I would also add that battle rappers think being "corporate" or "mainstream" automatically takes away street cred. The ability to say I'm in the mud struggling, fighting and proving the dog in themselves seems impossible if you making millions and don't gotta "trap" anymore. Its almost like your street life never happened and what you say will be under more scrutiny like you're lying.

They also had Royce Da 5'9, King Crooked, Joel Ortiz, and Joe Budden involved in judging the battles! They got a damn TV show produced by the most popular rapper who made battle rap a world wide phenomenon with the movie 8Mile, on top of having the most lyrical group of Emcee's judging each match! It was a win win in every aspect because in the end every person that rapped on the show would gain mainstream appeal and get paid and the winners would be paid serious money and be set up to pursue their careers without the burden of being stressed and starving through the beginning.

I got really into Battle rap a few years ago, and the entire reason I did was a guy on KZbin who was talking about the battles, the match ups, the culture, drama etc and that got me into it, then he got absolutely dissed by the entire community and looked down upon to the point of him not wanting to do it anymore, then I lost interest in it. They really don't help themselves by wanting to stay niche. The same thing happened with skateboarding years ago and now look, they opened up and the sport is massive now.
@VENGEFULHEXX

Skateboarding is definitely different. The culture itself is a counter culture so making it commercial just opens it up to being exploited which is what has happened. You gotta ride for Nike and monster/red bull now to make a living while they pulled a Walmart and killed a bunch of other smaller core companies in the process because they can bank roll their way in. That's literally what happened. Battle rap has a different culture so it's not quite the same.

@@VENGEFULHEXX I get what you're saying, but I've been skating myself for year's and personally I like how open and accepting it is now, the gate keeping within the culture was holding the popularity and money making opportunities back in the 2000's and 2010's, now you got small companies, big companies, Social media, and endless way's to earn a living from skating, plus they still have a core group who are die hard skater's, influences, child friendly, the level's have gone up big ti,e and the entire culture has grown into an industry. I hope Battle rap can learn from this and make the most of their talent like skaters did, rather than stay in the basement pretending to be to cool for anybody else outside the core group of die hard's.

@@xn-triq7607 you're talking about a different kind of gate keeping and I promise you back in the early 00s there was much more diversity than the example you're trying to use now. It’s almost like a microcosm of hip hop in general back when it first started. Purists and the like wanted no outsiders, they didn’t want it going main stream and getting infiltrated by pop and that’s exactly what starting happening, with the “rapping Rodney” Rodney danger field album and everything. It went from street to “everyone and they grandma into rap now”.

I'm a local producer and rapper/writer. To do an interview, I mainly freestyle my conversation with rhymes and quotes. See its hard to convert when you are constantly studying one thing. Battle rappers do not practice song writing and that's their weakest link. Can't make a song. Em makes songs out of battle raps. All his lyrics are based off battle but put in a life situation. His strong point. Stan, was my first love when I heard it. The way Em told that story it was in battle mode but conscious reality of a truth. Something like " The Fan " with Wesley and Deniro. Similar story plot.

I dont think eminem wants to be associated with battle rap in the way that they speak of regardless of whether he was "scared away" (which i think is bs) he battled to get on.. once he became a hugely successful rapper i dont think he ever wanted to regain or reclaim any titles from battle rap or to neccessarily play a big part in it or be the face of it.. he definitely gets his flowers from me for being apart of battle rap history but i would be lying if i said i have missed him bringing some type of commercialized programming etc to the art form

Well said queen, my thought exactly, and its definitely not easy balancing battle rap and making music especially when signed to a label and/ or while being a main-stream artist. At that point you gotta decide which industry serves you better. Red pill or blue pill, which world is more important to you.

Em came from a different era too. In the Scribble Jam days who had to freestyle your raps. Nowadays mfs write, pre- rehearse, and perfect their verses before they even stand across their opponent and only have to come up with a slick freestyled rebuttal here and there. In the past you had to come up with all your lines and rebuttals in the moment and maybe a few of them were memorized. Guys like Supernatural, MC Juice, and Eminem freestyle battled and did it more for respect and guys like Murda Mook, Dizaster, and Loaded Lux write their shit and put on better live performances because there is money on the line. I like both styles, but they cant do what Em used to do and Em can't do what these guys do IMO.
