I've been waiting for this analysis and you didn't disappoint. There is styling and there is engineering. Most people respond to the styling and don't see the engineering behind this vehicle. That is the real story. Thanks, Munro.

Engineering doesn't mean a thing if the styling is ugly. Just look at the '39 Airflows from Chrysler. It's never been zero sum, it's just engineers don't matter as far as sales. All Cyber owners know is the panel gaps, rust and other issues (gas pedal fiasco) don't speak well of any engineering on Cyber. 🎬

​@@MashDaddy They didn't try to minimize the Cyber coefficient much at all because they liked the dumb wedge- it cuts like a brick into the air; like the Lambo Countach you are fooled by the slick design. Claimed .034 real world .034-.038. Rivian has .030 D.C.; Model 3 refresh .021 for comparison. 🎬

The flutes/channels are for drainage to prevent water/dirt buildup and ultimately prevent corrosion. They obviously have nothing to do with E-coat drainage in this application, since the panel has already been ecoated prior to being bonded to the stainless exterior.

E-coated inner skin would very likely be dried and cured before bonding to SS outer skin, So it would be expected the drain holes are for condensation between panels (weep holes).

The "flutes and gaps" look like moisture drains to me. The e-coat panel is probably already dry when attached to the stainless skin. Did you catch the Cybertruck and hammer silhouette stamped into the inner panel at 9:55 ?

I love your tear down videos. A quick question though, at the end, you said that you will be putting the side panels back on and doing torsional testing. We saw one corner of the mild steel stamping that was peeled up, and you said you wanted to peel up some more. Won't this compromise the torsion testing?

Okay, I paused as soon as I saw this, a 9:59 there is a dent shaped like a Cybertruck right in the middle of the panel backing. Do they ever mention this in the video? Edit: A little bit later, you can see a hammer shape in front of the CT, like it's dropping onto the front of the truck.

Very infomative video !!! I wonder how much of the current casting could be reuse without making too much changes, to make a minivan with 3 rows or an utilitary cargo van with 2 front seats and a large box area, like an Amazon Rivian delivery and maybe with a slidding door?

Steel on the inside of the stainless steel panel makes me wonder about future corrosion. Dirt, mud, salt can get trapped up inside those pockets along with moisture and cause rust inside the panels. I've seen plenty of old trucks rust out from similar seams.

Agree. Lets hope the e-coating on the steel stands the test of time. The nice thing here is that one can replace every stainless panel on the vehicle with a wrench.

That black coating last 2 salt winters maximum before it starts turn brown. Needs cavity wax but Tesla don't do rust profing.

@MunroLive A deep dive into the side doors will be tremendous. I remember the Tesla engineers showing how the inners were laser welded to the outer around the perimeter without discoloration of the stainless.

Maybe the near center crease spot weld was to straighten the stainless panel. Remember the early days of the truck it used to have a ripple in the stainless around the wheel arch when you looked down the vehicle (maybe a pinch point and warped the exterior). Now, of course this has been rectified.

In my opinion, the “flutes and escape paths” have nothing to do with the coating process (the coating is done before the stainless steel plates are glued on, which means there are no enclosed cavities anyway). To me, these areas look more like measures to avoid draw creases: Material is “used up” here that would otherwise form creases in the drawn part.

Oof, a cast frame on a pickup truck is a serious weakness and I can see why WD broke his so easily. When It comes to trucks, flex helps absorb impacts and abuse, if it's to stiff the chassis will fail. Lastly lacking a ladder frame restricts what applications the truck can be used with.

Tesla linked together with Spacex definitely packs a punch. I just saw some thing saying space x wants to be able to build one of those stainless steel starships every day! That’s the kind of production goals that creates mind blowing technology.

not to be rude but they pack nothing together! mettalurgy isnt just limited to tesla and spacex! get of your high horse! those very cheap japanese Kei truck are body on frame, single cab, an actual usable bed with colapsible sides.... thats how a truck should be! the way Sandy talks its like the cybertruck is the only or best way to go WTF!!!!! does the cybertruck also comes in single cab or longer bed?! does it have a dually?! a gooseneck?!

the Mercedes Sprinter, Vw transporter, ford Transit vans comes in hundreds of configurations body on frame with dually, single/dual cab, bed or just frame for all kinds of applications, dump truck, RV conversion, ambulance, bus and much more, even crane mounted, the cybertruck is definetly the worse truck ever made in terms of practicality.

Good point, but also important to remember that when Tesla invents new processes, structures, etc, for CyberTruck (and they invented MANY), those lessons are not lost on subsequent design/production evolutions. What can be used effectively in different models will be used, so the effort begets even better efforts "down the road".

Thanks Sandy and Jordan. Very technical, yet strangely entertaining - The Naked Cyber Truck. A guy named Desmond Morris wrote a book in 1957 that was also technical yet engaging called "The Naked Ape" It was a hypothetical tear down, inspection and comparison of Humans. Way to go Munro Live!

If salt and dirt end up in there, it will. I wouldn't expect much ending up in there as the bottom is glued shut everywhere except at the drain holes. And the wheel arch liners probably protect it from abrasion caused by the tyres flinging stuff around, so it'll take a long time. The same applies as for every car though: You should keep the car clean especially behind the plastic wheel arch liners, as that's where salt and dirt will accumulate and that's where any car will start to rust at.

Hate to interrupt the lovefest here, but could you address the weak bumper/hitch attachment structure? Its seems be dangerously inadequate for towing and vehicle recoveries. Please reference the youtube video, WhistlinDiesel Cybertruck Durability Test #1.

