Actually, during a discussion between volumes 6-7, they said that Iron Wood has a semblance called Mettel. Where it, "strengthens his resolve which allows him to carry through with his decisions, helping him hyper-focus." And it's always active like Qrows semblance. So if he has a plan in motion, his semblance will make him focus on that one goal.

I love that detail. Ever since Volume 4, I've been so so SO happy that they actually go to lengths to consider her cat ears when animating her. Not only do they have her cat ears move to signify emotion, they also have them perk up when something catches her attention, and they've even had her twist one ear toward a sound, like in her V5 character short and when she heard Yang's motorcycle approaching when she faced Adam.

Ironwood's Semblance is the biggest factor of all of this. Mettle: Strengthens his resolve and keep him on the path he thinks is right. But it also means he can't easily change or adapt outside of his plan/view. Right now he's focused on saving Atlas and ONLY Atlas, that's how he can so easily make these Ultimatums.

@@arch_2076 well that just begs the question of what the difference is between the best course of action and the right course of action. Ironwood has chosen the best course in which (should his plan succeed) Atlas will definitely survive whereas team RWBY and co. have decided to do the (morally) right course in which they try and save everyone but risk not saving anyone. I think both sides have their merits. One thing I don't understand is why people have complained about Ironwood in this episode going full dictator. This is exactly what he did last season and he was praised for it by the sceptics among the RWBY community (by that I mean people who question Ruby being a good protag. and stuff). In his plan to save Atlas using the relic, Mantle being destroyed was something he knew would happen and was okay with that. It is not that big of a leap to assume he would actually destroy Mantle himself in order to ensure Atlas can be saved; that was the exchange he was willing to make in the first place. As an observer and an audience member, I know which choice is correct. Yes, objectively, Ironwood's plan to save as many people as he thinks is possible makes sense, but with our outside knowledge, it should be pretty obvious which choice should be made. Salem said herself "If Ironwood calls for help from Vacuo all is lost". If Salem's strategy is to divide then the way to beat her is to be united (Remnant) in facing her. That's why Ruby's plan with Amity made the most sense this Vol. and why I simply can't agree with Ironwood's decision is. However, him taking a measure such as that is simply not surprising in the slightest.

It's important to remember in the context of things; Ironwood's semblance passively encourages his spiraling behavior and he's incapable of stopping it. Mettle will always give him the willpower and self-assurance to keep him from the kind of second-guessing one would normally be led to in this kind of situation, so to some extent? Ironwood isn't doing this out of pure maniacal evil but thanks to a mental condition he cannot control.

He didn't bother to fix the wall, allowing Grimm to come and go as they please, with but a token handful of useless guards and drones to do little. No wonder Robyn and her gang had to rise up. Ironwood couldn't be bothered; to him, they were his meatshield. "Help me, and Mantle will be left to fend for itself." "Except, that's always been the case. The difference now is that you are willing to go full Salem and wipe out an entire city out of pettiness. Now we know why there were extra chairs in Salem's room. Gotta make room for new puppets.

I mean to be fair, there is literally nothing/nobody important in Mantle. Every major character this arc is on Atlas, heading to Vacuo, or trapped on the Comms Tower. The Relics stayed on Atlas the whole time, the military is on Atlas, the Technology was on Atlas, Salem's entire target was Atlas. He had tunnel vision but there was no priority to securing Mantle other than the population. But nobody else even tried to act like this was the case.

Oscar specifically says its kinetic energy, not god magic, people and the landscape were effected by the blast and y'know, people in Remnant have this thing called aura? which gives them supernatural durability? Sure Hazel didn't survive the blast but he was in the dead center of it. Explosions lose more power the further it spreads, but since they were still in the crater where it happened, that's still a considerable amount of force

As much as i don't agree with his methods, Ironwood is right. Team RWBY's goal is to protect the people. With the people of Mantle dead, their next objective would without a doubt be to protect Atlas. Regardless of Ironwood being deserving of their help or not. The lives of the people always comes first. If team RWBY decide to not help Atlas when (and if) Mantle is destroyed, that would be bad writing.

