Munster 12 - New Zealand 0
This documentary tells the story of Munster's victory over the All Blacks in Thomond Park, Limerick. In the early winter of 1978, New Zealand were to record victories over Ireland, England Scotland and Wales and go on to win the Grand Slam. Prior to this though they had to play Munster and it was a day when pride was restored to Irish Rugby and an historic first achieved.
On this day the All Blacks suffered their first and only ever defeat to an Irish team and it was to be to Munster. This documentary sets the scene by recalling close encounters with the All Blacks in 1963 and in 1973. Players from both sides in those classic matches are interviewed including legends of the game like Tom Kiernan, Mick English, Moss Keane, B.G. Williams, many of whom went on to be involved in the 1978 game. Turning to the game itself, the All Blacks were tackled off the pitch. In the documentary New Zealand's famous golden boy, Stu Wilson tells how he "just wanted out of there" and the game plan is discussed by all the Munster players. "Their Finest Hour" concludes with the impact the result had on both Irish and New Zealand Rugby. It was exactly the kick start that Irish Rugby needed and all the New Zealand players credit that game as being the catalyst for their success in capturing that Grand Slam in 1978 for the first time in their history But victory on that great day in October 1978 belonged to Munster and it proved to be "Their Finest Hour".

One of the best sports documentaries I've seen. I particularly love when Andy Haden talks about the great Moss Keane and how Munster were having difficulties in the lineout. On a Munster ball the call comes "22-43-22" and Mossy said 'Ah fuck it, they're going to throw it to me again". Very funny! He was a real gentleman and character.

I was there with my father who unusually collected me from school that day. I was only 9, didn't even like rugby back then and have very few memories of the actual game but fantastic to look back now and stir the memories

The AB's have lost to a few northern hemisphere club sides while touring but still managed to win all their test matches. Back in those days the tours were long and they sometimes played a couple of club sides during the week between test matches on the weekends. Touring sides to NZ were regularly beaten by our provincial sides. In 93 the Lions lost to five provincial sides. England also lost against 5 provincial sides when touring NZ in 73 but ended beating NZ in the one off test.

Yeah but for a club to beat new Zealand it's a huge feat. I mean new Zealand is historically the best team. For munster to beat them it's incredible.

A long shot but I'm looking for footage of the 1963 Munster V All Blacks Game. There are a couple of clips in here. My Dad, Mick Carey, loose head for Munster then, turns 80 in September and it would be a wonderful surprise for him if there was anyway we could get it. Thank you.

+TheIrishMadMan I got Moss's Lansdowne jersey, when he played in Seattle in the early 70's. Helluva nice fella. I also had a mate who had Christy Cantillon's number 6 Munster jersey; the one he was wearing when he scored the only try of the match. He has since donated it to the IRFU. Cheers from Seattle

Hello, We took the Lansdowne boys to a local, Seattle pub on the Friday night and got them as drunk as we could do. Then, one of the bartenders, who was in the Seattle Opera Chorus, gave a fine version of “Danny Boy” and there was not a dry eye in the house. Then more drinks! Anything to give us an edge! It didn’t do any good. We were well and truly beaten. We did take them on a tour of the University of Washington football practice where they were all in shock at the size of American college football players. Of course, they had on their pads, their cleats and their helmets! It was a wonderful weekend. Kind Rgds, ‘ Robert Simpson ex-Seattle RFC

During the 2011 RWC the Irish would have felt like they were playing in front of a home crowd because of all the support from the local NZers. Many NZers are of Irish decent.

Great day for Munster and Irish rugby. Munster seemed to always give the touring All Blacks sides a torrid time over the years. 3-3 draw in 1973 and I think the 1953 and 63 teams won only by margins of 6-3 and 6-0.
