I have a very similar mower that I bought new in 1993. It is branded "White". Same engine. I didn't know they were still making those engines in 2013. I never had a problem with it. No fuel stabilizers, never drained the tank, and there were long periods (years) when I didn't use it. The side-chute bag is useless, however, and I recently bought a rear-bagger because on my new property I need to vacuum up leaves.

Murray make a good mower. Thanks
@Rebel966812 күн бұрын
I finally abandoned my old 20" Murray with its 3.5 briggs classic last year that I bought new back in 2000. The motor is still okay, but the deck is just absolutely shot, lol. The bolt holes for the wheels had rusted out years ago and I bolted aluminum flat stock to its sides and drilled new bolt holes for the non-adjustable wheels. Last year the front and back of the deck began to disappear and at the end of the season I parked it behind my garage. I only ever used it for trim work in places my riding mower wouldn't get. Not being able to find a similar model, I instead went out and bought a Stihl weed trimmer and now use it instead, though I did remove its stock bump feed head and put a European style automatic feed head on it. Me and bump heads just never got along, lol.
@BrucesShop11 күн бұрын
Wow that old mower went through a lot??
@Rebel966811 күн бұрын
@@BrucesShop You could say that, lol. When I first bought it I didn't have so much as a shed to keep it in, so kept it under the back deck its first ten years. The auto shutoff cable broke in that time, so forever after that I just shut it off the old fashioned way, grounding out the spark plug with a screwdriver. The back flap disappeared sometime around 2012. But I always maintained it well. Went through 3 diaphragm gasket sets in that time, 3 oiled sponge filters and changed the plug and oil on it every season. One year I did ask for a set of points for it and was told it didn't have any, lol. I had no idea small engines had also went to electronic ignition. Sharpened the blades on a bench grinder and balanced them on a nail in the wall. After it's second set of plastic wheels' hubs broke out, the third set it got steel wheels with ball bearings. They were about an inch small in diameter, so I just used the bottom bolt holes to keep the frame at roughly the same height. It's 1st ten years it did all the mowing until I got the rider in 2010, then it became the "trim work" mower. Now the rider is 14 years old and all I've done besides regular maintenance to it is this year, putting on a new Nikki carburetor as it was cheaper than rebuilding the old one...and adjusted the valves. It hit 360 hours at the end of this season.

I bought a mower just like this one over 20 years ago and it was an awesome mower and of course it had a briggs on it and just before I moved I mowed almost 3 acres with it due to the fact I sold my riding mower and only had that mower and it ran flawlessly I wish I could have kept it but I sold it when I moved to an apt 15 years ago. Oh by the way the mower I had didn't have that weird gas cap either it was a regular screw on cap. Oh the mower I had over 20 years ago was a briggs classic and it had a screw on gas cap.

briggs had a small white o ring that you could get for tanks that were leaking between carb and tank
@BrucesShop14 күн бұрын
Thanks, I’ll have to look into that.
@fleetwin114 күн бұрын
That goofy gas cap arrangement just helps direct water inside the tank when the outer part of the cap is missing! So, did Briggs make some engines exclusively for Murray? You mentioned something about a larger hole in the plastic linkage. It is easy to see how Briggs "took cost out" of the good ol 92502s to make this "classic model". No cooling shroud around the cylinder, half of the head bracket missing to support the fuel tank, plastic carb, whimpy recoil/no more ball clutch for the recoil either. What is the crazy cover/boot over the spark plug? Some sort of resistor/RFI shield? Hope I get to mess with one of these carbs someday to see how that primer works. I'm guessing there is not actual main metering jet, just a hole in that plastic thingy. Although this is still much better than that awful tecumseh carb with the plastic main jet/spring and swelled oring set up. This will be a great little mower, oftentimes "less is more".

Thanks for your knowledge

@@BrucesShop What knowledge? This engine is a few years newer than the good ol 92502s and 92902s I worked on as a teen in the mower shop. Would love to have the opportunity to work on some newer stuff like this in "retirement". I surely have "alot to learn". Love learning stuff everyday, my struggle now is to remember what I learned yesterday! Again, do you know what the crazy big spark plug boot connector thing is all about? I've seen this set up on other engines, wondering what it is and what it is supposed to accomplish.
@BrucesShop13 күн бұрын
@@fleetwin1 Yes, that spark plug adaptor is a 5 K ohm resistor. You can measure that with a meter. They are not totally required in my little brain but without one, some spark pkug leads are not long enough to reach the spark plug. It is weird as some spark plugs have a resistor in them. Thanks
