Late Night Food Guide to Amsterdam

Abel hits the streets of Amsterdam for the best late night food in this Dutch city. He starts the night off at an Amsterdam institution, Cafe Schiller in Rembrandt Square, for the fried balls of dough and meat known as bitterballen, or “brown gold,” before biking over to Roopram Roti, a Surinamese restaurant that serves the city’s best roti.
After a few more drinks, Abel heads to FEBO, a vending-machine restaurant that serves burgers and sandwiches, and talks to a few Amsterdam locals. He ends the night at Metsut 2 for kapsalon, a dish invited in the Netherlands that's made up of French fries topped with shawarma.

I had no idea drunk people eat this! I live right next to a kapsalon joint that won a price at some point for best Turkish food diner of the Netherlands. I have fond memories of running to that restaurant with friends and eating there during free periods in high school because it was just the best thing ever! Nowadays it’s my comfort food. I thank the Turkish people for having introduced this to us because our traditional food is plain af 😂

I love Amsterdam a lot. Really fun city. Most people who don't know what this dude ate at the second location is basically Indian food. We were at this surinami place, a surinami guy spoke to us in fluent Hindi. He figured out we were Indians. We were surprised that even after 100s of years they still speak Hindi as their second language. PS: history lesson, Around half the population of Suriname is Indians and javanese people brought there by the Dutch east India company as Indentured servants.

The "French Cuisine" is like other western European countries, except for the snobby and non fancy names. We all eat bread, meat and potatoes, served in different ways. Heck, some are the same but the French invented some lame name like Tartar, which is called METT in German and you can get if for 3 euor instead of 50. Dumb snobs. Dutch people eat bread all the time, like german, french and belgians as well. You can say french fries, but it's something for west europe, like bread, like stews, etc.

I wouldnt say spanish food is very close to french food but Italian cuisine is very simular. Bread, stews, fish dishes, mountain dishes, mediterranean dishes and more. Where for example Belgium might have simular dishes to Normandie and Picardy but Occitanie is far closer to spanish food than to Belgian food. The legendary origin story of the Kapsalon: The friet kapsalon was invented in the beautifull dutch city of Rotterdam. Where after a long day of work a young barber called Nataniel Gomes would go and eat at the shoarma diner located around the corner of his barbershop. He would go there very often, to the point where they let him design his personal plate with all his favorite stuff. That's where the magical combination of fries, shoarma, salad and cheese came together for the very first time. Knowing they had created something beautifull, the plate became an essential item on their menu, calling it the friet kapsalon, "the barbershop's fries". The rest is history. Nataniel Gomes actually passed away this year, at the age of 47. But the man will go down in history as the creator of what's probably the most legendary and beloved dish to originate in this country
