Thank you for your videos! We were considering getting our 8 yr old son a Syrian for Christmas, but after watching we realized he is not ready for the commitment. My view on hamsters has changed dramatically. I thought "it's just a hamster" but now I know about the special care and environment they need to thrive. We thought the petsmart cages were cute but after being informed now they look like fancy dungeons! 😆 Have a good Christmas! 🎄

About age 10-11 would probably be the best time. They’re great pets and a great way to teach him commitment. At that time, they are learning a lot more and becoming a bit more mature ^^ but always make sure your child wants one, if they don’t they’ll neglect and treat the hamster very badly. Sit down and talk with him and see if he’s ready! ^^

CORRECTION: The cage Bon-Bon and Cloud came with i accidentally measured incorrectly. I measured it originally as 10x13 but i accidentally measured the length in CM instead of inches (2nd Correction: I meant Feet + inch, not CM as the other side of the tape measure is only in inches). The cage measures at 22x13 which is 286 sq inches. PLEASE BE AWARE i did not do this on purpose. I don't realize or slow down sometimes to notice, so TY for those kind people who questioned me instead of being mean about it. I appreciate it and now you know. Ty! CORRECTION 2: The metal wheel i mentioned i'd use for gerbils is only to be used as a backup wheel. I have no Gerbil safe wheels at this time since Gerbils are hard to find in my area of rescue. I realize now that not everyone will agree with why i'd keep it, however i've not personally had a problem with these wheels for gerbils but i'm aware i wouldn't be using it for long term if it was ever to be used for an emergency and if the wheel is DIY to have a solid surface, or just use the wheel for education videos i plan on making in the future. Ty.

A couple months back I ran into your channel and immediately grew addicted to it. You educated me on many hamster-related things such as cage size, correct water bottle types, and hamster behaviours. Originally I made the mistake of purchasing the Kaytee crittertrail (two-level), but after I watched your videos I upgraded to a 53"L x 21"W x 14"H bin cage for my male Syrian hamsters, separated. I have spent hours and days researching information on Syrian hamsters to ensure they are being properly cared for. Thank you for being so passionate about these small angels, and teaching us all.

Hello munchie. I would like to thank you for making all these videos and putting so much time and effort for making them, I myself and the pet owner as well and from the start of October I purchased a Syrian hamster. At first I had no knowledge of taking care of a hamster and sadly I bought my hamster with a very small cage. But then I start to do my research and I found your Channel, thanks to all the information provided by you and the hamster community my hamster now has a bigger cage and I'm starting to see more of my hamster's personality and so forth. I would just like to thank you for putting information for us pet owners and for future pet owners if they decide to. Keep up in the good work and I hope that clouds balls is okay!

They were also rehoming a guinea pig who was living in the little hamster cage you buy at Walmart with the yellow bottom it was literally standing in pee and poop she had no bedding and they were rehoming 7 rabbits who were all in wire bottom cages but you couldn’t even see the wire because of the caked poop I was in literal tears looking at them all 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I don't understand how that could happen, though... I mean, you even said their kids loved the hamsters. They *have* children. *They have firsthand experience of what happens when males and females get together.* It really does sound like they wanted to breed the hamsters [hence getting two from different litters] and then changed their mind. I also don't understand why people keep buying wire wheels. All you have to do is imagine how it would feel to run a marathon barefoot across a chain-link fence. Wheel size, bin size, and not keeping hamsters (even those of same sex) together may be things people need to research, but having a solid base to run on and keeping males separate from females should be common sense! I seriously love everything you do, btw.

On Christmas Day, my hamsters cage was where it normally is. I was in my room sleeping when all I heard was a crash, and just like that, the cage had fallen. All I could think about was getting him out of the cage so I quickly rushed over to get him. There was shavings all over the floor and it had all broken apart. I dug through my hamsters bedding and finally found him. I woke up my parents and they helped me clean it up a bit and put little pieces of it back together. During this whole 1 hour process, my hamster, Thunder, was biting me so hard that I was bleeding. But I did not, and still do not give a crap.

