I might be a die-hard Mopar fan, but if you don't like this 427 Shelby, you got rocks for brains. What an incredibly beautiful car, manufactured during a Time when a lot of other vehicles didn't look so sweet. This car and this engine literally knocked it out of the park. One really beautiful Ford

Had a friend in high school who got ahold of a '67 Fairlane w/ one of those side-oilers and that car was a torque monster! He could be cruising down the highway at 60 MPH, downshift into third and smoke the tires. Had another friend who bought a '70 Hemi 'Cuda, just a few months later and these two raced each other several times, each race being a coin-toss, as they traded back and forth wins/losses. Fun times.

When I was in high school in the early 80's you could get cars like that for a song, nobody wanted them back then except for us gearheads, there was no real collectors market for them back then they were just considered by most people to be used cars that were gas hogs, how I'd love to go back in time and pick up a half dozen or so of those cars that are selling for $100,000+ that back then were just $500 to $1,000 used cars that nobody cared about.

@@Tusuperbis Yep, we had it made when it comes to those kinds of cars back when I was a teenager, I didn't see what was going to happen to the price of them over the years back then though or I'd stocked up on some. It's ok though, the fact is they make even better ones now, I mean there's soccer mom's driving vehicles that'll hit 60 from a dead stop faster then even the best of them from back then, they'll go around a corner much faster and they'll stop from 60 mph in much less distance, and better yet you can get something like that that's just a few years old for a fraction of one of those old cars. If you ask me we're living in the golden age of horsepower right now.

P&Wfan 69 and 70 Shelbys are beautiful, but they are not really Shelbys, they were made by Ford and used the Shelby name, 1967 was the last of the more or less true Shelby Mustangs. Just like today the Shelby is made by Ford or you can have one done by Shelby American, which would be a true Shelby, but at least until his death, Shelby the man still had a hand in the features and functions of the new Shelby Mustang. The 68-70 were more Ford than Shelby. And he had no part of production.

with today's tech a 428 can push out 570 hp from a stock block. That is beyond any 427 of the 60 era. As to keep it streetable you don't want to go over 600hp... So yeah 427 is cool and 428 is just as cool.

@@markperry2827 Ok, uh, a 428 Police Interceptor, which is what's stock in that GT500, isn't built durable like a 427 Medium Riser. Those could make 500 hp pretty easy. Add a supercharger and it would surpass anything a 428 could do a not blow apart either. Just saying.😁

The 427 needs to be stroked to smooth out the idle and increase the low RPM torque. A 4.25" stroker kit will increase its displacement to nearly 480 CID.

I missed out on the '68 Shelby with the 427ci motor by a couple of months. Was ready to buy a Shelby in July '68, found out that the 427/400HP had been DISCONTINUED (a REAL pisser) ended up with the GT 350 convertible. It was ALL SHOW and VERY LITTLE GO, BUT it was one HELLUVA CHICK MAGNET!

He missed one big difference between the 427 and 428, and that was that 427's were assembled by hand, while the 428's came off the assembly line like all the other FE blocks

@@arkhsm exactly. THE only REAL difference. Everything else, was because of that difference. One over bore on a 427, then you're sleeving the block or getting a new one. Which is WHY it needed to be stronger. Over square, bored to the limit from the factory. Also why it had to be hand built, much tighter tolerances. Vs the under square 428 that was much more forgiving.

I owned two 67 Shelby GT 500's. The first was a 428 with a C-6. when I was in the U.S.A.F. The 428 was a great motor it produced more torque at lower r.p.m.'s than the 427 and was quicker up to 60 m.p.h. versus the 427. The 427 came on at a higher r.p.m. and was quicker above 70 m.p.h. The second one I owned had a top loader 4.10 drag pack with a 427 side oiler , it ran dual quads also, a bad ass girl, I got 4-5 m.p.g. around town and 6 to 9 on the highway. With a 16 or 18 gallon tank I watched the gas gauge needle move real quick to empty

Dealer installed and documented 427 engines do not detract from the value, back "in the day" there were many dealer options for all cars, the key is to be documented as a dealer upgrade.

