Murphy: There is a Strategic & Moral Reason to Care About the Number of Civilian Casualties in Gaza

Senator Chris Murphy on Wednesday spoke at a U.S. Defense Appropriations subcommittee hearing on President Biden’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget request for the Department of Defense. In his questions to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Murphy emphasized the moral and strategic importance of reducing civilian casualties in Gaza and preventing further escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Murphy also called on the Department to restore procurement of Virginia-class submarines from one to two per year. Electric Boat, which serves as the Navy’s primary contractor for the Virginia program, employs over 13,000 people in Groton, New London, and Stonington, Connecticut.

Gen Austin, I have the greatest respect for you as a Warrior and Soldier. However, I take great exception to your comments regarding the Gaza population. Hamas and the Gaza population “are equal.” They are one of the same. The Palestinian-Gaza population have been radicalized for decades. Military planners know this. Gaza civilian deaths are tragic, agree. We know Hamas uses their own citizens as human shields. And what humanitarian aid we can into Gaza through Egypt is confiscated by Hamas, Hamas has learned how to use these deaths to reenforce their PR campaign, shaping world opinion. Who created the conditions for this war? Where is the American PR Campaign and effort to get the American hostages released? When are your national leaders going wake up?

Your experience is limited to US attempts, that have been poor. They have been half hearted, very far from home, with complicated motivation. Israel's conflict with the Arab Muslims is very different. It is existential, so we do not do it half hearted. It is in our back and front yards. And we have clear, and valid motivation. The last six months have proved that Israel is far more capable than the US to fight Hamas and the other Iranian proxies, and far better at protecting civilian population.