Back when my siblings and I got our syrians in 2007, we were told they have to live on their own, but we could keep them in the same cage for the first little bit. We got the Penn Plax "Here and There and Everywhere" cage (google says it's 15x9x18" in dimensions. I think the 18 is the height) for my sister and my hamsters, and my brother got a teensy critter trail that was listed as okay for a dwarf (it was maybe a foot by a half foot. It was tiny). About four months into us being hamster owners, we realized my sister's female hamster wasn't female, so I moved mine to an old aquarium I found out in a shed (cleaned out best I could first). Persephone ended up having nine babies. She didn't end up culling them, but the babies ended up eating each other. It was horrible. Now over a decade later, I'm wanting to try being a hamster mom again, but I'm going to do it the right way, get an appropriately sized cage (I'm hoping to get a 40 gallon breeder tank from petco tomorrow), etc.

I'm lucky my hamster came from a really good breeder. She's part of this hamster hobbyist network and they have all the lineage of their hamsters trees (I have my hamsters family tree to her great grandparents) because some of them show their hamsters so they want to know possible carried genes etc (idk really, have no intention of breeding mine). It really opened my eyes to the difference between shop hamsters and small breeder hamsters. Mines so much bigger/friendlier/healthier than some of the shop ones I've seen. Inbreeding is just such a sad thing...

The cage is the Ferplast Favlova. It’s a European cage so I’m surprised they were able to buy it. Ferplast make some very very good quality cages like the mini Duna (only big enough for a hospital/retirement cage), Duna Multy, Maxi Duna Multi, Criceti 15, Criceti 100, and Mary (+some other I can’t remember)l their tubes are also very good quality and size but unfortunately they also make some very small unsuitable cages and products.

My take on this: the previous owner was trying to produce babies and given her hamsters are already 6months old, she most likely already did. She probably had the full intention to breed, maybe for fun or to make some money, who knows, but whoever knowlingly puts an intact male and a female together wants to produce babies.
@MunchiesPlace5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. After making this video, i realize if they lived together since 5 weeks of age, they would of had a lot of kids by now. I think they are a retired breeding pair. Why else would you say "Bonded"? I don't see people wording that when they're rehoming sisters or brothers from the same litter. :(

Hey i can definitely answer this but the progress of Bon-Bon was on IG in several end of year posts back in 2018. Cloud went on to be adopted by loving owners in 2019. Bon Bon took a lot longer to rehome but found a loving home with a family. As for suspected babies, Bon Bon went to the vets after she began losing weight around x-mas, where it was determined she was previously swollen down below due to already having pups before arriving at the rescue. So she was previously was pregnant and losing weight naturally. So our suspicions that her past owners were breeding, were made clear by our vets especially since they gave them up at 6 months old which is the time a retired breeding pair usually stops. So we were pissed to learn this since we don't know if she culled her pups, was separated from her pups after a few weeks, we just don't know. Ever since then we've seen an occasional CL ad that looks to be backyard breeder related down in that area, and of course we always flag backyard breeders. So Bon-Bon was a mother, we just never saw her pups.

I wouldn't use the wire wheel for gerbils Munchie! (Or other rodents) I work at a vets and also own gerbils, we get in cases of broken toes and degloved tails because sometimes the gerbils trip and get body parts stuck in the mesh :O It can also cause bumblefoot in the long run. I honestly wouldn't worry too much about giving gerbils wheels, it's not essential if they have a nice deep bedding to make tunnels (8 inches+ is recommended). Keep up the good work, I love seeing your rescue and foster hammies ❤️

Hey munchie ! So I recently adopted a surrendered Syrian hamster from my local pet store and although she is just a baby, she's very very scared of people. She's very shy and anxious and does not like to be handled or have her cage cleaned, and bites fingers hard when offered a hand to sniff. How can I get her more used to humans? And is there any way to make her more at ease? She's currently in a 70L bin with plenty of hidey houses and bedding to burrow in but she still seems very stressed. ):

I think you mis-measured that cage? There's no way that's only 10 inches long. 10 inches is roughly one and a half hands. And it's probably bigger than 13 inches too.

Thanks for saving so many babies Also- I thought Syrians did best with at least 6” but up to 12? Tho I do understand being a rescue you need to reserve bedding for all.... Again i think you do amazing things!!!
