When I was a teenager in 1968 or so I worked at my parents' grocery store and gas station that was right in the middle of muscle car mania with a Happy Days twist. I remember a State Patrol officer (patrolman Jerry Frith) that came in and gassed up his 1967 427 (AT) Patrol issued Biscayne fairly frequently as he worked out of the Tacoma branch in the Traffic division. We were located about 15 miles due south of Puyallup which was on the way to Mt Rainier. While most of his coworkers were driving Mopar produced Plymouth Fury 3's running 440's at that time. The Biscayne was a maroon color like yours but was a "marked" patrol car and had all of the Washington State Patrol insignias and lights. It was a good looking car! If we were busy he'd park it in the line and leave the keys in it so I could move it up and fill it up when I was caught up. But one time he mentioned that this car "was the fastest used every day cruiser in the State Patrol's fleet". He mentioned having to be careful in the rain not to romp on it too hard when passing another car or he'd "lose the back end when it got squirrely". It was also the thirstiest when it came to fuel mileage probably in the 10 or 12 MPG class and probably used premium (Chevron was the brand we sold) gas too. Anyway I never forgot about the rare Washington State Patrol's maroon 1967 Biscayne with factory "Rat Power" under the hood. And the big teenaged head (and grin) I got when I got to move it up and filled it up at my parents' store and gas station all by myself at age 14. That was a great time and place to be growing up especially if you were like me and liked and enjoyed fast cars....

My very first car was a blue 1967 Biscayne, but nothing like these monsters. Mine was a 4 door 283 with blown head gaskets. I was only 15 years old and paid $60 (three $20 installments) with money from my paper route. It had a 3 in the tree and the roof was pretty badly rusted. I taped it off, sanded it down and painted the roof black to look like a vinyl top. I bought a seat cover, a battery and 2 front tires and drove that car for 2 years. Back when cars like this were cheap and plentiful.

Those were good old days when you can get a non running car for $100 bucks that just needed a few things to get running. I found a 74 Chevy Nova Custom like that. Had it running in one weekend. It turned out it had a 400 ci smallblock somebody dropped in it. I found out when the starter i bought for a 350 block wouldnt fit in it. It's not the same starter for a 400. It has something to do with the siamesed cylinders.

Brings back memories, I was in high school when those car were roaming the streets. My friend went with his father to buy their first car. The father didn't speak or read English, they were Italian. My friend check off biscayne 350hp 327ci, 4 speed, and posi. Back then you could get what ever you want, hence COPO. Needless to say we had fun.

I had a 1968 HK Holden GTS Monaro in the 90s I built had 350 Chev in it. Dam a blew heaps of tyres off it. Used to go to the tyre shop and ask for their old worn out tyres for my Stock rims for Burnouts instead of using my Mag wheels. Goes into the office to pay for fitting the tyres to the rims as I'd blown the other tyres. To come out to the Guys putting the rims on the back asking me to do a Burnout as I leave the shop hahaha.

That 427 is absolute perfection. "Sedan is the plan", as we used to say. This gorgeous Biscayne is just how I would've ordered one in 1966 for racing at Detroit Drag Way, back in the day. If I only had the money at age 20.

As a teen I lived at the last traffic light on the edge of town, where the street lights ended and the street went perfectly straight for about a mile. I used to lay in bed on summer nights with the windows open listening for reving engines, squeeling tires and slamming gears. Those were the good old days!

In Canada, the Biscayne was also called a Pontiac Strato Chief, which was little more than a rebadge Chevy, that wasn't a wide tracking Catalina.

Great Chevrolets ! A mechanic I worked with at a Chevy Dealer had the same 1966 Biscayne with the same 427/425 from the factory.. It was radio and heater delete with the rubber floor mats instead of carpets.,,, You hung on for dear life when that sucker got rollin ! Thanks for posting !

Our local sheriff used Chevy's only one year back then. They were 1969 Biscayne four doors with 427's. The engine out of one of the unmarked cars is in one of my cars.

In 1968 I had a 1967 Biscayne but for some reason my brain thinks it was a Belaire, probably just a misnomer. I had the 427 cu. in. but I don’t think I had 425hp. I seem to remember mine was 385 hp. It had been used as a dragster and I was told the hydraulic lifters were changed out for mechanical ones plus the vacuum advance was welded in a fixed position. Had a hurst shifter and maybe a 3.5 rear end. I’m 75 and doing my best to remember all of this. I loved it as it was a beast for sure and in 1968 was using close to $80 a week in gas. What a sleeper that thing was at a light. Enjoyed this video and thanks for the trip down memory lane. Would welcome any comments on my reply here to elaborate or correct my memory. What a great time that was. I still love big motors. I have a 318 cu.in. 5.2 Chysler V8 in my little 1996 Dodge Dakota. MOPAR!

