How did I get here?

How did I get started on KZbin? How did I start Filmmaking? And, How did I get to where I am today?
In this video I cover off some of these incredibly common questions I get asked. I run through the Mumbo Life Story, going from my first ever videos, through to my BMXing era, then onto the Mumbo Minecraft era, and now onto the hybrid where I still make Minecraft videos, but also work as a cinematographer.
The point of this video is to show it was a long road, one where I didn't know the destination. I was a terrible filmmaker when I started, and I am learning with every project, trying to get 1% better everyday and every time!

That's not unique to KZbin -- being in the right place at the right time with the right stuff makes all the difference when it comes to serious breakout success. And one can't bank on that; for many very talented and hard-working people that one-in-a-million success never comes. That makes it a bad goal in and of itself, because not everyone can do it no matter how hard they work; very few people make it. But more general success, becoming very good at something, making a living off it, enjoying one's work, that's not so random -- pick something you love, and work on getting good at it. Note how much effort Mumbo put into learning about the pursuits he undertook. He watched others do it over and over, he studied how they did it, he practiced a lot, he put his heart and soul into it, and worked at it for years. The love provided the motivation for the grindy bits (there are always grindy bits). So even if you don't get rich and famous, your life will be fulfilling. Not bad, when you think about it.

Yes and no. The real answer to the question is "by just doing shit until he got good at it". I'd be willing to bet that if he'd just got bored and dropped out at any point during his first 2-3 years, few people would have noticed and even fewer would have cared. We humans (myself included) are prone to thinking that when we see someone who's really good at something its because they're uniquely qualified. But while talent is certainly useful, the more important quality is skill. And building skill means persevering through often many years of being crap at whatever you're doing but continuing to do it anyway. But as I well know from experience, perseverance is itself a hard skill to master. So much easier to just throw on a Mumbo video and zone out. Get that short term entertainment fix rather than spending time on improving a long term skill.

Boy i was about to jump on you when you said you were filming bmx and there was no art to it. Then you saw the video that made you realize. That's awesome. Never would have pegged you as a bmx rider. I was a amateur sponsored skateboarder and snowboarder. Ive worked with some guys that were amazing behind a camera and i wasn't any big time guy but the way a lot of them would see things would just blow me away. Mad respect for you bmx riders. I gotchu. First you set up a beacon and put haste on it. Then you get a conduit with a dolphin. Then you brew up all the brewable potions including regen, turtle master, and even the bad ones like weakness. Then you trap a shulker in a boat and row him all the way across the end dimension into the end portal and to your beacon (it’s normal to cry at this point). You get a golden apple, blindness sus stew, and a pufferfish. Get 3 wither skeleton skulls and summon the wither with an animal near by. The mob will turn into a wither rose. Finally, you complete raid, get bad omen again, get mining fatigue, splash yourself with all the potions, hit yourself with a spectral arrow, get hit by the shulker, go into the wither rose, eat the pufferfish, golden apple, and sus stew, and pray to dear life that the dolphins give you dolphin’s grace...and that’s how you got here.