Given the separate gigacasting and the side raiser castings, what are the odds that Tesla might release an "old school bed" work truck? (I don't mind the triangle, but for some work application as well as truck bed campers the triangle might be prohibitive) - seems like it would be a fairly easy change... maybe on the entry level CT - it would save Tesla quite a lot of money skipping the cover as well as the added stainless steel cost for those large sides

Think "outside the box" (or "the bed") Install a full length slide-out on the bed. Suddenly you have a VERY capable, easy access truck. Then install ANOTHER slide-out attached to the "Airline tracks" on the sides. That's where your tools live. The lower slide? Pull out the slide to load loose/ bagged material (add a 6" deep removable tray?) Or you pull out the slide, load your sheet materials and slide it in. If you have various uses, build a table on wheels, preload your gear at base, roll up to the slide, transfer. . If you're a technician? Heavy tools/ racks/ component storage on the "inside" end, work table on the "rear" end of the slide. And you slide out your lightweight tools on the upper slide for easy access. . Now you have a REALLY versatile truck, fully lockable and secure.

The lower the floor of the cab and the lower the bed of the cargo box the easier it is to get in and out and to load the back. Getting these substantially lower means changing the location of a lot of components. If you see pickup trucks with really low cargo boxes they use small diameter wheels because what dictates the height of the bed is the axle and drive shaft in ICE trucks and the electric motors in electric trucks. You can lower the Cybertruck’s bed by a few inches by making the electric motors with a smaller diameter. But you can only do so much this way. Eventually the electric motor would be the same diameter as a shock absorber. Going a lot lower (below the axle height) means turning the electric motor sideways so it fits inside the wall of the box (between the quarter panel and the panel of the inside of the box. Drop the bed a LOT and you go lower than the rear bumper. Now you need to incorporate the bumper and a trailer hitch into the tailgate. So that tailgate needs to be well connected to the truck and still be able to open and close. But do that and you get a big improvement in ease of use. Of course, you can also use the suspension to lower the truck for people boarding and for loading cargo in the back. But you can only do so much before hitting the restrictions mentioned above. The depth of the Cybertruck’s storage compartment in the back, that’s how low the whole cargo box bed could be. We have low floors in city buses. Same kind of thing.

Those spot welds would need over 500kg of clamp and more than 10k amps of current.

I was so excited about the Cybertruck for the past 4-5 years of anticipation. Love what Tesla engineers have done. The end product is not as great as the great parts and pieces you would expect...fairly small battery for a truck which results in not great road trip ability or towing range, god-awful visibility issues, and now with Rivian's refreshed R1s, lots of tech improvements and manufacturing improvements which maybe Sandy or Sue had a hand in? 380-420 mile range, new motors, etc...Rivian just took a very good truck and made it a great truck. So the excitement and promises of the Cybertruck have faded. I'll take a new Tri-Motor Rivian.

A great deal has been made about "The truck that won't rust" but using steel stampings to carry the stainless steel skin feels, to me, like saving up trouble for the future. I hope the E Coat they're using is as good as it gets, it would be a crying shame for the Cybertruck if it became renown for being a rotten egg: Strong shell but stinking inside!

@@peglor the Number of Cybertrucks getting wrapped shows some people are keen to prevent their Stainless Steel from contamination Rust. I’d be betting that there is likely some zinc in that coating on the mild steel pressings to protect it from Rust .

interesting rear fender, so much material and especially space. It appears Tesla needs more stiffness than is available from the rear casting. this almost like the exoskeleton Tesla wanted back then, but I guess thicker stainless steel is not worth the expense and additional weight.

Yes. They measure the dot positions with a 3D pointer device.

The recall comes a couple of weeks after Tesla delayed shipments of Cybertrucks to customers. Customers were told that the windshield wiper had an issue and that dealerships were awaiting parts to fix it before releasing the vehicles to their new owners. It was one of many delays the truck faced due to similar issues. Customers had been complaining about the windshield wiper blades not functioning before the recall. One user posted a video on X showing the wiper blades not working during a rainstorm. A member of the Cybertruck Owners Club forums also reported wiper blades not working within minutes of receiving delivery of a brand-new Cybertruck.

I'm not totally sure , bu the panel showing laser welds appears to be laser welded to the outer, stainless, panel. I am sure that Tesla had problems with weld "blemishes" on the stainless, visible panels - and they went to some lengths to eliminate these - maybe laser welding (very controllable) helps in this regard....

I want to know why the "vault" bed is so narrow ~4'. A regular pickup has 4' between the wheels and far wider everywhere else. Why couldn't Tesla do that? Was it the castings that took extra width, or is there something else going on? It would have been nice to have more volume in the Cybertruck bed

They take a "Pantograph ' (like an old dentist drill) The tip of the sensor and angles of the arms can measure the position in 3 dimensions. Touch the dots and a computer builds a 3D "Virtual" model (Same way you can shut your eyes and touch your nose)

Presumably, if someone dents the rear fender, this whole assembly has to be replaced as a unit. Bondo and paint isn’t going to do you any good at the body shop.

The skeleton makes the truck stiff and strong. The exoskeleton makes the outside tough and contributes to crash safety.

It does to the outside. The contribution to something like the stiffness of the vehicle would be minimal. You could probably drive it around "naked" just fine. But when it comes to the toughness of the vehicle surface in practical use, a truck where you can karate kick the door and it doesn't even scratch? Is that a structural value? Also consider side impact, having a thick strong skin to distribute the load initially and lead the forces to the strong points. I'd say that has some structural value. Maybe you eliminate the need for some steel beams that you usually find in doors for that purpose. I, for one, understood that as what was meant by "exoskeleton", but It would seem I am one of few.
