El mejor profesor de fonética (de los +/- 150 profesores de chino que he conocido en 30 años). Solo que yo cambiaría ese “LLH” por “LlH” (☑️) porque el semitercer tono empieza bajo, pero baja aún un poco más antes de subir (☑️ ) yo al semi tercer tono lo enseño como “sexto” tono. 👌

You always somehow make videos that answer questions I've had about Mandarin. Thanks for putting this one to rest.

This was so helpful. I would love to see more videos more where you just talk in Chinese the way you do, with some English for the harder words. I feel like I could listen to you talk about anything. Share your thoughts with us!

I was about to comment that the year 1999 is usually pronounced with only the middle 9 in second tone, but then you addressed that later. This is just from my own observation, so I could be wrong, but for the example sentence at 11:47, I think sometimes people will pronounce 給 and 米 both in third tone, with a slight pause in between. I think in long sentences (or perhaps when you need a second to think of the next word you are going to say or for whatever reason), in these situations there could be two third tones in a row (well, not really in a row, since there's a slight pause). Also, if the pause if very short, the second third tone might be slightly lower in pitch than the first one. Not sure if that's right or not. Does that make any sense to you? I'm going to listen out for it to see if I hear it that way. Another interesting thing about that example is that if you say 買兩個 instead of 買兩把, the 兩 retains its tone, and thus 買 becomes second tone. So you need to know the entire next semantic unit (and not just the next character) in advance before saying the 買 out loud. Also, if you say 請你給我 it would be parsed as 請你 - 給我, and thus would be 2323, but because 米老鼠 is a name (even though it can be parsed into two semantic units), 請你給 is put together. So in order to parse correctly, you need to know that information. So you actually need to understand the meaning of the entire sentence in order to pronounce it correctly. Of course, over time this becomes second nature, and you don't even need to think about consciously. But I would have benefited from seeing this video a few years ago, before I figured it out on my own intuitively and by listening.

Please make a video on consecutive neutral tones and how they are pronounced. There's a good discussion of it at "How are consecutive neutral tones pronounced?" - you could use it for that video.

6:19 its a little confusing you put the numbers 223 but the accents on the syllables are 323, you shouldve kept the accents 333 or made them 223

I’ve asked different teachers this and they couldn’t answer, Ty!!! For 雅爾塔 can’t we keep the first 3rd tone since the second syllable is 2nd tone?
@ignitemoment
@ignitemoment 7 ай бұрын
I'm not a teacher, but as a native speaker, my answer is yes, you can keep the first 3rd tone, because some people pronounce it like that. However, if you put the word in a long sentence and speak fast, you will find it easier and more natural to pronounce it in the 2nd tone.

Regarding tone shifts: there really is no all-encompassing comprehensive one-video-covers-it-all video on youtube about that. Regarding monetization: just about no one teaching Chinese has in-video sponsorships. I've seen iTalki sponsor videos a few years ago Skritter also sometims sponsors videos. I do think because of all the competition sponsorships and ads can get revenue. I plan to make no videos, hope it helps. 加油!

@@xuexizhongwen this is their Job they do this to earn money for their Family. I have neither family nor money, so I try to figure out ways they can monetize from freeloaders like me, e.g. by attracting your comments that drives the algorithm, which loves engagement. Thanks for asking! Any other qs?
