Here's a short video of my 1970 Trans Am so one may listen to the Autogear Muncie M22Z Gear whine...The "Z" Model has the 2.98 First gear ,they also have the M22W(wide Ratio) and of course the standard close Ratio M22.. In Italian Made Gearsets... I'm using the original 12 bolt 3.31 gearset and a 255 60R 15 in the rear. Check out my other video if you would like to hear the 464 Round Port engine Thanks and Enjoy!!

It's a beautiful sound. I took my 78 Corvette 350 out and parked it and dropped in a 454 LS6 coupled up to a M22 Rock crusher. She's a whiner but I love it.. Nothing like displacement..

that brings back so many memories of me at 6-7 years old, sitting in the backseat of my dad's 1970 Chevelle SS. It had the ivory and black interior and I remember that whine, the chrome shifter ball, and the hi-beam indicator light between the speedometer and the tach,...it may have originally been blue, but it was faded purple.

I just built a Muncie using a 1970 M20 case and one of these Autogear M22W gear sets. Haven't ran it yet because the engine is in the machine shop but I'm excited for a WIDE ratio M22 with the rock crusher sound. I used Paul Cangialosi's book and it was simple.

Yes, we can be thankful to Autogear for keeping the Muncie alive and providing the lower gear ratios and for Paul, he has some great videos on you tube and just developed a steel mainshaft rear bearing support for the muncie ..he's quite knowledgable on them....

How do you like the 2.98 first gear with your 3.31 rear gear? Are you happy with that combo? I am thinking about the M22z gear set to replace my M20 and I have a 3.36. Just trying to get a feel if 1st gear would be to much.
@MEC1955
@MEC1955 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Harold, the final drive ratio with my 3.31 gear (9.86) is almost the same as having a wide ratio 2.52 with a 3.90 rear gear (9.82), it definitely helps on the acceleration,...and you can keep the rpms down on the highway, granted another gear would be nice...you would have a final drive ratio of 10.01..slightly less than a 4.10 and a 2.52. (10.33)...hope that helps you to make up your mind!!Thanks...

Paul is an excellent builder but its pretty sad that a transmission with helical cut gears makes that much noise. Might as well have a stronger set of straight cut gears. Just my opinion.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 5 жыл бұрын
Its because they are semi-helical and for your information spur gears are not as strong as helical gears, a common misconception. Semi helical gives you the advantage of less end loading and heat generation while keeping 3 teeth in contact and eliminating high separation loads.
@neapolis6919
@neapolis6919 5 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideo : OK, That makes sense. More tooth contact but still seems like a lot of end thrust but I guess only so much can be done in a gearbox design without sacrificing something. Thanks for the great Videos.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 5 жыл бұрын
@@neapolis6919 The Porshe GTP cars have semi helical gears. There is more to it then "end thrust". Pumping losses as well as gear separation forces increase with spur gears. So oil dynamics and case design play an important part. Spur gears in a Muncie will not live long unless a cuff system or better case design is used. Most racing gears are spur design because tooling costs are cheaper and certain symmetry allows for easier interchangeable ratios using the same gears for example in 2nd or 3rd positions.
