It looks like some people really do read the description. The other channel mentioned in the description (Let's Explore) is getting subs (even though it doesn't have any videos yet). Videos for "Let's Explore" will be coming in the next few days, be sure to watch each episode and vote at the end on what to do next in the adventure. I'm not telling you guys what that particular channel is about yet but... I will say it's going to be very interactive. For those wondering though... "Let's Explore" (kzbin.info/door/R7i2K59kFOjYZ0tGgS7AOg) is not my secret channel, It's my 11th channel. The secret channel is my 8th channel. My 9th channel is "What The Heck Just Happened" (kzbin.info/door/XWdCNzSx5gYOm9XWDaACTQ) and my 10th channel is "How To Quickly" (kzbin.info/door/Z1GQeIhG-CSvwLHEkc9Mow). Viewers of the secret channel are allowed to leave comments telling other people about it but for now, I'm not mentioning it. These other channels DO NOT INTERFERE with the creation of OSFirstTimer videos (so don't worry about that), OSFirstTimer videos can only be made when Diana is available. Simply enjoy my other channels while you wait for more OSFirstTimer videos :)

The problem with the installations (whenever I've run into them) is that you're likely using an unsupported hard drive bus. For example is it SATA or IDE or (the others) that is required. When the VM was being made (or afterwards in the settings) you'll find a way to change the type of hard disk it presents itself as. Normally most custom (non-mainstream) distros will work with IDE (old school tech) because that's the default support compiled into the kernels. The only other thing would be to check that the virtual hard disk is even attached. Random: been watching for years (Windows 8 review put me in hysterics and since then have been addicted to the channel). There's something quite humbling watching a non-tech using what we take for granted that really helps us realign how we view IA, UI and UX across all of tech. It's been entertaining and informative to watch. Has Diana ever tried to get herself involved in user testing for council or government websites where users are assigned tasks to complete and give their feedback. Her insight might make quite a difference to many broken/horrid experiences the public have to deal with. Keep up the vids. Love them. 👍😊
@jezbon8 жыл бұрын
Yep. At end of video I noticed you're using SCSI for hard disk attachment. See if you can switch it to SATA and give Dragon-whatever or 4M another go at installing. 🙂 If you can't change from SCSI try out Oracle VirtualBox ('tis free), that'll work.

We have a paradox here. Your Mum is a saint for putting up with your passion for video and OS's and you are a saint for spending the time with her. Here in the US it seems to be the exception rather then the rule. As some have been known to say down there. good on the both of ya.
@vicr1238 жыл бұрын
I think what happened with your distributions is that it had issues with finding the virtual hard disk. :) /dev/sda is _usually_ the first hard disk on your PC, and /dev/sdb is _usually_ the second. If /dev/sda can't be found, then that means that Linux can't find the first drive. :) EDIT: Jerome Bonnet noted that you're using SCSI as the hard drive bus. Try changing that to SATA or IDE and things should work. :)

Sounds like VMWare's virtual disk is on an unsupported controller for these distros. You might want to go into the Virtual Machine Settings window and check what attachment method is being used; SCSI might be the default, but there's also SATA and IDE. Try adding a new virtual disk and choose a different virtual disk type (it'll be the first screen after choosing to add a new hard disk). One of the three should work.

Your mother has tried a lot of Linux distributions, I think a video of her recommending a good distro for those that are not that 'tech savvy' would be most appreciated, specially with the raise of the Linux market in a lot of companies and in schools. Normally when you search for newby-friendly distros most of the recommendations are done by tech experts and not by novice users themselves which I think their opinion is more valuable. Good channel keep it going!

@20:47 When you entered 'n', you did so at the # prompt. That's the root login for a shell (Bash in this case). The Bash shell interpreter then looked for a command named 'n'. Specify a disk (using the logical name assigned to it)... probably /dev/sda or /dev/hda. As root try " lshw -class disk ". You should see a list of the disks (one you allocated in that virtual system gubbins). Then given the disk name you can start fdisk or cfdisk. e.g. # fdisk /dev/sda then you will be able to enter your 'n' command to create a new partition. Given a disk name /dev/sda you will divide it up... partition it... with say /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 etc. Each partition has its own filesystem, and the filesystem type is something you will also need to consider when partitioning a disk. Say you created a new empty partition and it's name /dev/sda1 (on the sda disk), then you use mkfs.ext4 to create an ext4 type filesystem. mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1 I prefer 'parted' or better still 'gparted' for doing this stuff.

I presume the reason neither of these OS could find /dev/sda is because you haven't initialised the drive by adding an MBR, or GPT to edit partition tables on. VMware has given you a shiny, brand new, unformatted, hard disk, and they are *both* expecting that you already have the MBR from the OS that came with your PC. I suspect they wouldn't cope well with a PC that came with Windows 8, or 10 either, since the fdisk tool is really best on MBR disks, and 8 & 10 default to installing on GPT. The way I usually _think_ of partitions isn't about dual-, or multi-boot, but in terms of the boot partition, system partition, work partition, scratch disk and / or recovery partition. Windows 10 defaults to a boot partition, a recovery partition, a backup partition and the system partition, but only the system partition is mounted with a DOS drive letter once you've got to the desktop. Because VMware uses sparse images (by default) for VMs hard drives, you could easily assign 5Tb to your test OS, even if your physical drive is only 1Tb and already has Windows and a bunch of VMs already installed on it... The host would run out of disk space before the VM, and VMware would suspend the guest OS with an error long before you filled the 5Tb, but until the host runs out of space, "everythings' gravy".

I suppose the virtual disk was not actually mounted, thus why you couldn't execute cfdisk along with the installer.
@LuanCristianThums8 жыл бұрын
Quite the contrary, you have to unmount disks before partitioning them. If I am not mistaken, when you open cfdisk without any argument (like they did) it defaults to /dev/sda (the first disk in a Linux system). So either the 30GB disk Diana set is not /dev/sda or it was somehow not actually added to the machine. Checking the available disks with "lsblk" and then running "cfdisk /dev/sdX" (where /dev/sdX is the appropriate disk) would have done it.
