I Landed a Commercial for a Big Company, Here's how it Happened

I recently shot a commercial for Superpedestrian, a large electric scooter hire company that have their link scooters in locations all over the world. With a small-medium sized budget, and fairly ambitious plans, I run you through the process of how this ended up in my inbox, the development process, the treatment, and how I managed to pull it all together.

*Summary of Video Takeaways:* 1. One of Mumbo's car videos gets noticed by someone who eventually calls him up to do a commercial for a company called Superpedestrian. Personal projects and your previous works are important! 2. Communication between client and director is critical. Ross has the idea, but it's Mumbo's job to bring it to life according to the guidelines. Use references from other movies/commercials/references to help create a common ground easily understandable! 3. Make a treatment. Compile sources, references, and the general flow of the project into one document. This will become your outline, and guidelines on how to shoot, what cameras to use, how the story will go, and other critical details. It is best to wait communicate this with the client and edit as necessary until this is approved and ready for filming. 4. Now, it is ready. It’s been such a great journey to watch. You have come so far from the first video I saw of your’s from the main channel. The Mumbo I started watching was time lapse chatting about a high end pen that died too soon, using pillows for sound barriers, and taking a week for one episode before he refused to record when his mother was home. I've been doing the job of a director in an agency setting for a while. It's not typically done in the ad hoc way you were able to by reaching out through IG its more bid-based on what comes to you. In the setting I'm in at least, the reach for bid proposals is small. Your approach worked so well. Happy for you that this worked out!

Making video for agencys or even larger/international companies is relitively straight forward (I found, as being cam op/editor/grip etc - working closely with a director but not being a director) in terms of the look and feel of final products. Normally they've done a lot of work developing their style, and can provide you with extensive brand guidelines that go into detail about what their brand feel is, and a lot of the time you may be creating video for a larger campaign that already includes client approved photos, which is brilliant for matching look, feel and colour grades too.

Sounds like the key is people, as usual. Great. I am very backed up on my watch later, so maybe you got the answers in the future. But my question is about the aspect ratio. While you upload at 2:1 here, which is great as a lot of phones are 2:1 nowadays. The commercial is even wider. How does this actually turn out with eventually airing the commerical in TV and KZbin ads. Since TV is always 16:9 (so you add blanking, one of the few actual excuses to do so) - ads on KZbin can be any aspect ratio for example (even vertical which takes more space, so it's a very aggressive move). Will watch the other parts to learn about the wide lenses used
