Murdered inmate's mother Deb Abrams speaks about the death of her son Adam Kargus - The Fifth Estate

In 2013, Deb Abrams' son, Adam Kargus, was beaten to death by his cellmate inside the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC). Abrams speaks with the Fifth Estate about her son's horrible murder and how she hopes the correctional system can change so this doesn't happen to another inmate.

Imagine standing around whilst listening to someone’s life being taken for a whole 20 minutes! It takes a special kind of evil to stand by and watch/listen to that happen! Those prison guards are as culpable as the man who beat him to death and should have been given life sentences.

I can’t imagine the burden of knowing your son was murdered while in the custody of the state. And then to find out that negligent guards were involved and likely were aware of the assault and could’ve prevented the murder.I can’t imagine this happening to my mother and her having to go on carrying this burden. They need to do the right thing and hold everyone accountable who failed this young man and his mother. I wish I could hug her because she reminds me of my own mother.

Drug addiction is an epidemic all over the world, I'm in recovery myself. Adam did not deserve a death sentence for his petty crime, it sounds like he was truly ready to change his life. I'm so glad that the media in Canada held the prison accountable allowing This Mama's son to be murdered

Mrs. Abrams, I am so very sorry for your loss. As parents, we are not supposed to outlive our children. Thank you for sharing your son's story with everyone. If it helps ONE person, it was not shared in vain. Your son did not deserve to die the way that he did. May his soul rest in peace now. God bless you!!

having worked in our regional secure custody, all I can ask is why is this not incoporated into mandatory training at the Provincial level?!!!!! All levels would only benefit......and 11B for those guards? For shame! Our government should be sooooo ashamed, and more Judges who look down on addicts and punish them, despite woefully insufficient rehabilitation services for the majority less than rich population, should know those actions are draconian, and if humiliation or a feeling of superiority are the framework behind decisions like the judge used sentencing Adam- as a society, we can fear what happens behind locked jailcells nearly as much as on the otherside of the facility
