Hucbald invented the staff lines. Guido of Arezzo invented the square neums. Together, they created western musical notation. **important people to remember for a music history exam**

Yes, but Guido of Arezzo began a crude staff as well. He had FACE labelled to the left and then colored lines for F and C, so his notation did go beyond just the neumes.

Love these videos. What is the significance of 350 AD that separates it from antiquity? My understanding was that the Middle Ages started in 476 with the fall of the western Roman Empire.

I've just fiound this site - quite late I admit. I wonder where and how to find the music Mr. Adams refers to in his lectures.

I have to respectfully disagree with some information. When he speaks of Nuemes, he shows a picture of square notation. The first Nuemes indeed did not show the exact pitches but lines that went up and down, just reminding you of the melody. But in the picture we do see a notation that shows exact notation of pitches.

350-1400 is grossly incorrect No hate But the technically correct dates are around 480-1350 But I usually just say 480-1603