"Back in the day", 1959, we had a Ford dealer in St Paul that could "special order" a '59 Ford (any model) with the 430ci, Lincoln BB. It was SO easy because the T-Bird had that as an option.

The 427 does detract from it's value. There are two documented 427 dealer installations. The other is the Supersnake. This isn't a dealer installation nor is it listed in the registry. It's all a nice story without documentation. I have a 65 427 side oiler in my Shelby but I don't try and BS people that it was dealer installed. I'm the second owner and have had my car since 1982. Hands down the best looking Shelby Mustang of all. There are absolutely NO 427s installed into any mustang on the ford production line ever. Not that they're shouldn't have been.

@@mustardstain504d6 I have a 63 Ford falcon futura Sprint with a 289 hypo from the factory. Everybody told me that that motor could not have come in that car cuz the 289 hypo wasn't available till 64. But this was a late run car and it has the old 289 bellhousing it was only available on the super early 289's. The car is also alternator car and not a generator which is what would come on a hypo. The car is kind of a freak car. We've done a lot of investigation to figure out what the deal is the motor is definitely been in the car since new because the car has been in the family since new and we know all the history. Whether or not it was put in by the factory or whether or not it was put in by the dealership is the mystery. Technically Ford never built a 289 hypo 63 falcon. It should have the 260 with a generator. But here it is right in front of me. Point of story I'm getting is you never know what was done at dealerships maybe somebody f***** up and blew it up goofing off on the lot and the engine was stuck in without anybody knowing. As someone who's worked at a car dealership lots of times cars get crashed and they're quickly repaired and it's never put on any record. I worked at a Chevy dealership about 8 years ago when a lot attendant crashed a ZL1 Camaro into the side of a garage door. The car was quickly repaired and put right back on the lot like nothing happened somebody's driving that car today and has no clue it was wrecked. I can see a scenario where a lot attendant blew up an engine and with the 428 being a brand new engine maybe it was hard to get but easier to put a side oiler in it. And it was just never documented to save someone's job. I don't know why my falcon has a 289 hypo Ford never made this car and yet it was bought brand new in February 1964 by my grandfather and it's been in his possession until he died and I got it and neither one of us have ever put an engine in this car.

I put a 427 medium riser in place of a 428 CJ in my 69 Mach I. Big difference at the track ! But light to light on the street pretty close with the two engines. Traded the car in at a dealership in Louisiana. Love to have that car back.

Thanks for the narration. One other detail, the 427 came with sodium filled exhaust valves and hollow intake valves, hardened valve seats and solid steel crankshaft. HIgher compression. It is the ultimate engine for a Ford enthusiast and the engine that powered the LeMans GT40s. Yes, I agree totally with you the 427 was the cream of the crop and also Ford's NASCAR engine. I installed a 427 MR in my Galaxie a lifetime ago. Amazing engine.

it is an FE. There are no big block FE mills. To explain why... A 360 truck block is basically the same as a 428 block minus the crank stroke. Many parts interchangeable. The 289 / 302 is a windsor block. Apples and oranges.

I fell in love with all things Shelby at age 9, when my oldest sister drove down from San Antonio, TX in this car, the same year, model engine, and color. What a ride. My sister bought her car at a Ford dealer with the 427. I later became a Shelby dealer and talked to Carroll about my sister's car. He told me that there were a few early GT500 built with the 427. They were racing the 427 FE and putting them in the 427 S/C Cobras. They quickly switch to the 428 because of weight, cost, and availability. The 427 FE side oiler was heavier and more expensive than the 428. As a dealer I had the CSX 4000 series which was the 427 S/C. I drove often, it was a Ride. The Side Oilers used by Shelby today is an aluminum block, heads, and intake and closer to 500 cid than 427. I retired and sold my interest to my business partner and her flaky boyfriend 10 years ago. But what a ride.

