@@vladutzuli LOL - If you understood English then you would know that 'Industry' is any form of MANUFACTURING! There were large Factories and workshops making manufactured goods for millennia. The word 'deindustrialization' is widely used by scholars in regard to the British suppression of manufacturing in India - look up "De-industrialisation of India" on Wikipedia. Indian textile manufactures dominated the world market, Indian Wootz was pronounced the best steel in the world in 1790. India had a large shipbuilding industry and produced guns and cannon as good as any in Europe etc. The whole point is that as H.H. Wilson and Friedrich List etc. pointed out, Britian's steam-powered Industrial Revolution was both financed and could not have succeeded without Britain looting and suppression of competition of Indian manufacturing and prevention of any industrial development in India etc. If you read Prof. Jason Hickel's article on AJEnglish - he stresses this link to the British Industrial Revolution. BTW - the Dutch were using Peat-power and windmills for manufacturing before the Brits used steam-powered engines and most of Britain's 'industrial revolution' started off in small shed-like workshops not in large Mancunian factories with smoke stack chimneys!

If it comes to attention of viewers, the infrastructure growth is multi dimensional. Roads, metro, green spaces along the waterfront, airport, bullet train, redevelopment of dilapidated buildings & slums, basic infrastructure such as storm water drains, water treatment plants, sewage treatment etc. Many projects not covered here. Besides one major aspect is totally missed. Mumbai & perhaps Maharashtra has one of the best urban renewal system in place whereby dilapidated buildings can be redeveloped to suit modern needs and still be a win-win for all. I have not seen such phenomenal urban renewal take place at such massive scale simultaneously elsewhere. Something every Mumbaikar & Maharashtrian should be proud of.
@ahoog69 Жыл бұрын
While I sincerely hope that these infrastructure projects improve the lives of those that live in and around Mumbai, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed to hear about the massive Coastal Highway project. As someone who lives very close to Los Angeles, I am intimately familiar with large highway systems, and the congestion and pollution they inevitably bring. I know this is easy for me to say from afar, but perhaps the people living in that area would've been better served by several well-thought-out light rail options instead of an immense highway snaking along the coast.
@PranavKovale Жыл бұрын
Rail is necessary and already is getting better than ever, its a simultaneous growth that is happening. But the amount of road transport that happens in the city which connects it with the outside cities and states, we need highways! Railways are not a replacement, just a convenience to those who are struggling to use the existing congested railways. The city does not have the luxury to build big highways inside the metropolitan areas as land acquisition is a big issue which also creates delays and are a very expensive affair, so the government have to look outside the city to build good infrastructure that helps divide the traffic for heavy and light vehicles. Pollution is not going to increase, but the road congestion that is happening currently inside the city has to be eased out, pollution can be controlled by using more of CNG, electric and other green options like hydrogen which the government is working on currently. We might get to see a better future if the development continues like today. I can speak for the city and its people because, I have been a resident from last 33 years and have seen the city grow. The development is literally compounding in the last decade, the accidents have reduced, security has increased, calamities are controlled better. I have seen people travelling daily for 8 hours for job in the city, so what's happening and what's planned for the city ahead is very necessary.
@notmyhandle1144 Жыл бұрын
There are enough upcoming railway projects in Mumbai. You cannot expect everyone to commute by railways. There will always be a huge number of people who want to travel by road and it is impossible to widen the existing roads without creating a traffic nightmare
@prateekgautam5514 Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. Despite having such a huge traffic jam only a small percentage of people travel by car or personal vehicle. Coastal road is a very old project thought out in the 60s and perhaps it made sense back then but now it foolish. There are a lot of hot fishing zones, local ecosystem that has been affected. It's neither good for local communities nor it is good for other species. On top of that ever increasing seawater level which threatens to submerge marine drive, Nariman point, Colaba, and other areas of South Mumbai by 2050 means half of the costal road will be under water 15 years after it's fully functional. Many American and European cities who had made highways along their coastal lines destroyed them, even in this video they said the same. Many European countries such as Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Austria, Hungary destroyed their old highways and built alternate transit system such as trams, metro, RITS etc. They disincentivized cars and personal vehicles and promoted public transport. Many areas in these cities cars aren't even allowed. Cars and highways will always destroy cities trains and trams will always save them.

I was born and raised in this city, but eventually, I moved out. Unfortunately, it has become worse over time, with increasing traffic, severe water logging, and deteriorating infrastructure. Even at 1 am-midnight, you can get stuck in traffic. This city might be manageable for those who have been living here for a long time and have become accustomed to the crowds and traffic. However, if you are moving in from outside, you might find it difficult to wait until you can leave. About 10 years ago, the conditions were not as bad as they are now. Currently, the city has experienced an explosion in population growth, leading to issues with overpopulation, inadequate infrastructure, and poor planning. It's uncertain what the situation will be like in another 10 years. While Pune is currently considered better in comparison, it, too, seems to be facing a growing crowd as time goes on.

The problem with indian cities is the urban planning, they are just making it work. Not creating economies of scale. You can shrink mumbai to half with big parks and other amenities if you start building 40-50 story buildings. After watching the slow progress in India over many years and some Indian people over-hyping their country, it's good to see real improvements now. Frankly handling tens of millions of people in such a small space is mind-boggling but I'm glad there are engineers and people working on that. Hopefully like in Singapore, poor people will be given the chance for home ownerships and the slums are removed for good.

Well, the population of the Mumbai metropolis is over 25 million people (then consensus taken as of 2011). The population of London is over 8 million (similar to New York), and it is twice the size of Mumbai. Therefore, given the vastly larger population per sq/km of land area, Mumbai City planners and Central authorities have perhaps close to 4x as much work load, planning/management and restrictions to upkeep in order to even attempt to uphold the same standards as their western counterparts.
@tarjd6796 Жыл бұрын
@@stone-xl2nl The question that should be asked is what are currently the determining factors that are restricting development schemes in these areas? I see locations like these representing potential suburban neighbourhood developments that can house the nearby populace of Mumbai. I'm aware that with schemes such as the industrial corridor complex and smart cities, that development has frequently been hit with setbacks; land reservation protection rights being one of the known causes of these (in my opinion, this one is a failing of the govt to negotiate such risks due to oversight). If there is a potential to build/develop unabated on available land, and it's not being pursued , then there must be a reason. Either its political/burcreatic due to existing archaic legislations/bills, or there are socio-political/socio-economical factors affecting it?
