A quick demo using my new box of Mungyo handmade pastels.
. good selection of darks and lights
. some great warmer greens for Australian landscape
. love the range of purples and mauves
. a good "medium" soft
. layers well
. blends well
Overall I enjoyed using these. There are some very bright colours that mightn't get a lot of use but there are also some really useful colours that are going to make this a good buy for me. Value for money - I think this set is a very good buy. An all round set , good quality, useful range of colours, and much less expensive than other similar quality brands. If you can't afford a large set of Unisons this is a good alternative.

LindyWhittonStudio Thanks so much. Do you have any advice that you would offer a pastel newbie?
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 6 жыл бұрын
My best advice is to practice a lot. Also look at lots of different pastel artists work and try and work out what it is that you love about the ones you love. This is how I started in pastels - because I loved the colour and emotion I sensed in really good pastel paintings I wanted to try and capture those same qualities. I'm still trying!!! Start with subjects you are already comfortable with and play with your pastels to see what they can do. I'm sure you will find it really rewarding and exciting s you venture into the wonderful world of pastel art. :)

LindyWhittonStudio Thank you for a thoughtful and helpful reply. Sounds like great advice to me. I'm limited on supplies right now because I have so much invested in my watercolor supplies. I'm waiting on my handmade Mungyo pastels and paper to get here from Amazon this week. I plan on binge watching your videos because so your artwork and style is my favorite from all the ones I have seen so far. Thank you for taking the time to show us newbies the ropes. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours...

Thanks for this demo Lindy. I enjoy watching your videos and always learn something new. It sounded like some colours were almost like an oil pastel on the paper while others sounded quite scratchy and hard. Did you find the hardness varied from one to another? Possibly it was just the different mark marking that made them sound different?
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Leigh-Ann. I always find that softness varies within a brand and the Mungyos are no exception. I think part of it was just the mark making as I didn't find any that had the hardness/scratchiness of say a Rembrandt .

I love the way this has evolved, I have some unison pastels which are gorgeous, but my biggest set is the 120 Rembrandt. Also someone bought me unexpectedly a lot of white pastelmat, they didn’t realise about the coloured ones and I didn’t like to say anything, what can I do with it to make it better for as a colour for pastel painting or can I use it in its white state, how would that affect the painting.
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Lucky you having a gift of white pastelmat, now you can colour it any colour you like. I use watercolours, acrylic inks or thin acrylic washes to colour my homemade boards. You can also simple create a pastel underpainting using whatever colours you like and then wash it down with a rubbing alcohol to create a uniform pastel wash. It's also fine to paint on white and some pastel artists prefer this as they fell the white enhances the colours . I prefer choosing a base colour that will work with my painting. Happy pastelling!

I don't like the set I bought at first launch because they failed to wet well or at all. I'm interested in many media, but going through pastel and ws crayons again. If they won't aquarelle I just can't stand them. I hope they change. I wonder if their Artist squares do. Always looking for new colors 😍
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 3 жыл бұрын
They're not really meant to wet- but alcohol works great to make washes. Soft pastels lose there sparkle and luminosity when wetted so you might be better sticking to ws crayons.

Hi, love your videos!! Where did you get your pastels from and how much did you pay for them?
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 6 жыл бұрын
I paid $380 US from Jerry;s Artarama online in one of the big sales. I paid another $117 US to get them shipped to Australia. So it was a bit of a gamble as I'd never tried their handmade pastels - but it was such a bargain for a full set of handmade pastels , and they got some very good reviews, so I couldn't resist.

Hi Lindy, nice to see the trans-world Mungyo pastels are now in your hands. they appear to be much harder than Senneliers. did you find any drawback to them..they are dirt cheap in the u.s.
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 6 жыл бұрын
I think they're pretty good value for money Dave. They are harder than Senneliers but that's not a bad thing - those Senneliers are very crumbly!! It's still early days with them but I think I;m going to be very happy with them.