One of the most significant differences between the 427 and the 428 was the bore/stroke ratio. The 427 was of a greater bore vs. stroke which means lower piston speed which means higher RPM. The larger bore in the 428 equates to more of a torque motor.

In 1972 we were driving down Anaheim Blvd. (Anaheim, CA) At Ball Road we saw an Acapulco Blue GT-500 and we bought it for $1,850....yes under $2,000 bucks. It came from the factory with the 428 Police Interceptor engine and 3.25 non-posi. rear-end. We pulled out the 428 and dropped in a 0.030" over 427, solid lifters .610" lift cam, cross bolted main bearings, "O ringed" block, flat top TRW pistons (11.0 to 1) Total Seal moly gapless rings. balanced by ENGINE DYNAMICS, Garden Grove, CA 2 x 4bbls. WOW We added 4.11 locker rear end and a Hurst Dual-Gate hydro shifter I'M almost 70 years old and still have it TODAY NEXT project if I live long enough is 428 crank in 427 block = 459 CID maybe we'll put a 390 label air cleaner on top!!

I restored a 68 gt500 for a friend which included rebuilding the engine. It was all stock except for some minor head work and a bigger cam. The owner was all concerned if it would still "chirp" second gear. It will spin the tires through all three gears until you let off! I'm gonna say the 428 was way under rated at 355 HP.

Of course the 427! Drive it the way it was meant to be driven for certain. It is always interesting to learn these facts about these beloved automobiles. My friend's brothers were older than us, and her eldest bought a Shelby Cobra GT 350 in the white with blue stripes. Her other brother bought a Boss 302. The first time I rode in the GT350, the car literally threw me back into the seat- it was exhilarating to say the least! The Boss 302 was the yellow with black stripes, and went like a bat out of hell. When both brothers were drafted and before they left for Vietnam, they put both of their Mustangs in their parents back yard on blocks. No one but the rightful owners were going to drive those machines!

I bought one in 1967 for just over $7,000.00 it had the two headlights in center of grill and the 428 with two 4's, the upholster was buckskin with forest green exterior. Man would I love to have it back! not sure of accuracy of the speedometer but mine did exceed that 140 mark (one time) and drove as good at that speed as it did at 50. Also still think that the 67 body style was the best oh all SHELBY's

Glad you said that. Why? Everyone says that it had a list price of $4200. NOT SO. When the 67 Shelby came out I took my father ( no choice I was just turning 18 and needed a co-signer) to the only dealer in the NY area that had them ( White Plains Ford). My dad or any dad at that time had no clue what a muscle car was and they compared all high priced items to the cost of a new Cadillac. At that time a new Caddy nicely equipped was $5500. When we entered the room with the Shelby's, there were 4 of them and if I remember correctly they were all blue. I think the same as in this vid. The first thing my father did was go to the sticker. It was a whopping $7200 He turned and looked at me and said "are you out of your effin mind? I could buy a Cadillac and a half for that price". Enter, his friend Lou Pandolfi a Pontiac dealer. What did I end up with? A 1968 GTO that was the worst car I ever owned. Plymouth Fury's would destroy me. It was a lemon. I traded it in in 71 for a 454 Chevelle super sport So, when you mentioned 7k I now realize that I'm not crazy . It was $7200

John Mcclane honestly John. I really don’t have a clue. I didn’t know much about them. I wasn’t really a Ford fan. I just loved the look of that car. I would have even been happy with the GT 350. In fact( supposedly) they were more fun to drive than the 500 I remember Hertz was renting them and people were switching parts on them. They were all black with gold stripes and I heard they’re worth more than the basic model. Now I’m an old man and I drive a Ford Mustang GT. When I was 23 I bought a Thunderbird , then an Eldorado , a Riviera , a Chrysler 300M and so on. No sports cars. When I moved to Florida I eventually bought a GT convertible which I love You know that midlife ( or past midlife ) thing? Those 67 Shelbys were the best looking cars ever( imo)

