In Australia we 100% race steam engines in the Hunter valley on the 4 track area. Sometimes it's 2 locos . Sometimes it's 4 locos. They do it once a year.

At about 37-38 minutes in, I heard you asking for double tracks and passing sidings, they do have a road map, that the public can see, and unless they have changed it since I last looked at it, there are plans for it, alongside some other nice features, like making certain bits straighter for higher speed. *Cough* please be that damn 30 section that derails passenger cars *Cough* It looks like the devs at altfuture have their hands full with plans, and I cant wait to see what those plans look like

If I remember correctly, the diesel mechanical actually now has a shifting diagram in the cab. I don’t remember exactly where it is, but it’s either on the edge of the control deck under the shifters or on the wall next to them. Its a little hard to see, I only noticed it my most recent time playing lol

i had simeler issues when learning to drive. "mum let go of the clutch and put your foot on the accelator" me: lets go of the clutch and instently stalls the car. took me a minuet to realise to let go of the clutch SLOWLY.

21:05 - we do have what we can an Equalizing Reservoir, which is the reference you refer to. Most games don't seem to model it. 33:00 - At high speeds, you could have this happen - so there is a sort of "soft limit" to speed all the way forward but it very much does not dictate the exact scenario like most games end up simulating.

I love the quote unquote race trains in Australia comment. I was a junior volunteer on one of the races many years ago when the more famous 3801 got stuck waiting for a freight train whilst turning around and we had to leave on the sister train 3830 due to scheduling. Halfway through "the race" 3801 finally caught up and flew past us but it took no time for us to catch back up and then we slowed down again so 3801 could win, it definitely broke the illusion of it being a race. Last years race was between a purpose built passenger engine and and heavy freight engine and it was still close lol. The year we had 4 engines in the race was pretty magical especially since one of the train had newly been converted from broad gauge to standard gauge and because i remember when i was a kid 20ish years ago i remember the heavy freight loco i mentioned was only just starting to get restored.

You know what? I approve of Generic Cute Anime Girl as the default avatar. We need more diverse representation in our train games, so why not throw a bone to the weebs and otaku out there? Besides, Derail Valley has always been on that line of "Realistic but not really based on any specific thing in particular", so this kinda suits the vibe well. Hell, something very similar to the DH4 appears in Makoto Shinkai's "Children Who Chase Lost Voices". If nothing else, it's fun. And we need more fun in our world in general and our train games in particular.

Make a movie "of mice and trains" about 2 locomotives. One that keeps getting switched to a bunch of railways because it's a good train but it just doesn't have enough power for what they need and a second much larger locomotive that has power for days but the operation of it is so simple that it makes it complex and just doesn't fit into any rail yard. Eventually, the larger locomotive kills it's crew and ends up running away and the first locomotive is the one that is used to catch up to it so the savior team can blow the boiler on the runaway to stop it.😂
