He indeed deserves even more recognition than he has. He is such an amazing artist that plays from humility, I love this man, one of the greatest pianists of our time.

So true, esp. the humility part. For most pianists, hard to find the right balance between self-expression, and self-effacing "window washer" servant of the composer. Mr. Perahia to me seeks to overvome this by playing as a true spokesman for the musical tradition, so his playing carries the authority of his lifetime's engagement (and substantial mastery) of that tradition as a whole, which includes that tradition's philosophical underpinnings (engaged at all times by Mr. Perahia). So he's in the "romantic" tradition of deep philosphical and textual exploration, treating music as a philosophical language/medium (as opposed to a kind of modernist formalism or preoccupation with physical sound). He treats every performance as a conversation with a great teacher (that being the composer), with his job being to understand the message, humble, self-effacing, but not negating his own mind & experience as a participant in the conversation. It's always about ideas, never technicianship.

Completely agree. The guy is top class. He has immense musicality, and deep humility- one always gets the sense he serves the music and not the other way round. Deepest respect for Murray Perahia the man and musician.

Murray Perahia's immense gift is that he makes almost everything sound poetical and 'inevitable'. The piece unfolds naturally and logically, so much so that the listener feels as if he could have written it. Perhaia's timing and phrasing are impeccable.

Played it at postgrads recital when I was young, used to hate it and didn’t enjoy it. Now much older I think this is a great set of music with a complex sense of idea and emotions. Murray Perahia performance is definitely one of the best ever.

@AmandaJYoungsАй бұрын
I played the Intermezzo from this before I stopped learning. I love the whole piece, though, and this is a wonderfully muscular, energetic performance with gorgeous subtlety by way of contrast. I love it. I've been listening to it played by different pianists for a while this afternoon and most people seem to play fast and loose with the instructions from the composer to the player, especially when it comes to time. This is a real treat, however.

Undoubtedly a sophisticated musician. Such sincere music making. Just wonder if the 1st movement could be more unbridled. Seems to take the title quite literally. This is Schumann, after all, not a Viennese classical composer.

I would definitely like a bit more fire in the 1st movement especially it's very beautiful but very boring
@mase93082 жыл бұрын
@@dyoneffcennedie2939 the real fire comes in the G minor section at 3:38. plus I don’t think Schumann particularly wanted to add to much, because he’s bringing you on a trip through the different scenes of the carnival in the first movement which he does extremely well.
@dyoneffcennedie29392 жыл бұрын
@@mase9308 and here he's not even playing what Schumann wrote haha. Not that I have an issue with that in the slightest but still worth noting
@mase93082 жыл бұрын
@@dyoneffcennedie2939 you might need to check your sheet music, because I’ve preformed the first and third movement of this piece several times and he plays exactly what’s on the sheet music.
@dyoneffcennedie29392 жыл бұрын
@@mase9308 no he doesn't he takes Michelangeli's idea and plays GDG' in the bass, reducing to a low G octave for the C minor harmony. It's a barely perceptible change like a lot of Michelangeli's alterations but makes a big difference to the overall sound
@Mercuziopianist5 ай бұрын
Finally someone who doesn't run on this piece that everyone plays too fast. Only in this way can we bring out all the sonic and rhythmic folds that this masterpiece allows. But Alicia de Larrocha plays the Intermezzo better.
