I've been an Allman Brothers Band fan since I was in my teens. I truly love them. They sent me down that Blues rabbit hole. I ended up seeing them in concert over a dozen times between 1980 and 2000. I absolutely connected with Gregg's voice on an emotional, heart and soul level. When most musicians pass on, I give it some thought and realize I'm getting older too. However, when Gregg passed away, it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Hey Josh. I knew him also. Yeah, he was a cool guy. And as you know, he was a really nice guy who definitely had his quite side. The last time I saw Gregg a great guitarist who is a friend of mine called me to say that the brothers were going to come jam with him at a small local club in Atlanta. I dug out my old vinyl of Fillmore East and Brothers and Sisters and took them with me. I saw Gregg sitting in the back of the room with a lady sitting next to him. When I walked over there he looked up and said one of his usual greetings, " How you doing man ". We talked for several minutes and I could tell something wasn't quite right. I asked him if he was ok, he said he had a headache and couldn't get rid of it. I said maybe you should just go to the hotel and get some rest and sleep. He saw the albums under my arm and I said " Gregg, I'm almost embarrassed to ask you if you would sign these for me ". He grabbed them both and signed them. On Fillmore, he signed across the photo of him. I still have those treasures, of course. I sure miss him. What a gift he was to music and all of us. God Bless.

Saw an interview with Gregg recently and he's talking about putting a new band together. Wants to add brass. Have a hunch that after seeing what Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi are doing with brass in their group it sounds like a great idea. He also looks great these days; lost a lot of weight. There was a concert on where all these other artists came on and sang different songs written by Gregg, and he was out there with the 'old gang' himself for a few numbers. Looked like a new man and sounded like the Gregg Allman of yore. They've been in my Top 5 bands since they came out in 1969 and will always be close to my heart. Stuff happens over 45 years but their music is like evergreens; never getting old or passe'. One of the very best ever.

We all talk about Duane’s death and the void he left but we also have to remember Berry Oakley. The music lives on and ABB continues its influence 50+ years later. I’m sure every band below the Mason Dixon line thinks about the ABB and how their influence remains alive even now. Rest well my brothers.

Far too much went on in Sheffield (Muscle Shoals Sound) and Muscle Shoals (Fame) to fit into less than two hours. One of the more interesting things that was left out was Hank Williams Jr. came here to officially break away from singing his daddy's songs. Working at the Music Mill in Muscle Shoals with Charlie Daniels and some of the boys from Marshall tucker is when Hank turned into a rebel. It should have been a many series or almost four hours like the Tom Petty documentary. Johnny Depp is doing a mini-series but it sounds like it's mostly going to focus on the dark side.
@paulareid7478 Жыл бұрын
There definitely was a LOT to pack into a 2 hour movie BUT, it hit the high points according to RICK HALL... With that said, you can fill in some more info from the Movie RESPECT about Aretha Franklin. Also, Tina Turner. 3614 Jackson Hwy. is Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, where the Swampers set up shop after they decided to get out from under Rick's thumb. Rolling Stones, (Brown Sugar, Wild Horses) Rod Stewart's FIRST album in America, "Sailing"; of course, Lynrd Skynrd; Bob Seger; the list goes on forever! The SOUNDTRACK of a Generation, or more came from that little corner in Northwest Alabama! People don't have a CLUE! GREGORY went back and recorded his FINAL ALBUM, "SOUTHERN BLOOD" at Fame. Bookended their career there. He was so sick but, he KNEW what he wanted their legacy to be... such an extraordinary man. A gypsy soul, and a poet's heart, he wore on his sleeve. There will never be another. I miss you, Gregory. ❤

