On a thru-hole board where the traces are connected at vias or through-holes, I'd just run a jumper wire. The most common inner-layer break is rework damage at a through-hole where someone replaced a part.
@Razor204811 жыл бұрын
I wonder if this can still be done with modern PCB's and if it is worth doing to test equipment where there is a chance that you will encounter a 7 layer PCB. (non working test equipment is cheap if you can repair it but it is always a gamble since you may end up with a unit that has a bad PCB trace. (I have been unable to find tools that are designed for modern PCB's which use very small traces)
@zivilian6 жыл бұрын
modern 2018 board repair tech here: we still replace traces but now its more or less just being able to get access to them in general. If you have access to two ends, normal procedure is to just take jumper wire which we currently have down to 10 microns. All work is done in much nicer microscopes. But I am still using pace products and they are still relevant in the industry for sure.

@TheNefastor Жыл бұрын
@@ChadDoebelin I really don't think so. This type of repair is impossible on anything made this century. As for warships, they carry spares. I don't think any warship has an electronics lab with the tools and personnel to do this sort of thing. I asked because it seems to be something that was only possible back before BGA packages, buried vias, micro vias and track widths of 100 microns. Any tech that old is no longer in use, it's in a museum.

@Jean Roch There are a fair number of 80s and 90s computers still used by people for nostalgic fun. I am quite literally watching this video because I'm trying to decide if to try to repair some corroded blind vias, or bypass them completely. It's quite fun to never give up on a dead logic board. Unless a custom chip is blown, most things from up to the end of the 90s are fixable with enough determination.

Excellent instruction. However - the time to repair, specialized repair equipment, and knowledge, make repair of most boards now that they are multi-layered, impractical. Next generation multilayer boards ought to be snap together layers for easy separation - for diagnosis and repair.

sounds like that would still require specialized equipment to separate layers and realigning without error as well, otherwise it sounds like you'd be working backwards from the intended purpose of multi layer circuit boards and that is saving space and smaller board designs

What about UV solder mask
@therealjammit3 жыл бұрын
UV solder mask is new. It's just epoxy that cures with UV instead of a chemical called a catalyst. Two part epoxy doesn't start to cure until you mix the two. One chemical is the actual stuff that gets hard and the other is the catalyst.

I watched this video, pondering the question, can *ANY* multilayer board be repaired? To my surprise, the answer is yes, but the specialized supplies, tools, and skills required are only available to professional service technicians. My greatest fear in working on these kinds of boards is, what if I remove a faulty through-hole component, and that happens to damage or destroy a plated through via? I would very likely be forced to replace the entire board.
@jrmcferren5 жыл бұрын
The key is to prevent the damage in the first place. A proper solder extractor and technique will prevent this type of damage. Pace has some videos on this this channel showing how to use their tool, but even the generic tools use the same technique.