My sister bought this very model , even the same color, 427. Purchased new in 67 from a Ford Dealer in San Antonio, Texas Carroll tells that early in the 67 Shelby GT500 run he did put 427s. Because of this car I had a life long love of things Shelby, including becoming a dealer for Shelby. Being a dealer allowed me the opportunity to visit with Carroll many times. I never owned a classic Shelby Mustang, but did own a genuine Shelby CSX Cobra 427 S/C which had the 427 FE Side oiler.

My boss back in the 70s had one. It had a 427 with dual quads. His brother took it out to Arizona and claims he raced it in a slalom. The transmission (auto I think) lost first and second gears but he still won the race. After that he had it painted, detailed and hardly ever drove it.

My twin brother had a 1967 GT500 with the 428 c.i. motor w/ 2 4-bbls and a factory Hurst 4 spd. The car looked great, but had a few fatal flaws. The front biased weight distribution was such that shifts from 1st to 2nd, caused the rear to jump off the ground rather than lurch forward. The Hurst shifter throws were long and slow. The active rear air ducts and the duck tail rear spoiler allowed exhaust fumes to be sucked into the rear of the passenger compartment so much so that the cabin grew smelly and smoky. The 2 4bbl setup was vacuum initiated and seemed to be inclined to run off 2 bbls of one of the 2 4 bbls and then the vacuum linkage would misbehave so that the throttle would resemble an on-off switch. On one memorable occasion I borrowed the car to pick up a date and, in only 25 miles, the car had consumed a half tank of gas. With all these flaws, it was still a lot of fun!

What you described is accurate with these cars, have owned my GT 500, 49 years. Know all about there misgivings, back in the day when I bought mine. These things were beat to death . Engines destroyed, I have 390 boared, 428 scj bottom end, duel quads, 390 gear, Detroit locker. Have a bad day, no sweat, do a 100 foot burn out. Happy once more. Absolutely love this car. Daughter loves it too. She gonna have to wait. I am not done!

I purchased a pre-owned 1967 GT 500 in 1968, and the 428 had to be rebuilt. The rear main bearings failed. But the rebuild was solid, and I had the entire car worked over to make it fresh. Wish I still had that car!...

They all should have been built with 427s. the 428s just never did these cars any justice. Thats why I love the GT350 so much more because it was a much more custom package than the GT500 mainly because they took a lot more care to upgrade everything about the car rather than the GT500 which was essentially just a heavy duty factory big block swap with a dress up kit. Honestly if I were purchasing a Mustang in 67 id save the money and buy a 390 GT like the one in Bulitt and just spend my money making that one more capable. That is, if you're ruling out the whole "collector value down the road" aspect which nobody was considering at all back then so it's not really something you can factor into the argument haha

They couldn't be equipped with 427's. That engine was far too expensive to produce and would priced the cars out of the reach of most would be owners. Shelby toyed with the idea and did build one with an original 427 as a market test to see how it sold. But it was too expensive and sat unsold for a very long time. Eventually, two well paid airline pilots went in together to buy it. A '67 GT500 might not be as quick as the '68 GT500KR but in a drag race, it would whip a 390 GT mustang or a GT 350 provided it wasn't ordered with the Paxton supercharger.

In '67 my dad test drove a Shelby 500 and bought a 350; which he believed had the best handling of the two. The 427 side oilier was FAR superior to the 428 and would certainly be my choice!