I don't understand: Gregg looks to be in outstanding health, here. Why in the hell would the AB's be calling it quits at this point...? Sad....sad..day for music....
@jaxflfreebird10 жыл бұрын
This may have been filmed ten years ago. Who really knows. Yes, Gregg looks great here but the man does not look great these days. The man is 67 years old, has had a liver transplant, Hepatitis C before the transplant, he had hernia surgery not too long ago, a year or two ago, and he broke or fractured one of his hands at the Wannee Festival in Live Oak, FL in a golf car accident. Gregg has lost a great deal of hair since this interview was filmed. Simply watch any of the televised interviews from just the past couple of years and note how much worse Gregg looks. And Gregg has missed a lot of shows in the last few years due to his constant health problems. He had to go to the hospital in the middle of one of the Wannee shows just a year or two ago. He has had repeated stays in the hospital. And add to that the fact that Gregg simply can't deliver the goods these days. The man can barely project his voice these days and when he tries to be louder or more animated he wears himself out. He also gets lost in songs, comes in too early, forgets lyric and a lot more. Actually the band should have probably called it quits at the fortieth year anniversary of five years ago. I'm not saying the band needed to quit but that they needed to retire from the road while they were still a great band with all of the members being able to perform to the level that this band established. Like it or not Gregg got too old and frail and he became the weak link in the band. And as Gregg famously told Dickey around the year 2000 "Listen to the fucking tapes." Gregg could have listened to tapes of himself singing and playing with the band. Derek and Warren stayed with the band longer than they wanted to simply because the ABB is and was one of the most famous bands on the planet. Nobody wants to see the great bands retiring but as we know there are many who still need to call it a career but they don't and they go on to become shells of bands they used to be.

jaxflfreebird Hey what's up? I see your channel name references Jax,Fl./ Lyd Skyd. I grew up 75 mi. north of there on a little island off Ga. I actually saw the AB's reunion tour at Jax Veteran's Metro Park back in 1989 - even then G.Allman only sat in on 2 songs, then left the stage where Dickey had to take over & basically deal out an impromptu set (they sang Ramblin Man twice). Yea, I can appreciate everything you're saying. I always believed since they let Dickey go, they were more of a "tribute" band than anything else. I used to run into Yonrico (Derek's original drummer) at the laundry mat near my house - this was back in 2000 / 2001 - and he basically told me it was because of Dickey's nasty attitude whenever he got drunk. Which is kind of hypocritical (if true) due to the fact that D.Betts bailed G.Allman out of a lot of bad situations & "flew the flag" for the band when no one else would. Not to mention Gregg rolling over on some AB employees when he was busted for drugs so he could escape jail time , way back when. I feel bad for Gregg though, even though he's had a charmed life, there always seems to be some sort of a "curse" on him, just bad mojo in his personal life - health issues a typical effect of such. I tend to think all those times they ventured into the cemetery in Macon and would hang out and smoke dope & do shrooms may have attracted some kind of evil spirits (just my opinion). It's a shame, the man and the band are def. an institution of American culture. Like you said, it's hard to see such people getting old and not being able to continue like they once did.... Thanks for the response
@jaxflfreebird10 жыл бұрын
***** And thank you for the response. I also was at Metro Park for that reunion tour show back in 1989. That was my first ABB show. The story was supposed to be that Gregg had a bad reaction to a throat medication, I forget what someone called it on the ABB website. And I hate how they did Dickey but I think the band members know better how Dickey would act when he was drunk. I saw Dickey twice at Freebird Live in 2002 and he was kind of a jerk to me the second time I saw him and talked to him. But I know Gregg is just as big a jerk. And the idea of evil spirits in Gregg's life starting at Rose Hill Cemetery, that's something I've never heard someone say. But I've also heard it said that meditation is also a way an evil spirit could enter into your life and it's because you free your mind up and you lose your natural defenses. Personally I don't know how people don't go crazy when they drop acid and do shrooms or other hallucinagenic---sp?? drugs. Anyway, take care.
@markkickmark9 жыл бұрын
how long should they tour? I mean, come on. Moreover, you need some new stuff if you want to tour and they have not released anything substantial in years. Personally, I kind of lost interest when Dickey left.
@hazor7779 жыл бұрын
mark alan G. A band with mult. decades of a career doesn't "need" new material to tour, especially nowadays being that albums (for lack of a better term) don't sell near what they used to. The money is in the touring, these days (pun intended). As far as the differences in the AB's w/Dickey & without : sure, the dynamics changed somewhat, but they were still a top caliber band w/out Dickey. I just look at it as a matter of loyalty, esp. when you consider the years that Dickey took the lead due to Gregg's issues. But such is life, I guess.....
