This video shows how you can perform multiple air layering on a single stem of a fig tree without using any substrate or Nylon. I made 25 air layers on a single stem of a fig tree and I got 25 new Air layered fig seedlings. Air layering done with substrates have some issues that prevents root formation on the air layered stem, the most common issue is lack of root formation due to too much water in the substrate. Too much water in the substrate either when mixing the substrate or rain water entering the wrapped substrate prevents root formation during air layering. Performing air layering without using a substrate means that the chances of root formation failure is very very low. With this method, I only used foil paper to wrap the stem, no hormones, no substrate and no nylon wrap used.

Hi , thanks for you videos, very instructive . Can we air layering from a tree that has never given fruit?
@africangardening9243
@africangardening9243 5 ай бұрын
Thank you too for watching. Yes you can , however the new plant will not start producing fruits early since the mother plant has never produced fruits. Air Layering should be done on trees are already producing fruits so that the new plants from the tree will start producing fruits quite early.

Hello and thank you. Does the size of the bridge depend on the size of the future cutting?
@africangardening9243
@africangardening9243 5 ай бұрын
@@MatyaKatya yes if you want more cuttings, the width of the bridge must be as small as possible (make sure you can still remove the cambium layer). Mine was about 1 cm because I wanted to have more cuttings and also I needed each cutting section to have a bud.

What about when it rains? Won’t water go down the stem?
@africangardening9243
@africangardening9243 5 ай бұрын
@@Justin-zz2yo yes water will go down the stem, I did this when there was no rain for some weeks. If you want to do this method without a substrate for figs during the rainy session you should use a nylon wrap. Water going down will slow down the process of root formation. You can watch my other video where I used a nylon wrap without substrate.

@africangardening9243 no sir the vine I have does it on its own around june -July , when temps get up 80° F to 90° F degrees, it usually takes a week of heavy rains before they send tap roots out , if it stays wet an humid they'll grow untill they hit the ground unless it gets dry and hot then they brown off as you described. I tied a bag of soil around two sections to see what happened , the roots filled the bad in two weeks, I will try this method you have shown, give me a few weeks I'll report back!
