This is the only Muppet movie in which the Muppets themselves aren't singing the songs. And Pepé is a recent addition from - I think - Muppets Tonight, while Clifford (originally performed by Kevin Clash (same guy who did Elmo on Sesame Street)) was first introduced in The Jim Henson Hour, which was a TV bomb. As for Edgar, he's played by Jeffery Tambor, probably better known for being the Mayor of Whoville in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the live-action movie, not the animated special or the Illumination film). And that grizzly bear Muppet? His name's Bobo. Also, 26:02 - Those two actors are from the show Dawson's Creek.

Here's what co-writer Joey Mazzarino said: "I wrote a very parody-heavy script. We parodied Men in Black, Contact, Alien, and we were very close to shooting. Then I got a panicked call from Henson saying that they were firing Randal. They said, "We don’t feel like he’s bringing enough vision." I said, "But we got the green light! We’re going!" So they flew me out to LA to pick a new director, and we picked a director who was a very nice guy, and he did a decent job, but he wanted to get rid of all the parody stuff. He wanted it to be more real, and the ending, I hate the ending. In my draft, the aliens were getting the signal of old Muppet Shows, and they made themselves look like Gonzo because he was the ultimate being to him. And then they peel back to reveal themselves to be these hideous creatures. And it’s not about family being those guys, his family is the Muppets. So he’s still a whatever, he’s not an alien in the end. So the fact that they made him an alien bugs the crap out of me. Anyway, they hired him, he wanted to make all these changes, and I just left." Dav Goelz, as Gonzo, would later say that the whole story was "just a movie". He's no longer an alien.

I’m thrilled you finally know Gonzo’s origin story! 👍 I remember seeing this one in the theaters and being happy to know his background too. And every time you asked what he was while watching the previous movies I refrained from spoiling this one lol 😂

Pepe is one of my favorites. The little prawn face and his accent. There was a Muppet Show reboot they tried, making it a tv show, but it didn't last. That's where a few of the newer Muppets came from. I think Ashliegh would enjoy The Muppet Show series....and Fraggle Rock.

The gang of Classic Muppets are all from "The Muppet Show" which ran from 1976 - 1981. Several of the characters had existed before that show, such as Kermit, and others, in various forms. But when The Muppet Show came together and ran for all those years, that core team of characters became a troupe, an ensemble. All the movies featured those "actors" as versions of themselves having adventures like "Muppet Caper" or "..Manhattan", or playing characters in classic stories like "Christmas Carol" or "Treasure Island." In 1996, they launched a new TV show with the Muppets cast, called "Muppets Tonight," which lasted two seasons. This brought back most of the core characters from the original Muppet Show, and also introduced several new characters, such as Pepe the King Prawn, Clifford (the pink dude with the dreads), Johnny Fiama (the green Italian guy), Bobo The Bear (the life-size bear who was assisting the government alien-obsessed guy). Many of these new characters from "Muppets Tonight" then went on to appear in Muppet movies, such as this one. Pepe has proven extremely popular.

Muppets from space was the last Muppet movie to be released in the theater until the Muppets. There has been several straight to DVD and one made for TV movie. I strongly suggest the following two. A very merry Muppet Christmas. This try to repair the damage from Muppets from Space by referring to Gonzo as a "whatever" again. And then there's Muppet's Wizard of Oz which puts a new twist on the story of the Wizard of Oz.

You know what, keep singing! You're a good singer! When you're ready... there is still The Muppets from 2011, and Muppets Most Wanted 2014. Both hit theaters with a splash, and brought them out of retirement so to speak because this movie didn't do so well... and it felt like people had forgot about them. Did you know that they used to have a Muppet Show from '76 - '81 with regular guest stars? They tried to bring it back later but again, not many of their projects worked out after this until the 2011 movie.

This definitely paid off because you kept asking "what is Gonzo?" in every movie. Well, now you know! And there's still more Muppet movies you can check out later on. "The Muppets" and "Muppets Most Wanted" will have a lot of people you'll recognize. I totally forgot that "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan was in this. That was such a brief moment in late 90s wrestling when Hogan turned heel, I can't believe they put it in a movie. He even name checked the nWo, lol.

I am SO HAPPY that you watched this one! I see so few reviews of it, and everyone that does rips it apart. I loved this one as a kid, even if I only saw it once or twice. I related a lot to Gonzo in this, and it’s soundtrack is indeed fun, so I’m really happy you enjoyed it so much. I hope you’ll be able to dabble a bit into more Muppet content soon. Looking forward to Hallo-Beans… I mean, I hate scary movies but reactions make them a bit easier to digest conceptually.

It's DEFINITELY an elder millennial thing. I was born in 91 and even I didn't get the reference when I first watched this movie as a kid. It wasn't until I got a little bit older. And even then, I've still never actually watched Dawson's Creek. I just know what it is.

Andie McDowell usually played the love interest in 90s comedies. Especially ones with a supernatural or sci-fi element to it - like "Groundhog Day," "Multiplicity," or "Michael". It's an odd typecast, but she always delivers.

SO - Pepe and the Muppet with dreads: in the 70s, there was a SNL-type tv program called The Muppet Show (which came before their 1st movie). In the 90s, they had another tv show (similar to the one in the 70s) called Muppets Tonight. Dreads guy was the host and Pepe was just a hilarious addition to the group - so that's why they're in this movie. Pepe stayed in future movies/shows. I still quote a joke he told: "What do you call it when you mix an elephant and a rhino? Elephino (hell if i know)!"
