Is there a habit among south-american Spanish speakers that they ommit sounds represented by letters "s" and "z" at end of the words? Because of that I hardly make out what they are saying.

+John Wayne That very well may be true! Some places more than others! Especially in places like Cuba, I'd say. :)

+John Wayne in the south of spain too, as well as the canary islands. and not only some consonants a the end are omitted but also in the middle. Actually american spanish inherited this way of speaking because most sailors that went to america during the conquest age were from andalucía and the canary islands
