Muscle Car Of The Week Video #53: 1970 Plymouth 426 Hemi 'Cuda #1
This week, we bring you one of the pinnacle Muscle Cars ever built, for multiple reasons! You're looking at the very first 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible ever built. Rare because they only made 14 Hemi 'Cuda drop-tops in '70, cool because of the 425 HP 426 cube Hemi V8 under the hood, and even more unique because this is the first one to roll off the assembly line. Dressed in Rallye Red with a red interior and black top, this car even sports a red Shaker hood scoop for more attention-getting fun. Mash the gas and the dual Carter four-barrels open up to provide fuel - lots of fuel - to the hungry Hemi below. The Brothers Collection is home to some awesome cars, but this one is over the top, even with the top down!

This is a beautiful car and color. Seems to me that the 70 Cuda and Challenger has similar body styling as the 69 Camaros. I was raised up on Mopars but I also love Chevys line up. ✔

Another reason this car is so rare: Hemis were built for drag racing, period. BUT most drag strips won't allow convertibles unless a roll cage had been installed. That, plus the fact convertibles often weigh more than hardtops to start with, defeats the whole purpose. And yes, if you want insurance for this thing, drop and spread 'em. Great car regardless [drools].

I thought i may have read that the 1970 Cuda had the hemi Shaker scoop in Red only on a red car while all others got the argent or black. This car was a promo Cuda for the ADS . So maybe this is a rare scoop as well

A guy I know has one of these he bought a number of years ago for $150,000. Says it was the best investment decision he ever made having gone up ten fold. His doesn’t have the shaker hood but sports the AAR style hood over his hemi. The four speed surrounded by the white interior on red carpet with red dash makes his red convertible even more rare. The white hockey stick with intermittent spaces the length of the stripe ends in a replica looking AAR shield with the words in it changed to read “426 HEMI”. I’ve some pictures of it taken at a recent local car show.

Vinyl roof, & special options inside. I foolishly sold not realizing in the 70's how rare it was 😭 If anyone has heard of one & has a picture, please post.

The greatest American car ever made bar none. This is now the most expensive car today selling for $7 million. Nothing ever manufactured in the USA has come close to the 426 Hemicuda. Brilliant, powerful, legendary, exquisite, unique and just the most sought after car in the world. Ferrari has nothing on this car....as it outclassed ALL other cars made in the USA shaming the ordinary GM, Ford, & American Motors cars. Why anyone ever bought Chevy muscle cars convinces me that our AUTOMOTIVE buying public was very childish and unable to see brilliance because they are followers buying what their fathers purchased.

Why did so many of these types of old muscle cars have a family car automatic transmission installed? I don't know one muscle car in High School back in 69 that had an automatic. It just wasn't "manly" for lack of a better word. Automatics were for a girl's car. When you missed a shift, the guys used to say "grind me a pound". However nowadays, the high tech auto transmissions are a different story and are acceptable.
@garywood9525
@garywood9525 8 жыл бұрын
The TorqueFlite wouldn't die and you could add a mechanical tach to watch the RPM's as you shift up manually. Myself , the choice would be a 4 spd manual just because i could replace it for the cost of fixing the automatic . Today's cars with the 8 speed and now 9 speed Auto's to get good mileage over all, are run by computers and few have the actual shift linkage. Trust me , people that want Auto's and can't work a manual are now seeing that when the warranty is over and the tranny goes bad......it can cost from $3000 to $8000 to fix and that's cheap if you owned a Lincoln which can be $12,000 .

I've never been a fan of any auto makers use of fake wood grain. It's cheesy, boring, and makes no sense when it's supposedly being used to allow plastic or fiberglass trim parts or panels to be lighter, and the stylists will trim their faux wood panels with silver chrome colored acrylic paint! Needless to say, had the big auto manufacturers figured out that it's probably more efficient, less expensive, and a better general idea to manufacture vehicles out of carbon fiber,colorized plastics, metals foam rubber, vinyls, cloth, and some outrageously expensive leathers, ... and some guy who spends 20 minutes a month in a vehicle he didn't really need, and has to wash every time it's taken out because the dust buildup will destroy all the moving parts! In any case, mopar should have used carbon fiber panels instead of false wood ones ! Wood looks stupid!

This is truly the greatest muscle car of all time as it makes a Camaro or Chevelle, or Mustang look like a cattle-car full of horses & junk. Those cars are so boring anyway, and were already OLD & OVERMADE by their manufacturer. This car was a dream made for guys who were rich, elite, above the rest, highly educated, & dynamic enough to not be upstaged by this "AMERICAN FERRARI".
