That emergency services operator’s attitude was disgusting. If you can’t show a bit of compassion to someone who’s obviously in great distress and has told you they think someone’s murdered their brother’s family then you shouldn’t be in the job. She’s told you where to go, the distress in her voice tells you she’s found something, to keep on like that with no care at all towards that person …

I disagree with you. He needs to know if there are bodies and also whether the perpetrators are in the house. They cannot risk the lives of first responders, they cannot be led to a house with a gunman inside for example. I think the operator was professional and asked the required question. The woman was not answering clear, easy, yes/no questions, repeatedly.

Her English is clearly not perfect. I could only imagine if this was happening in French, which I can speak but I'm not fluent in. I would just be in shock, unable to come up with the words, unable to process what was happening. It's hard enough to make a phone call like that, let alone not in your first language! Him yelling at her was not helping the situation at all, only making her more upset.

i immediately went to the comments to see if i was the only one who thought he was being vile. glad i wasn't alone. she's not only panicking, but is trying to communicate in what is likely her second language. the fact that he got mad at her was horrifying. he could've just asked her to breathe, comforted her, told her to make sure she was safe, spoken to her more slowly. i hope he lost his job.

I was just about to say the same thing. I hope he was fired after the recording came out, he can tell she is clearly upset and that English is not her first language. Most people would have a hard time speaking calm and clearly in their first language after finding their dead relatives in a gory scene like that, much less in their second language. She said it was her brother, where is the compassion, telling her to stop shouting and answer his questions when she's saying she thinks her brother is dead/dying.

I know operators are trying to get much information quickly as possible. But they need to keep in mind callers are absolutely distraught especially if the victim(s) is/are a known/close person. Maybe some sort of reassurance to the caller from the operator would've been more constructive. Something like, "I know this is a devasting discovery. But I need your help with some information so we can get you the help you need. Can you help me?" Tonal control is also important.

I still think about this case often. It hits too close to home. I lived in the house right next door to the Lin family. The Lin's were in 55a and I was in 55, however, my Mum and I moved out about 2 years prior. I would always play with Henry and Terry, particularly Henry from what I can remember. We could run up and down the driveway most mornings and water the plants. The Lin's were a wonderful family and I have fond memories of them. They always welcomed me with open arms and showed me love. I still think of Brenda to this day. It is heartbreaking and unimaginable what she has endured. I send her all of my love and light. I know she would be doing her family proud.

My Aunt's place was just around the corner from their house, & I know the area well as I was born in North Epping & lived most of my life in the neighbouring suburb of Eastwood, so I knew many who were really shocked at the brutal killings. While I was aware that Robert had been found guilty because of all the forensic evidence, the media just gave the motive as jealousy of his brother's hard-earned success. However, aside from coveting all that Min & Lily had worked extremely hard for, I'm not at all surprised to learn from this video that also included his incestuous desire for their daughter Brenda!

That triple zero operator frustrated the living hell out of me! Yeah sure....I get it ..it must be frustrating and a little annoying to trying to get information out of ANYBODY never mind with language barriers. This operator had zero empathy in his voice and if he sent an ambulance why does he need to hound her for information when clearly she is is absolute shock. Which I'm sure those attending the crime scene to help would be in shock soon also as the scene sounds horrific. I know these operators have to gather information and don't want to send out ambulances to trivial matters.....I just was getting so worked up listening to that operators unempathetic attitude.
@ZimtPorridge
@ZimtPorridge 3 жыл бұрын
The ambulance needs to know how many people there are and in what condition they are or what injuries there are so they can prepare accordingly. Not having this information can cost lives. @@ZimtPorridge Bingo. My husband does this as part of his job and as difficult as it is to listen to, they must get as much information as possible so that they can work on saving lives ASAP once they're on the scene. I think it would have helped if she was told that her information could save the lives of those who still had hope of being saved once they arrived. There's definitely (unfortunately) going to be situations where people call up and cannot identify the victims due to the level of injury - some crime scenes the victims can only be identified by dental records or dna or very small fragments of what was an entire person. One of the hardest things about this was having to do the interviews with a translator though that translates was very good but it turns out that they both can speak very well. It's very Chinese English but they know what they are doing and most people in this situation exploit this same language barrier. Anyone with any knowledge of linguistics and sintax can see they are hiding behind the language barrier. See them at the press conference they look like America's FBI most wanted And watch his breathing he is in a state of extreme fight or flight because the police made them do that and they did not want to and he is having a nervous breakdown but he can understand what is spoken to him in English.

The derisive manner of the emergency operator is appalling. Hopefully, he’s working somewhere in a capacity that doesn’t require him to speak with other people, and especially not those in desperate need of emergent help.

They are trained to get information. She was not giving him any information. She was hysterical. Emergency services were on their way. How can he help her without the information?

@@peaceangel-rl2hf I’ve seen a lot of true crime “calls” and there is a better way to take information. For example you talk to the caller in a calm voice , tell her she needs to calm down we’re gonna be there, take a deep breath, it’s going to be alright. His tone of speaking has already spiked up Kathy’s anxiety and terror and he fueled it up by just being rude. And trust me I’m not saying this out of nowhere I’ve seen other operators handle such situations more professionally. And yes, other operators did get info out of it. This one was just a douche bag. The way he said her “don’t tell us to come quick” does he not know anyone in her situation would obviously want help to arrive asap?!? What an unprofessional prick.

I feel bad for the operator.. Not knowing Cantonese, trying to understand, keep the person talking.. People DO NOT GET dispatchers are TRAINED to be this way, flat, calm, cool, listen.. If they don't, suicide rate amongst this group is HIGH!! People leave the most UNEDUCATED posts which shows their lack of empathy..

As a Chinese-Australian myself, I deeply resonated with this case--especially with Brenda. I'm just 2 years younger than Brenda and was 13 at the time this happened. I wish I could've been there for her, even if I don't know her. It sucks knowing she was SA'd by that disgusting man, and I hope he's getting what he deserves in prison!