I think that's part of the reason so many people are upset about this plan- it's not just evil, it's DUMB, and can fall apart so easily from so many different factors that the only reasons for Ironwood to think it's a good plan is either that his semblance is effectively mind-controlling him, that he's so exhausted that he's probably getting vivid hallucinations and thus incapable of rational problem-solving, or that the writers needed their big moment of "Ironwood is irredeemably evil now" and didn't particularly care if it made sense. Personally, I would have had him make the broadcast to Mantle itself, and instead of threatening them with a bomb, he declared that RWBY and the rest of the main characters were complicit in the grimm attack, and that if they turned themselves in- or were turned in- then the evacuations could continue. It still makes him a villain, it creates the drama of the people they're protecting potentially turning against them, and most importantly it MAKES SENSE.

There's three major problems with this. 1. Fake Penny can't open the vault. 2. Emerald hasn't interacted enough with Penny to convincingly fake her speech patterns. 3. Jaune is OOM right now.

Jaune was shown to have a fast recovery time back in Volume 7 but I don't know if it's fast enough for the hour Ironwood has given them (esp. since no one has slept for at least 24 hours now). So I also agree that your 3rd point is a problem.

I’m kind of over everyone putting so much of Ironwood’s decision on his semblance. He hasn’t cared about what’s happened to Mantle since at least the beginning of the volume, if not the last few chapters of 7. He’s been taking very obvious military dictator steps for a while now.

I wouldn't say he didn't care at the beginning but believing what he was doing what was needed for the greater good caused Mantle to suffer like it did. Although I agree with his deterioration being too fast.

His semblance is making him go further and further down this really bad road. It's basically forcing him to only think of one answer and not listen to others and the more the situation gets worse the stronger his semblance will affect his judgment. One option would be, and he did this, move mantle to Atlas and then go up. Not a great plan either but it's better then just kill them. Because the situation of them working together was looking better so his Semblance was letting up, but as he saw people betray him and Salem's threat that's when he went on only save Atlas.

I think that they might use Emerald to make people see penny and just hid penny somewhere else, like they can take the fake penny to the vault convince watts and cinder and Ironwood that that’s her and act like emerald is still on the bad side but then switches up when Qrow, Ozpin, Real penny, RWBY, JNP, and Robin show up, then again we don’t know when Salam is going to be back but idk 🤷🏽‍♀️ .

Love the genuine reactions and the amount of commentary cause honestly it is needed at times with these tense episodes really shattering everyone and given the amount of episodes left, yeah, a distraction or perception is always appreciated. However so few are reacting to that moment with Blake and Yang which is like long overdue given their time apart. But yeah it was the best saved for last as these two have been through so much. Honestly one of the best moments in that episode for me and here is hoping for more of that going forward. Keep up the great content.

So, this whole episode was a bombing run. Oscar nuked the whale with magic, Watts nuked Cinder in the feels and Ironwood is threatening to nuke (because if he only has one then it's got to be that strong) Mantle into nothingness. Things are shaping up to go down in the next few episodes. I have a feeling the adults will be the ones to off Ironwood if that bridge needs to be crossed. Either by Qrow or by Robin while the kids deal with Cinder, Watts and bugged out Penny. Emerald will have to come to a decision once she encounters Cinder again. Speaking off which, Cinder got roasted so bad she needed to take a seat. I wonder how she'll take it moving forward.

His Semblance is making him incredibly stubborn and given him tunnel vision. He's also being idiotic. So, it's either leave Mantle to die or watch it die? If Mantle's going to die either way, then the smart thing to do is run away. Mantle's doomed either way. It's not going to happen because of who RWBYORNJ are, but it's the smart thing. The route that best fits what Ruby will do is military coup. I don't believe Ruby would have Ironwood killed, that's not who she is. However, she would definitely see him deposed, considering he's batshit fucking insane. And she'd have Marrow, Winter, and a bunch of other sympathetic soldiers at her back

But Cinder beat the shit out of Penny and Winter when she was trying to take Fria's power. It was Ruby's very convenient Silver Eyes who chased her away. Cinder beat Phyrra, Jaune, Winter, Ozpin and her hunter teacher so far. Raven defeated her after Videl's interference and the only real clean defeat Cinder had was against Penny at Amity. She's has a good win/lose streak... But she's extremely unlucky...
