Thanks for the interesting vid @MultilingualFamily @Andrea Breitenmoser and congratulations on your own mastery of English. I'd love to know your opinion for the best strategy for us to raise trilingual twins. Our girls are 8 months old. We live in England and both parents' first language is English. I am bilingual in Spanish (about 97% perfect, OPOL from birth), mother is fluent in Italian (Italian parents) but lacked exposure post age 5, so about 90% perfect in Italian. I've been speaking (and now reading) to them exclusively in Spanish (except in presence of guests), mother worries about "confusing" them and has been using only English. I would like to encourage her to switch to Italian before it's too late. Childcare professionals will all use English so they will never be short of exposure there. Thank you

Definitely focus on the minority languages. I would suggest to focus at first on one of them ES or IT and develop a strong bond to the kids I that language and then the other one will come easely because EN and IT are quite similar. Subscribe to my newsletter to get regular support!

May I ask: in what language do your children speak to each other? I'm pregnant with my second child and I'm unsure how "strict" to be that they speak with each other in the minority language. Or just leaving it alone and focusing on how they speak with me?

Unfortunately there is little you can do to influence what language they will speak with each other. They will choose and even if you intervene, they will still choose what they want as soon as you look away. My children speak mostly in Danish with each other, which is funny because it's probably their weakest language. I think they do that because the father and grandparents and cousin play a lot with them, so they associate open play with that language. My brother and I chose to speak the majority language together. So it depends.

Hello I was wondering how early I could read in English to my son who is 4 months old. I'm French and already read to him in french everyday. My husband who's German reads in german but we speak only English together since we met. Should I wait until french and german are well established or can I also read in english? I don't want to confuse my baby and I want french and german to be dominant not english

Good question. It depends a bit on where you live. If you live in a country where the majority language is not French nor German, I would definitelly stick to those languages for another 1-2 years. But if you feel like reading sometimes in EN, that won't hurt. Consider joining my newsletter. I give tips and free content for multilingual families just like your. www.multilingual.family

@@alexandramotsetdelices6138 Concentrate all your time and effort in building up a solid base in French. English can come later. That's what I would do. You can still expose you baby to EN songs and stories, reading won't hurt but the time yould be best invested in you strongest language: French. :0)