My freind became the second owner in 1969 of a 66 Biscayne, Aztec bronze/fawn beige interior special ordered and sold new in our town. L72, M21 4 speed, factory 4:10 posi. Only other option was AM radio, heater, and factory tach. Car was super clean with only 15,000 miles when 3 years old. Even though it was a street brawler, he put the L72 and 4 speed in a primered 37 Chevy coupe to run on the strip, it did well. Put a 350 small block and 350 turbo in the Biscayne for a daily driver. 40 years after returning from Nam, he bought the Biscayne and the 37 coupe back. Both are now over the top big block show cars. That 66 Biscayne L72 is still one of my most favorites, will never forget the lumpy sound of the solid cam and my freind banging through the gears.

My brother had a police version. Purchased at public auction from NY State Thruway. Was a 4 door. I think it was a '67.

Hard to believe but in NYS in 1966, the NYS Troopers used these very cars as pursuit vehicles on the NYS Thruway, 427, 4 speeds, two door post Biscayne’s a local wrecking yard bought a bunch of them at auction after they were taken out of service, they all had the 425 hp 427 engines. Wish I’d had a crystal ball back then.

4:88 gears from the factory. That's what I had on my 85 Toyota mini truck 4x4 with 36'' tires, and it was still over geared. Speedometer was like 10 mph behind. That's an insane amount of torque for this car and tire size.

Yeah, horsepower technology was way ahead of tire and suspension technology back then. Of course, tires were incredibly cheap then. They only lasted a little while even if you didn't melt them.

Excellent content. Growing up, one of my neighbors father got a brand new 1967 or 68 Biscayne, four door sedan with a 427. I vaguely remember the crossed flag emblem, but definitely the 427 callout on the fenders. Same maroon color as this one with black vinyl top. Also tan interior. He drove it for years until it stopped running sometime in the late 70’s then parked it, where it sat broken in the carport for a few years before someone bought it... if only I knew as a kid how special that car was.

I like the 66 454 resto. It is setup for the interstate. That to me is the ultimate expression of performance. It can cruise at 80 mph all day long and eat up the miles. The only issue are the mufflers. They are too loud. This car is very similar to the Fallout 2 Highwayman vehicle.

I always love seeing some of the odd cars that have survived from my youth.I remember several SS 427 impalas including one a friend of mine bought new and rebadged it as a 396.He won alot of races with it and was never caught but that car was always breaking something.The engine was warrantied twice with the last time the dealer telling him not to bring it back so he took it easy after that.All the 427s I was ever around broke pretty easy and I think the 396 was way more durable but that's just what I seen.Very nice to see a stripper like this one survive.

A friend of mine bought one of these in primer in the early 70s in Beloit WI , he didn't know how to drive a standard shift so ,they were telling me about it , I said I'll drive it to your place,! I was all Mopar ! Well as we got going and he saw how I drove he said mike see what she'll do ! It must have a 4.11 gear , because when I jumped on it , I was shocked, it was a rocketship with wheels, after barking the tires going into fourth , I looked over at, randy,,,and his eyes were like cups and saucers! He said do it again, what a car, !!!! I later had an Impala with a 454 , auto , a towing package, get this,,,,it was not not running, the price 350 $ a tune and battery, she would fly, but not like that 66 !!!! What a CAR !!!!!!!

I have something close......a '66 Biscayne wagon with a 427. Bought the car in 1974 with a six and powerglide. 327 and TH 400 later that year and with 3.55 gears would run low 16's. In 1977 a 396 for a short time, then the 427. 12 bolt and 454 in 1980. 1989 the 427 went back in and about 25 years ago I added a 700R4 so the RPM's are more sane on the highway. I still love driving it, as much as when I was racing it and it was my daily driver. I made quite a bit of money on the street as it looked so plain jane.

Back in the 1980's, I found and bought a 1966 Chevrolet Caprice 2dr. formal roof car with the original 427 big-block (rated 385hp), Automatic Trans. (column shifted), 12-Bolt Limited-slip rear axle (freeway gears, 3.08 or 3.31:1). It had Power Steering, Power Brakes and Power Windows, but no factory A/C (car had aftermarket add-on A/C, probably dealer installed (?). I restored the car, rebuilt everything, upgraded the suspension (gas shocks, sway bars, etc.) and ran 15x8 Corvette Rally Wheels with 255 tires. Man that car cruised down the highway and handled like a dream. I had presumed that a '66 big chevy with a 427 L72 (rated 425 hp) was (and is rare) but much to my surprise, there were only around 500 big chevy built with the 427/385hp (same engine as Corvette 427/390hp).

Aftermarket parts since day one for the SBC and BBC 10b,12b, m20, m21, th400, th350 even PG - and still selling. Every bit of those cars can be fixed by a shade tree mechanic with no issues what so ever. Try comparing apples with apples.

