I'm a small-time DIY mechanic here in the USA, only working on my own car. I definitely would have helped Mumbo. My guess is a parasitic drain, alongside alternator failure. Even without an alternator, older vehicles will keep going until the battery goes completely flat, which takes a really long time without the radio and lights on. Chances are, that VW engine is completely pooched. Oil is pissing everywhere, he mentioned a gas leak, and now the battery is going flat. Chances are, this VW Bus is a 66-68 Kombi (which is another name for the VW bus), which means the engines are Inline flat 4 cylinders. Relatively common and cheap for an engine, I'd say you can buy a crate for around $3,500.

I don't have any noise reduction software at the minute, which means if I brightened it too much it would become super grainy! Working on getting the full Davinci resolve suite soon, so that should fix it up!

I had one fail in my other camper on Christmas Eve... 100 miles from Home...I Still made it home for Xmas, but my Ford Jayco spent Xmas weekend in a parking lot of Pep Boys. It's Xmas present was a new alternator and yellow top battery. Been working great ever since 😎

If you turn the headlights off and dont use the radio you can drive 1300km on a fully charged battery if the alternator/dynamo fails. You can drive about 1km with a broken fan belt before the engine self destructs.

I recommend "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" by John Muir. It has been standard equipment in every Air cooled VW I've owned and has everything you'll ever need to know to keep it on the road. If you want the best experience driving an old air cooled VW (Bus or Bug), learn to work on it (I mean this in a good way). They are simple to work on, even the electrical systems. A little knowledge could have had you back on the road in no time. A simple tool kit and a little knowledge will make all your VW adventures a lot more fun. Will you have to stop on the side of the road sometimes? Probably. But with the right knowledge it wont happen as often and it wont delay you long. After owning various classic VW's for the last 25 years, I can tell you that the fun and adventure of driving them never goes away.