There were three doccumented 427 cars. This one isn't one of them. The factory 67 cars did not have sequential tail lamps. While the 428 doesn't have the pedigree of the 427, they are strong running reliable engines. Perhaps the fault that gave them a bit less favorable reputation was oil starvation on hard acceleration, which was addressed by adding another quart of oil and a dipstick change to indicate normal levels with that TSB Ford released. The cam that was used by shelby is the same used in the 390 cars, as was the valvetrain with the weak designed two piece spring retainers. The cam's usable power band is over under 5000 rpm. Despite it's flaws, the 428 in Shelby trim put out close to 400 hp.

My dad bought a 67 mercury cyclone that was a W code and it was fast, when I was ten or eleven i watched him out run 5 GTO's at Ravenrock dragstrip in Portsmouth Ohio. With a 389 and decent tires and dads super tune it turned a 12.17!!

When I went in to order my 69 Fairlane I told them I wanted the 390hp 427. Sorry they said, you can no longer get it, but you can order a 428 Cobra Jet. No, you wouldn't want the Super Cobra Jet version. It has the same horse power rating and it cost more. Yes I did.

No doubt the 427 is a monster, but the 428 is a fine engine as well. The FE block was very durable. I've never owned a 428, but had friends that did. I've owned one 360 and 3 390's. Great engines.

The 428 is a motor that is reliant on its low end torque and cannot breathe at higher rpms. Great for smoking the tires. The 427 was built to run with higher gear sets at Lemans and makes its power over 5000 rpm. Two completely different motors.

From what I understand, there was only one 1967 GT500 Super Snake delivered from the Ford factory with the FE 427 side oiler, and that was to Carroll Shelby himself for use in the Goodyear tire test.

I remember some rich guy from River Oaks in Houston, had a side oiler in a 1969 GT500. I have a friend in South Houston that runs a fabrication shop, that had a man show up hauling a twin engine cabin cruiser/fishing boat and asked if he was willing to swap the two V8's in the boat for Chevy 502's. Buddy asked the man what are you going to do with the old engines and the guy says you can keep them. They were both 427 cross bolted mains, side oilers. They came new with the boat and Buddy talked to the new owner's mechanic in Las Vegas that opened them up to see what they needed. All they needed was to be put back together. NO wear, pristine and clean. I remember Buddy telling me that he offered the engines for sale to kit car builders and owners of real Shelby's to see if he had any takers. This was in the mid 1990's when all the used blocks were trash and people were looking everywhere for them. Buddy said that he couldn't get a nibble from them. He finally sold the pair to a marina owner in Nevada. Great video! Keep up the good work.

Isn’t it odd that the 427 here has a single Holley 4V while the Police Interceptor 428 had 2 4’s?Shelby could always be counted on to do something unusual. Amazing pony car muscle. Then in 68 came the GT500KR, CJ and SCJ 428. Single 4V. So many options for the original pony car.

There are only 3 1967 GT500 cars that left the factory with a 427 motor, one of them is the all popular 1of1 Super Snake ...The rest of the talk about 427 side oiler cars is hearsay ! great video[s]...i admire them very much,...i have read and been told, the 427 option if it was dealer installed with proper date code, technically shouldnt hurt the retail price. many dealerships installed the 427 crate motor before the car was sold, also rather than spend money hopping up the 428, buyers optioned for the 427 in the first few weeks of ownership. not to mention warranty issues and options. ive even heard proper receipts and paperwork helps. now im not saying a hardcore purist, may not insist on a 428 car for his investment dollar, just want the skinny on the ford.......loophole

My dad almost bought that 427 car except the dealership said “ you have one to many kids with you so I can’t let you leave the lot , it’s against the new law. So my dad bought the 68’ Torino GT 302v8 in red with white interior, hood scoop with directionals and ford factory white stripes. That Torino GT had space for whole family so dad bought it.

I've read that only 3 GT500's were built with the 427. I was used to the inaccurate info about 50 GT500's built with the 427. 3 being built appears to be the correct info

Three is correct, Nos 289, 544 (Super Snake) and 1947 (Factory Drag Unit). All three are known and accounted for.
