I'm gonna watch the video itself later, but I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate this series. Music criticism on KZbin is so damn hollow when the person talking about the specific song/album/artist doesn't play the parts they're talking about (probably cause of copyright bs), so it really is very refreshing to watch your series. Not to mention that the jokes you make are also very good and you complement them very well with your editing. I'm not a regular on your channel, but I'd really like to see this series expand to other artists too. Well done MIke

This song is a tribute to Lemmy, which is hilarious because 90% of Motorhead's songs have driving riffs, well-written catchy choruses, and well-played solos. This song is basically pissing on Lemmy's grave but these dudes were too old to understand that

It’s always been weird to me because I bought the demo version of Lords of Summer when they released it on iTunes a few years before Hardwired came out, and that demo had a lot of promise… but then the album came out and it’s almost like the entire album was finished, and then taken and ran through a purifier (pun not intended), or just almost over-produced and cleaned up to the point of dullness. Edit: the writing doesn’t help, but the writing has been talked about more. It’s not badly produced, just… glossy and “stock”?

Honestly I liked Murder One because it gave me their take on a Motörhead vibe. As a tribute song to Lemmy I respect it. It was better than a RIP in my opinion. Lemmy once said his bass was the thunder in everyone’s gut. James said Still hear your thunder, feeding back. Which I thought was one more detail to Lenny’s life they included without people noticing. If you didn’t know, this song is about lemmy’s whole life so yes the lyrics may be weak in places but if you think about how they relate to Motörhead then you see how thought out they truly are.

@@Ryan_Thompson_GuitaristI respectfully disagree. That Saxon song sounds “happy”, like you are celebrating what Lemmy has done on this Earth. Murder One sounds dark, like you are mourning that Lemmy has passed to a higher generation. Dark > Happy when writing a tribute to a dead musician. Maybe Metallica should have combined both: like Whiplash with a Master of Puppets type interlude in the middle.

I think they tries to get bck their AJFA tone. Basically the last album that was the Metallica most people complain about they're not anymore, ignoring that tonewise they already leaned towards what would become the ST the appeasing songwriting just wasn't there yet. Now they can't got back to the thrashy songwriting anymore. Even when they found their late 80s tone they still reverted back to their AOR polished songwriting. This album is the "We built this city" of metal.

Hey Mike, I noticed that even if we talk about virtuous players, like Petrucci, Vai, etc, metal bands make a LOT more mistakes live than classical musicians in orchestras. Why do you think this happens?
@whosaidthat84
@whosaidthat84 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. My guess, as a very basic "musician," would be that they get more into the idea of performing for the crowd rather than performing for the song. Or in some cases, their hearts aren't as invested in live shows as they used to be.
@lexievv

@lexievv
@lexievv 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgeantonioandrei8570 I meant that the audience is not expecting perfection (like on the album) and actually appreciates some changes or mistakes here and there. I guess another way to say it is that the audience usually goes to a metal band with different expectations and intentions as opposed to the audience of an orchestra where it's usually about playing a piece as accurately as possible. Both are really awesome in their own way. But I guess orchestras are expected to play the sheet music perfectly. Hope that cleared it up a bit :)
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 2 жыл бұрын
Well, an orchestra has like 70 musicians, so one musician making a mistake doesn't really stand out much. What Steve Vai and John Petrucci do would be more comparable to classical soloists, not orchestra musicians. But even then, it's different, since a part of their performance is still the stage show, whereas in classical concerts, the main focus is in the music. Also, not everything they play is 100% planned - their solos often contain some improvisation, whereas classical musicians play everything note for note. Sure, some people may improvise a cadenza, but still, most of it is 100% planned.

What do you value more in a band: the ability to write a memorable song even if the musicianship is lacking or technical proficiency that is a little more forgettable? Since you like bands like the Beatles for example (who are more than the sim of their parts, but not necessarily great players) and dream theater (on the other end, sometimes foregoing any hooks in the name of technique) I’m curious what you think. Metallica’s whole career is kind of a balance of both with various highs and lows 😅

That reaction to Kirk's solo was everything 🤣. That was fucking wretched. I can't think of a more emblematic solo of Kirk's modern folly; sloppy, uncreative, and passion-less. There was like no actual phrasing there 😖
@MidnightInferno04
@MidnightInferno04 2 жыл бұрын
Apparently the idea of that solo was to resemble the sound of a slot machine at the beginning.
@SefniAsheforr
@SefniAsheforr 2 жыл бұрын
@@MidnightInferno04 Sounded more like a piece of shit car failing to start underwater. And even then, it's all about execution. Symphony of Destruction's main riff was based on basketball bounces outside the studio, and that became their most popular song. Kirk apparently doesn't have the chops or creativity to make his idea work. It sounded dreadful.
@cleetusmcdonald6574
@cleetusmcdonald6574 2 жыл бұрын
The solo is supposed to sound like a gambling machine like when you win, because the song is about lemmy and lemmy did a lot of that. I know kinda obvious but a lot of people actually didn't know that's why I am pointing it out. It makes the solo sound a lot better when you listen to it with that idea in mind lol

I can't listen to the second half of this album (other than Spit Out the Bone) because all I hear is drum fills on the SNARE! It's like his drum set is just cymbals, high hat, bass drum and like 5 snares. It...just...never...ends.

"I'm so incredibly bored" That is honestly the only response you could have to HWTSD I think. I personally like the first maybe six songs, but everything following those six up until Spit Out The Bone is just such a long, boring, repetitive and uneventful drag.

The song from Hardwired I dislike the most is definitely Now That We're Dead, the intro with that weird thing Lars is doing on the Toms is really distracting and annoying and the song just feels way too long.

So far, I actually agree with every single pick, except for 2×4 (I think 3 other songs on Load are considerably worse, that one is just okay). I was shocked to see ManUNkind instead of Murder One but now that both of them are being included, it's perfect; both of them suck ass but Murder One sucks a little more, lmao.

@@BecomeTheKnight excellent question, for me I can sit and listen a think oh well that’s an E followed be a G followed by a whatever but that for me is the mechanics of how the song works not how it makes me feel. For example I know how the engine in bike works but that goes no where close to explaining the way I feel when I’m doing 70 down the motorway.. completely different example I know but I think it makes my point.

Murder One was a major letdown, especially being the Lemmy tribute track. It lack EVERYTHING it should be. Its Slow, without Rhyme or Rythmn and Lacks any vocal punchline. The forcefull inclusions of motorhead lyrical snippets just make it even worse. I could probably write something that embodies Lemmy more then this.

I'm okay with some of the music parts in the song. But the lyrics and vocals always make it difficult to listen to this song. Though the music should've been faster and the bass should have been more prominent since it's a tribute to Lemmy. They should've done something different as a tribute.
