Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory disease that targets tthe central nervous system, comprising the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.
In people with MS, the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath, a fatty substance that insulates nerve fibers.
Our main goal for this animation was to emphasize the degradation of the myelin sheath, and visualize the dismantling of this protective covering in a compelling and accurate manner.
In this sequence, we see a plasma cell, a key player of the body’s own immune system, secreting antibodies that latch onto the myelin sheath. This binding leads to the sheath's deterioration, subsequently disrupting signal transmission along the axons. A T cell is also nearby, emitting cytokines, further contributing to myelin damage.
Myelin is a fatty material that wraps around nerves, acting as insulation and enhancing their ability to transmit signals swiftly between the brain and various body regions. This protective layer has proteins that can become targets for the immune system. Damage to the mylelin sheath within the central nervous system leads to many symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis (MS).
