Bagua specializes in dealing with multiple attackers. In this lesson, Sigung Richard Clear covers the fundamental strategy and principles necessary for surviving an attack by multiple assailants.
If you are going to survive a situation where several people are attacking you, there are some smart strategies, and there are things you simply cannot afford to do. One thing you can never do is get locked up or engaged with any one of the attackers. That means you can't grapple or wrestle, and you can't let them grab onto you. It also means you can't go toe-to-toe with anyone.
The first thing you have to do is get moving. The next thing is keep moving. This sounds easy to do, but in practice it will require some training. In the video, Sigung Clear demonstrates how pausing for even a split second could be enough for the multiple assailants to get to you. If that happens, the rest of the fight is unlikely to go in your favor.
Understanding and training these skills is critical because everything we do in future lessons will build on top of this.

Again, I'm most impressed. This is the first time I've seen the real essence of Bagua in action on the internet. So easy, but so complex. The teacher sounds American - it's a great shame that we will never meet. I'd really like to speak to his teacher.

I like the way you simplify the explanations in plain english - a lot of people want to sound all mystical and knowledgeable but can not break it down in simple terms

I am very grateful for your videos. There is no Bagua teacher near me, and I really wanted to learn it. Your videos made it possible for me to practice by myself. I love how you emphasize the basic principles, which I think are what make the art effective in a real fight. In my opinion, these first few videos are what many Bagua practitioners should focus on. You did a great job in constantly reminding us to return to and review these first few lessons. I also appreciate how you demystified Circle Walking, emphasizing functionality above all. More power to you!

What an AMAZING style. Thanks for demonstrating! I love this video: It's so hard to learn about a style by just seeing form training. This demo makes the principles of Bagua clear and understandable. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, very informational. Since day one, my teacher emphasized the same thing. "Get out of the way" and "Move more". When I don't listen, I always get hit. A lesson that teaches itself.

Excellent stuff - so easy, right? A couple of decades and you'll have it. BaGua is very simple but it takes years of practice with a good teacher to make it so.

I'm really enjoying your intro lessons. There are no Baguazhang practitioners in my area, and it's hard to learn this from a book, online discussions, or even just watching video demonstrations that don't include the instructional component. I have many years of karate training, and I'm loving both the internal nature and self defense applications of Baguazhang. Thank you!

Great video thank you! What if you're completely surrounded before the fight begins and there's nowhere to step? I assume you'd have to immediately displace at least one opponent to make space..
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 10 жыл бұрын
There's a lesson coming up in a few months on spinning that addresses this. Basically you have to use the spinning twisting movement to shed the opponents attacks while you move to create space. Of course, if you can do something devastating to the opponents you do that as well but you have to make sure you're moving slipping and neutralizing their attacks first or you won't survive long enough to do anything else.

Hi awesome video, I'm training Yin style for 2 years from private lessons. Most my training has been pivots weight shift and weapons, my teacher has been very busy so KZbin is it for now. My mud walk has been with dragging feet no hip, is there a big difference in your opinion on this? I love this art and no school in NYC.

My request is off the topic but i found out you are also a systema practitioner, It would be great if a teacher with the amount of knowledge you have in internal systems, could comment about systema and its similarities with the chinese internal martials arts.Thanx

Great video showing how bagua can be used against multiple attackers using grappling and striking. Especally cause I don't normally see it used in such a way. But I do feel there is complications with striking. Do you really only get to throw off some quick strikes on the move. It was shown fairly well but I still need convincing because I worry the strikes wouldn't take an oponent out. And yes this conflics with my training method. Also I tend to train in throwing oponents into each other as human sheilds. Was this not done due to style reasons or risk of it becoming a grappling match? Hope you can help, thank you.

Thank you glad you enjoyed the video. Power should be present in every part of the movement so that any contact with the attacker is damaging to them unless you choose otherwise. This starts with the basics body mechanics. Here's a clip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHfEk5Who6tle6-Nes, we also use the opponents as weapons. That's covered in more depth in the Bagua Basics. We find it's best for beginners on evasion in the very beginning. If their evasionary skills are good, throws and counters will be easy. If the evasionary skills are lacking they'll never get the opportunity to use the attackers against each other.

After additional study, I've concluded that there really are only two changes in Ba Gua - guess which ones they are! The two give rise to whatever variations arise from them. 64 changes? 128 changes? You practice two, you practice them all!

The last time I was attacked was in a parking lot in the Summer of 2016 (if memory serves). It turned out to be one attacker, but for a time there was another person there, so I had to treat it like a multiple attacker scenario until it was proven otherwise. The attacker first tried to run me down with his truck and attempted to get "line of sight," which made it seem likely that he had a gun. He only got out of the truck after his "backup" had arrived, and so I had to treat it as a multiple attacker situation. However, once the real attacker made it clear what his intentions were, the other person wanted no part of it, and I was able to address the perpetrator directly.

Hi there. After watching this i have inquired about Bagua Zhang in my city. I train Tai Chi, and i know the classes on their web page would not really be suitable for my work. Would private tuition (say bi monthly, to learn walking the circle), and regular practice be enough to start the learning process? I get in maybe 1-2 hours Tai chi practice, so adding a few drills would not be a problem. Your video has inspired me to ask at a local level anyway, so well done sir.

We try to avoid being attacked whenever possible. And we don't recommend trying film yourself while you are under attack. It's usually best to focus on exiting the situation as quickly and safely as possible. If you're referring to some friendly sparring (not a street fight) that will be coming up in future lessons.

Ba Gua is for more experienced martial artists! Sort of a continued education type method! Ba Gua does dreadfully against experience striker like season boxers. Especially starting out! Fantastic footwork and body manipulations movements! Ba Gua is to advanced! Ba Gua concepts follow that of aikido, Ju Jitsu, wrestlering type arts! Real close up and personal! Great video though! would sell a little better if there were more guys involved! You made very fine presentation!

is tai chi not good for multiple attackers?
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 6 жыл бұрын
High-level Tai Chi can certainly be used against multiple attackers, but that is not its primary focus. Bagua STARTS with multiple attacker training, and it assumes multiple attackers in its fighting strategy.

Hey, I know this is an old video but could you demonstrate an arm breaking technique within this bagua sequence when the attacker initiates a bjj tackle? You already turned and began walking away from his tackle but is there an arm/finger or hand breaking technique within the sequence without fully engaging? By fully engaging I mean that you are ready to move on to the next attacker
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 7 жыл бұрын
There are definitely plenty of sequences like that in our Bagua as the positioning allows. You should be able to find something like that in one of our many free videos. You will definitely get plenty of training for that should you officially become on of our Bagua students.

Hey ok thank you for that and for the prompt reply. I'm not in the United States but were I in your area I would definitely become a student. I am in China and am looking to do bagua at some stage. An instructor I said said to me lately if some bjj fighter grabs you break their hands, fingers and arms. It is a very interesting and direct concept of the idea of it is demonstrated perfectly in this video. Keep upi the good work and thank again.

Wishy washy replies. Mr Clear has no need of prevarication - his expertise is obvious. My own main teacher was Miss Rose S C Li, said to be the finest Hsing-I/Ba Gua teacher to leave China in the modern era (according to RW Smith). Obviously, I also practised T'ai Chi and Hsing-I with her but Ba Gua was always my favourite. What a shame that I'm such a long way away from you. This is my 50th year of practice, and I think I'm just about starting to get the idea.... She always said that you should never mix languages . If we are speaking English, Miss Li was my teacher. I suppose though, that hsi fu or hsi gung sounds much more exotic....
