Well, in my opinion it’s good to even say a few sentences than nothing at all, to learn any language, you gotta practice and practice. So to me it really doesn’t matter if he speaks fluently or that his accent is different. Just for his effort to learn other languages is already a huge accomplishment, and that is already great!

There was a flaw in the translation from the brazilian dudes tho - he didn't say "yeah, I love football!", he said that football isn't really his thing since he's a DJ, so he prefers music 😂😂😂😂 I'm really amazed tho, you're very talented!! Matrixyst what joke?? I just watched it again and in my opinion, if it's not a translation flaw then it's plain profiling and generalizing a whole population into one stereotype. I prefer to think it was a flaw in the translation.

Major Fallacy I don't necessarily like thinking of generalization of stereotypes as a joke. I know that it's not that huge of a deal if someone does or does not like football, but it can be misleading. Anyways, if you find it funny and see it as a joke then good for you, it's nice to laugh. I just prefer not to see people purposely putting all brazilians in the "we're all crazy about football" box, but that's just my opinion 🤷🏻 Edit: spelling

Major Fallacy the guy also said he went to Amsterdam last year, and in the translation it was embassy ? Was that a joke or is he lost in the translation? Also his Portuguese is pretty bad, he has a short vocabulary, bad intonation ( sounds Spanish ) and he also used the verb mirar ( that’s spanish) instead of ver/assistir.

This (along with other comments) answers my question. I suspected he only had basic knowledge of each language. He seems to have a knack for pronunciation, and that makes it look like he speaks fluently. This reminds me of the time I was with some friends, one of them half-Japanese. At some point I said one very simple sentence in Japanese ("kore wa nan desu ka" == "what's this?"), and he went completely bananas, eyes wide open, shouting "you speak Japanese and you've never told me!!", only because I got the accent right and I sounded convincing. BTW, I still can't understand basic directions in Japanese.

To be fair, his language skills varies language to language - he's clearly very confident in Tagalog and Portuguese which are featured here, but his Mandarin and Cantonese skills are limited. And I struggled to understand his Mandarin as his tones are waaaay off (Chinese languages are tonal, which is often a challenge for white people who are not used to this aspect of the language) and he needs a wider range of vocabulary - like he uses 'hao li hai' for everything which is like, oh come on, there's more than one way to express the concept of "that's great/good" or "alright" and hao li hai can mean like 'that's awesome' or even 'you're awesome' but he uses it to describe himself sometimes and I would find that inappropriate if a native speaker did that (self-praise is a no-no) but I can forgive him as a foreign speaker who is not using the most appropriate term. However, as a fellow polyglot, yeah, it's impossible to be fluent in every language you speak - you'll be fluent in some of them and get by in others, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be afraid to use those foreign languages that you're not fluent in. However, for the purpose of KZbin, perhaps it was a mistake to try to do stuff in Mandarin which is struggles in (and he admits that in the video) - the Tagalog and Portuguese were impressive though. Mandarin is a bloody difficult language to master as a European and he's trying his best.
@TeddeeJordan
@TeddeeJordan 5 жыл бұрын
How many languages can you? I think he's got better than that in quite a few and still beginning to learn others. One of the big issues with language acquisition is people feel insecure about speaking it until they get "good enough," and they can't get "good enough" without actual conversational practice. He'll get much better much faster by going out and speaking to people, even if he has to initially keep conversations very simple and makes many mistakes. English is my first language, but I speak a little German and Spanish, and I'm currently learning Cherokee. Outside of Spanish, there's literally no one I can speak with in person where I live, but I make a point to try to use German and Cherokee in online conversations regularly. I'm sure in a few years I will look back on stuff I've said now and find tons of errors, especially with the Cherokee polysynthesis, but all that will mean is I'm improving, and the year after that it will be the same.
@Yeldur
@Yeldur 5 жыл бұрын
@@gymnastalexliang I agree completely, I'm learning Mandarin at the moment (Not that far in yet) but the grammar appears to be really simple yet the tonal side of things is very tough. If you want to see another channel check out this guy, he speaks Mandarin and Cantonese very very well (Check him out here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGTLc2iQqc2VhpI) - He's one of the reasons I started learning Mandarin, I love the reactions he gets when people realise that he speaks it fluently. Super super impressive.
@Yeldur

@@BennyDACHO That's the problem with being an polyglot. Too many languages. It would take a lifetime to master each and every language unless you're incredibly skilled at it (like incredibly incredibly, miles beyond what even the 1% are good at) - My question is; is it better to master a few languages and have better conversation with those you do talk to, or is it better to know a lot about a lot of languages and connect with a lot more people but be less proficient in speaking? (Not a rhetorical question at all, I think either answer is good)
@Yeldur
@Yeldur 5 жыл бұрын
@@BennyDACHO The definition of a polyglot is "knowing or using several languages" - It doesn't imply that they are proficient in their use. I personally would rather know a few fluently than a load with imperfection, but it's subjective, everyone has a different preference.