I was working six days a week 10 hours a day and it was an hour and a half drive to and from work. I made enough that summer to buy mice 1967 GTO 400/four-speed/convertible. When I find out that only three guys ever lived long enough to collect a pension from working with asbestos, I never went back when I got laid off because we finished that construction job that summer. I went to work as a car mechanic in a gas station. Friday nights and Saturday nights I was out drag racing red light to red light. Mustangs were no problem, neither were Camaros or challengers. I had no problem with Buick grand sports, 442s, road runners, GTX, satellites, and furies were a joke. They made all that roar of intake noise, and they didn’t get out of their own way. The king of the streets back then was the 396 Chevelle. I must have raised against six or eight of them. One of them was a Yanko automatic 396. They would always pull me by about a car out of the hole, and that’s it. All the way up to 80 miles an hour, that’s the way they stayed, they would be one car length ahead of me. I never beat a 396 Chevelle.. A couple years later I had a 1968 Dodge charger. That was absolutely the junkiest crappy used most poorly made car I ever owned to this day. No wonder they are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars today on those television auctions. Because there are so damn fuse survivors. They fell apart or rusted apart.. their transmissions were junk, I bought my car from the original owner, when I bought it it was on its third transmission, I put the fourth one in. I think it was called a torque flight. They had those horrible sounding starters, when you start them up they would puff oil.. my headlights would sometimes open the little door is covering them. The rest of the time I had to get out and open them myself with my hands.. The vinyl in the seats cracked, the door handle and window winders broke off, the dashboard is cracked, they rusted before your eyes here in western Pennsylvania. Cars back then always had exhaust system problems. There were minor key Midas speedy muffler shops in every town, there were transmission rebuild shops in every town. .. cars always needed tuneups because they had points, condensers, distributor caps with rotors that would wear out, it was common for every gas station to stock things like thermostats, starters, alternators, points plugs and condensers, distributor caps and rotors, mufflers, tires, brakes, radiator caps, air filters, oil filters, and bulbs for every car because every car needed them very often..A car with 75,000 miles on it back then was junk. Cars always needed ball joints and tie rods.. and the junkiest cars were the Mopar‘s. And today they are the most valuable. don’t feel bad and wish you would have lived back in those days because of the cars, the best thing about the cars in those days was the radios in the music on the radio. The Beatles, stones, Led Zeppelin, cream, Hendrix, the doors, Santana, Yardbirds, The Who, on and on and on, the radio was the best thing about those cars.. today’s cars are the best cars ever. Back then a car did not make it to 100,000 miles. They just didn’t. Today, 200,000 miles is typical even for the cheapest cars today. And today’s cars will actually go around corners fast, and they’ll actually stop, and the fast cars today or the fastest cars ever. and they don’t need a tuneup every year, or an exhaust system every 18 months, or a starter or a carburetor rebuilt every few years, and they don’t burn oil today, and cars today started instantly, and they don’t need water pumps and radiators and fan belts and valve jobs and ring jobs and new transmissions. every town had at least two transmission shops in Mani tuneup shops, as well as alternator and starter rebuild shops. Most gas stations had full-time mechanics on duty and they were busy because cars were junk. So you didn’t miss anything. Today’s cars are the best cars ever..These are the good old days

We can't argue with you. New cars are definitely designed to go 200-300,000 miles. But except for a few, they have no soul.

I agree with that. Even in the 80's and 90's they were still junk and painfully slow. Now, you can have a car that last for hundreds thousands miles , put out better performances and actually hold on the road. Up here, theses cars were ridden with holes as big as my fist in 3or5 years because of the salt and sand in the winter and wouldn't start bellow -20 C. ( It's often colder than that were I live ) and you're right, Chrysler products were renowned for being cheaply made and don't starting when it was cold, Ford's were rust buckets ( especially the torino and maverick) only few GM survived but not mutch longer. And theses hp ratings back then weren't on the wheels, but motor only without accessories. And with the gas prices theses days, it's prohibitive to drive them. Even pick ups aren't very popular here with people who don't need them for working or with a fift wheel. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. I don't care for noises or look. I care for great performance and reliability. And many cars in the sub-compact category outperforms thoses gas guzzlers without any mods. Even the hyundai elantra N.

I had a 65 Biscayne 2 door coupe with the 6 cylinder and 3 in the tree. Build quality was not great then. The transmission linkage kept jamming and you had to get out and free it up with a screwdriver. I installed seat belts and backup lights. Installed an AM radio too. Got rear ended and had leaks after that. Traded it on a 68 Bel Air wagon, 305 V8 with the 3 speed in the tree.

At 11:00, you can see "BUDD" stamped into the frame rail!!! Budd made lots of stuff for the big three - perhaps most notably, the cab for the old Ford C series cabover trucks.

My first car was a '66 Bel Air 283 automatic. Great gas mileage. (That mattered in 1972 when gas was 50 cents a gallon!) Never burned a drop of oil.

I believe it was the OPEC led oil crisis of autumn ‘73 before gasoline consistently reached fifty cents a gallon.

@@fairfaxcat1312 It hit 50 cents in Minot the summer of 72 because of the vast number of airmen at nearby Minot AFB. We could charge gas on our military ID, but had to pay the higher price while it was 39 cents a gallon 50 miles away.

My grandfather owned a '58 Biscayne with a straight six, base model in coral. I never realized Chevy did this later to the Biscayne model. I was more familiar with the Chevelle muscle cars.

The secound car I owned was a 1966 Biscayne 283 ci which after a couple years a friend and I pulled the stand column shift 3 speed out and put in muncie 4 spd and a 3.42 rear end
