In this video we tackle all things creative. As a filmmaker and cinematographer I suffer from Imposter Syndrome, and a feeling of not belonging. Every filming project I create, I can only see the flaws. In this Filmmaking advice video I run through what can be done, that these are totally normal emotions to be feeling, and how to stay motivated to keep going!

This video reminded me of something an artist wrote on a post of theirs on Instagram, "You will always hate what you create because you are comparing it to the perfect image of it inside your head, but everyone else will love it because they see what had been created out of nothing." Or something to that effect... it has been years since I read it and it has helped me out a little bit with my own drawings. Love your works, Mumbo. Never stop doing what you love.

If only the latter was true. Most of us have become incredibly jaded, impressed by nothing. Creating something from nothing isn't special to us. Let's say I'm a professional jazz composer, putting my compositional magnum opus up. Some Katy Perry fan happens along it, and they say it's out-of-key garbage. An amateur/school jazz band musician comes along and tells me what I should've done differently. A random troll comes along and calls it "old people music" and tells me to get with the times. This happens across all creative fields anymore. It's like people don't seek these things out to enjoy them, but rather for an opportunity to form and give their all-important opinions and criticisms, framed as facts.

It's not just creative endeavor. I've gone from 0 coding experience to a Bay Area software engineer (I live in a 3rd world country) in 3 years. I live and breathe code and its my passion in life. Yet I constantly punish myself, seeing all the flaws in my code and in the things I do. But like you say, it's really important to remind yourself how far you've come. Impostor syndrome both propelled me forward and destroyed me. Its something everyone needs to learn to control and balance.

I’ve learned to stop hating my own work. Work until the video is complete, give it at most 2 polishing passes, that’s typically how I do my videos, and live with the results. Then again, I sometimes spend 3-5 months in preproduction... And I still cringe at the mistakes. But I’ve learned to appreciate that I did a good job.

Yeah MKBHD talked about this on his podcast at one point. I'll paraphrase since my memory is sketchy but he was saying that he's a perfectionist and could fiddle with the final video over and over and never actually release it so sometimes you just have to say "I'll set myself 2 clean-up passes and then it's going live". He definitely mentioned that once a video is live he'll compartmentalize it from his brain and try not to think about it, instead focussing on the next project instead

Dude, Mumbo, this is very inspirational. And super on the nose. I have creation paralysis over and over. I can't believe how much I make and delete before I can release. I've even gone back and purged previously released videos that were actually well received, simply because I hated them so much. I always think there's something wrong with me but this video helps me see that it's normal for creators. Well done sir. :)

I think some of the best advice I’ve ever heard about when you do things the way you’ve always done them, but you hate the results is that it’s a sign that you’re about to level-up. Also, even if you know you’re bad, don’t be afraid. Attempt the projects that scare you and you might just find that you’re better than you thought you were

As a perfectionist, I want the things that I make to be absolutely perfect, but, as much as I try, I never seem satisfied with my work. I can always find some sort of flaw in my work. This is very relatable. Almost everytime I build something and people say something like ‘Looks amazing’ I think about all the little flaws. But I think the trick is to look back, just like Mumbo said. If you look back, you see progress, and that’s nice. Anyway, have a nice weekend all!

Edit: The biggest takeaway I want you to take from this comment is that I advise you stop regretting and start reflecting. Also, I apologise if how I say all this sounds a bit assertive, it's just that you mean so much to me, it hurts me to see you being self-critical; negativity is a bit like a hole, you'll keep falling until you grab onto a wall, and you can't get out until you start climbing. this reminds me of a film maker (for the life of me I dont remember which film, sorry) who told a story about this amazing shot (I think it was a longtake) where everybody was super amazed at their work, but someone during production had forgotten to remove some bubble wrapping in the background, and now, as amazing as the shot is, every time he sees it he can't help but think "that damn bubblewrap!!!" I personally have made some projects that even years later I'm pretty proud of (in huge part thanks to the team of hardworking people that put up with my BS to come together and make it), but about 90% of projects I ever made I can't bare to look at. (and thats the ones that got made, let's not even get started on the ones that didn't make it past the concept or writing stages).

I resonate so much with this video. I play the cello and went to college to study music education. My cello professor’s favorite saying was “it could always be better” which was really hard for my perfectionist brain to deal with. To help, he would try to train our brains to look at the good as well as the bad. When we would listen back to recordings of ourselves he would encourage us to pick out at least 3 good things each time. That really helped my sanity. There is so much beauty to what we do as artists. We need to make sure we acknowledge the beauty as well as the flaws because if you looked at your work with the eyes of someone who has no skill in your field, your work is phenomenal ❤️ I have loved following you for years. We are the same age and it’s been great watching someone with similar interests’ journey in such a public space. You are amazing!

I feel this way about myself a lot. I'm a dancer and I know I'm good and have talent but when I watch videos of myself doing choreography I feel I look stupid. I get many solo parts and am often complimented but I feel I don't really deserve it. Like you said, it's important to take a step back and look at how far you've come before you beat yourself up over where you are now. It's definitely something I still have to work on but my imposter syndrome has gotten much better over time.

Spot on, Mumbo! I feel this way too about pretty much every stageplay I've ever written, especially when I listen to one being read/performed by actors. I'm cringing pretty much constantly at all the places I could have written better. So much so, that one of the ways I know I've improved is if something I wrote a long time ago feels SO cringy to me that I can't even stand to finish it! ;-D Something I find very helpful in combating this overly-critical view of your own work is to make a deliberate effort to name/articulate what you did really well or how you improved in addition to what you could have done better. Having that more balanced view is helpful for keeping morale up, and is frankly (usually) more realistic/accurate to boot.

Thank you. I have recently started offering a creativity based service and it started out really well. I enjoyed doing it for like the first few weeks but then I begin to really question my work and if what I offer is fair because of my inexperience and incapability. I've stopped looking for new clients. I take far too long to submit current projects so I can really give it my all. I fell back into some terrible habits I've tried so hard to quit. It is hard on every level of life. You making videos and me being a mechanic. Even I have the same struggles trying to find a solution to a manufacturer mistake. Some times the pressure to accomplish a task with in an allotted time is near impossible. But I got to remember to breathe an clear my mind to keep a clear focus so I don’t rush an make a huge mistake. Stay humble an do the best you can do an know this is the best you can at this moment. Time brings better things and bigger success’s. An the work is never done until you say it is. Love your videos bless you brother.

That's how I feel when I write code. I look back at stuff I've created 3-4 months ago, maybe even a year ago. Then, I tell myself "What drunk weirdo coded this?!?!" and laugh. I then commence to rewrite it with everything I've learned since then. Optimizations, tricks, tips, etc. So I fully understand your thought process, and how it feels to compare yourself, to yourself. You do great work Mumbo, and I feel you will keep striving to improve like all the other masters.