Hello Lindy. Just buying a set of 48 mungyo soft pastels from gumtree. So was interested in your review. Will mine be like the handmade ones or are they very different?
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, I don't think they will be the handmade ones . Mungyo have 3 different quality- the basic square Mugyo pastels, The Mungyo Professional Gallery and the Mungyo Gallery Handmade. The squares are a student grade and have a lot of filler so make a bit of dust but that's what I started out with and I still use them sometimes for underpaintings. I've not tried the Gallery Professionsal which are a round shape but if they're the ones you end up with I'd love to hear what you think of them.

LindyWhittonStudio and some of the Mungyo Gallery professional pastels are offered in square sticks as well. The “Gallery” line is their top offerings and I purchased a wood hinged boxed set of 72 a couple years ago at a very low price during a holiday sale and before I knew much about pastels. Now I am understanding just how lucky I am to own these. I removed the foam that had the individual cut outs, pulling off the glued on uncut bottom layers to reuse, added thin wood strips to create dividers and converted that to a functional storage box much like the wonderful hinged type offered by Jacksons. Great investment. The Mungyo handmade types which are comparatively inexpensive here in the US are the same pastels as Jacksons handmade pastels so I am adding a set of those and I am also ordering open stock fromJacksons as Mungyo does not offer open stock.

I tell my students that they can start with the any brand including the cheaper ones , and gradually build their collection as they progress. I own many brands and started with a simple, cheap box of Mungyo and another of Conte sticks. The more expensive brands are wonderful to work with because of their concentrated pigments and wide rage of more subtle colours but this new range of handmade pastels from Mungyo bridges the gap for those on a budget who would like a handmade pastel at an affordable price with many of the qualities of the more expensive brands.

I bought the SoHo’s Urban 120 on 4/17 and I really like them. I have only had one prove to be un-bendable but I will make it work for me. I was told "don’t waste your time and money with cheaply priced products.". But, I agree with You and found that nothing ventured was nothing gained. I would have missed out on a truly wonderful product; so thanks for reminding me that it doesn’t have to be expensive to be good.

Thanks for that- I've been looking at the Jackson's handmade and thinking they did look similar. It's hard to get the Myungo Gallery in Australia without paying very expensive shipping from the US but the Jacksons site has great shipping rates . Now I can let my students know that Jacksons are the same as they all love using my Myungos in class.
@farmwife7944
@farmwife7944 3 жыл бұрын
LindyWhittonStudio the shipping rates are indeed crazy and don’t make sense. It is cheaper for me to order from Jackson’s in the UK with their shipping rate of about $4 US then to pay shipping for art supplies purchased here in the US that start at $5 and go up, plus Jackson’s has wonderful supplies and offers European brands at a cheaper cost than local stores. Shipping rates from Canada are pretty high too except for some companies willing to absorb some of the cost (such as the discounted pet meds stores) plus the time in transit is longer than it is when packages come from the UK. I have purchased a couple of beautiful sewing magazines coming from Australia and the shipping cost was more than the cost of the magazine itself (referring to the Australian sewing magazines that had no equal and have since stopped publication but offer back issues). Stay safe my friend as you enter your warmer season and folks want to get together in large groups. We are in early fall here in upstate NY, US just a couple weeks before our trees turn brilliant and beg painting. Thanks so much for your videos. We live in a rural area at the base of the Adirondack Mts. and art classes and workshops do not happen here, even before COVID, but you artists generously sharing your talents have brought me into the wonderful world of multi media art. There is no high speed internet either but the youtube videos are accessible from the limited data and speeds I have via satellite (which begs a mention that home schooling our students left them out of the loop compared to wealthier areas that contracted with high speed companies). Sending love from the US and please pray we survive intact from the voting, protests, and health challenges.

Can some one tell me why so many good artists make instructional videos with such poor production quality? The production quality does not need to be high but it certainly should be better than this. The sound was too low and echoy and the camera was on auto focus so everytime your head got in front of the camera it went out of focus on the paper over and over.
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. I agree it would be great to have better production quality. I do it for free, I cant afford better equipment or training, I learn from my mistakes and I try to do better. Occasionally I forget to turn the autofocus off and this time I was filming somewhere different than usual. So there are some of the reasons some of my videos turn out sub par. Its hard to make the time to do a 1 hour video every week and when onecomes out sub par I still throw it in since Ive spent a lot of time on it and someone might find it useful.
