary cooperation and work with local partners to implement activities?
3. How can multilateral organisations provide a platform for political dialogue? How can this kind of dialogue be channelled into an agenda for action?
4. How can more alliances be built across sectors and at different levels of governance to better address climate related security risks?
Panellists shared insights and lessons learnt from their work, highlight key policy milestones and developments from their organisations and outline ongoing challenges, gaps and priorities moving forward.
