This video is filmed at the Ähtäri airport in Finland where a Fly-in and Aviation day was organized by the great people of Ähtärin ilmailijat (Ähtäri Aviators). I got the opportunity to fly an aircraft that has strong sentimental value to me as I have built one myself many years ago, a Murphy Renegade. This particular aircraft is beautifully finished and equipped with a 100hp Rotax 912 ULS which makes it a true joy to fly. A big thanks goes to Keijo, the owner of this beauty, to let me defy gravity with it.
I just had to duct tape e few cameras to it so that you could get a feel for it too...

I used quite a bit of speed here because I wanted it to look nice for the spectators below. I know that you can make a loop with the Reneged more or less around your head.. Max G's in this flick was 4.8, coming down and about 4 pulling up for the loop. The entry speed for a a loop was between 90 and 100 knots, more than you actually need but they get bigger and look better. Barrel roll, 80 knots nose up 30 degrees and stick to either side. With pitch keep the G's to around 0.4 in the roll.

Happy that you liked it RWB767, I'm not the owner of this Renegade so unfortunately I don't have any plans for it. And from what I remember, the owner said that it was done more or less without any plans anyway. They made the frame first and handed the measurements to a company that blows stuff out of acrylic. It is a nice canopy though, plenty of room and optically very good.

The Gauges are mounted at their standard places no changes there. This renegade never had a rear windshield or coamings. The canopy was made to fit the front windshield. I'm not such a small guy ;-) but it is actually very roomy inside.

The one I want has no firewall forward so I will have to look into a 912. Sometimes people sell the whole forward off of projects cheap.

Basically you could make a Rotax 912 work inverted, especialy the new 912 IS injection model. It would need an oilsystem designed for it (many available as it is a dry sump system) as well as redesigning the fuel tanks or installing an collector tank for inverted flight. The inverted flight would be limited but nobody wants to fly upside down for longer than a minute anyway. The G-limits got down to +4.8 and -2.4 with 2 persons if i remember correctly (not sure). +10 and -6 single.

I was thinking about getting a renegade. Looks like fun on a budget! Do you know of any inverted engine options? Also what are two person g-limits like? thanks

It is a true joy to fly, and fairly easy to build, highly recommended

The VNE is the same, But in the past i have flown my own renegade to 140 kts and due to the drag this is as much as you get without engine power. The 912 have stalled on me during a roll, if you go below 0 G's it stalls immediately but if you remedy the -G's right away it will start up without the electric starter. If the prop stops, remember to put your throttle on idle, otherwise it probably will not start with the starter. Generally its a good idea to keep the G's on the positive side :)

Nice plane; good video. I built a Renegade 2 with a Rotax 503 - OK with one person, but a bit of a dog with two. 6,000 + rivets;110kts Vne. Rated +10 and -6G, but so slow that hard to pull more than 3G. As a RAF pilot I would black out at about 6G, tunnel vision coming first. Aerobatics!!

The 100hp Rotax is a wonderful engine in the renegade. Enough power to overcome the rather extensive drag and enables some pretty decent manouvering as long as you stay on the positive side of the G scale. lovely airplane to fly though. Building it increased my grip strength quite a bit until we bought a pneumatic riveter. Those 4.8mm stainless steel rivets was quite laboursome to do by hand :)

Hello from New Zealand. Can you please tell me if this aircraft had any engine system modifications to allow aerobatic flight. Thanks 👍
@TomArppe
@TomArppe Жыл бұрын
No, it was a totally stock Rotax 912 ULS. You have to stay on the positive side of G forces as the carburetors will stop fuel flow and it stops the engine below 0 G. Oil flow is another concern as well. The Brazilians have made an aerobatic kit for Rotax 912

@@TomArppe Thanks for the reply! I'll see if I can find 'the Brazilians' ... 👍
