King Louis XIV ruled over France for 72 years (he even beat Queen Elizabeth II for longest reign in history). He is famous for constructing Versailles, one of the most magnificent palaces ever built.

What did the illustrious Sun King really look like?
Narration & Art: Becca Segovia

Louis was not difficult to bring to life, given just how much he loved his own image. There are hundreds of portraits of Louis that were created during his long life, basically from birth, and all the way to old age.
Now, obviously these paintings are propaganda - meant to show the strength of Louis’ Absolute Rule over France. But surprisingly, they show his features quite consistently throughout his life. We see the same arching brows. A thin, hooked nose, and cleft chin in every depiction.
Louis was a king famous for his sense of fashion, and most notably - his hair. In fact, his hair was kind of “his thing.” Louis actually began balding in his early twenties, and he was already wearing partial hair extensions in this portrait. He transitioned to full wigs later on in life, and even set the trend for them. He is actually the reason we see American founding fathers wearing wigs even almost a century later.
You can see the evolution in portraits, as his lifestyle got even more grand, and his power even more absolute. His early portraits look regal but simple, and move into extravagance as he gets older.
The famous work by Hyacinthe Rigaud is one of the most famous portraits of the Sun King, showing unnaturally young legs, a huge wig, and a completely lustrous environment. But again, it’s interesting that Louis didn’t seem as concerned with touching up his face or looking more handsome in these images - he was just concerned with the impression of power that they gave. Louis originally commissioned this portrait as a gift for his grandson, but ended up loving it so much he kept it for himself, which I actually find hilarious.
The reason we know this image is fairly accurate to how Louis really looked, is it matches this honestly unsettling waxwork made by Antoine Benoist. Benoist created a gallery of Waxworks long before the time of Madame Taussaud, who made the famous death mask of Marie Antoinette I worked from.
Waxworks became really popular in France because of their accuracy, and people would travel from all over to see the true face of the King. The work impressed Louis, who gave Benoist the title of Premiere Sculpteur.
Since his reign was so long, I’ve re-created Louis around the age of 24, referencing the portrait by Charles Le Brun from around 1661, as well as at the age of 63, referencing the famous portrait by Hyacinthe Riguad painted around 1700.

My girlfriend just asked me why I was watching this channel, and in English (we are German). I explained to her that I really appreciated the access to history, being able to get to know an entire era and many of its side aspects through a biography. And then the facial reconstruction! It's always scary to me how close we get to people when they suddenly smile directly at you, even though they've been dead for centuries. Great job!

Why is the king of France not driving through France in the center, without numbers, in his unique car, with a flag and coat of arms on the roof, the doors open backwards. And the president of France rides sideways, with plates, in a casually ordinary car. And why, in general, no one is so greeted by France as the king of France?) everything is blocked thousands of soldiers, hundreds of horses, 10 guards, etc.

At the time of Louis the XIV only men did ballet. The reason he is showing his legs is to show that he was a dancer of ballet. The fifth position in ballet shows strength. This is fact that most people don't know :)

Please don't forget that King Louis XIV was the most charming, artful womanizer ever walked on the Champs-Élysées! He seduced many women throughout Europe using his charms and charisma without revealing his royal status or his wealth.. a true seducer w a great sense of humor, sense of fashion, his charisma level was out of this world, he was very articulate and had excellent verbal dexterity, he had an eye for brilliance and magnificence, he became an elite dancer at age 14 w hundreds of live performances in front of massive audience since he was dancing and performing at the highest level since age 4. When he established the first dance academy in Europe in 1661, he also established the music academy shortly after because of his love for music and arts, he hired and fired the most talented architects in the world to design his palace of Versailles until he got it made exactly with the splendor, opulence and perfection he wanted. He loved women of all sizes, shapes and colors. He loved them not only for sex, but also for their companionship, conversation and point of views on different topics. Overall he was fascinated by female intellect, presence and female energy in every facet of his glorious life. His mistresses often described being constantly infatuated and magnetized by him way before knowing he was the most powerful man/king in Europe. He was THE true French lover in Chief!!👑💌

Liked how u explained everything & kept it interesting w/o going too far into details & putting me to sleep. This piece actually sparked a couple of interesting topics that I'd like to further research. The cherry on top was definitely the models of King Louis. I thought they were spot on! I look forward to watching more videos.

I'm always excited for a new video. Your voice is inviting and pleasant as you tell the history of each person you choose. I makes the reveal of the person that much more enjoyable. 😊

This is incredibly timely!!! Thank you. I’m recently went to Versailles and am currently reading Love and Louis XIV….been thinking a lot about him and this period of French history lately and am absolutely enamored. I yearn to be a fly on the wall and to witness these extraordinary people in real time. To see their faces is so incredibly satisfying!

I used to work in Versailles palace when I was a student and the wax portrait is surprising. It also has real hair (not the King’s but real hair anyway) at one point in time it was possible to see the portrait in a room in Versailles, I think is not there anymore but I’m not sure. In any case, is a nice video. Well explained.

Stunning! I am really grateful that you preserve the account of the history along with creating such breathtaking and accurate recreations of the images of historical figures. I love that you included a rendering of "modern day Louis XIV."

Louis XIV was known as an absolute stud during his lifetime. The Sun Kings natural hair color was brownish gold, he started to adopt the thick black curls as a wig later on as a fashion statement. According to first hand descriptions, Louis had sensuous lips and these beautiful muscular legs which he was very proud of and loved to show off in tight stockings. No wonder he was so successful with women, not only was he the most powerful absolute monarch in history but a very handsome man.

I've just begun my own little study of his reign, and seeing him brought to life before my eyes gave me goosebumps, and the motivation to continue my work. Ths was incredible. And like many have commented before me, he was an incredibly good looking young man.

This video was wonderful and fascinating! I know very little about King Louis, and must admit I'll have to review the second part again. Those family trees for me are an entanglement and the War of the Spanish Succession is confusing. But that's what's great about video, you can watch it many times over. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
