Fantastic video! There's not a lot of coverage on non-included VSTs for MuseScore 4 and their compatibility when it comes to communicating all the proper markings. I haven't gotten to try out any of mine with MuseScore to see how they would work - I am a heavy Kontakt user though so I am very happy to see that you've covered it and that it works so well!

as musescore is an open-source project always ongoing some updates, like minor tweeks here and there, I'm sure that the "Working with VST and VSTi" forum in musescore's forum page will be updated in some time in the foreseeable future.

I wouldn't expect velocity to work for dynamic for anything except percussion, or pizz / col legno. It's normal to use CC11.

How did you get Kontakt to work? Did you need to change anything in MS or in Kontakt? I have tried to get Kontakt to work in Windows 11 and on my Mac Mini M1, and I can not get a sound to play in MS on either if I use Kontakt. It loads and opens in MS but will not play a sound.

In Muse Sounds, solo violin 2 seems to sound much better than solo violin 1 and is also a bit better balanced.

I came to this video looking for help. I added a VST drumkit (Monster Drums by Agus Hardiman) with brush sounds. The sounds that don't map to the standard "large drum kit" in MuseScore are simply silent; they don't play. I found the corresponding note (D#1) and gave it a name in the "edit drumkit" dialog. It shows up on the list of available drum sounds when I go into entry mode, but both the sample at the bottom and the note in the staff are silent.

You could always try the free version of Dorico, you'll get more out of your sample libriaries in that notation software (I know your limited to 8 instruments) but at least you can do expression mapping!

Thanks for this video... I would like to ask how to handle patches with multiple articulations like for example Spitfire Solo Strings multi patch with several articulations. Do you use MIDI CC to switch from one articulation to another? Many thanks and best regards, MaxT

Have you tried right clicking on the knobs that alter the volume and dynamics and clicking "Learn CC Automation"? I believe MuseScore uses CC2 and LABS and other Spitfire Audio products like BBCSO uses CC1. Maybe try that and see if that works?
@Joe-blogcomposer

I tried using my faders that were mapped to those CCs but they didn’t seem to do anything, and I’m wondering how to program that into MuseScore 4 as well, if there any markings I could use or change CC values. of certain markings… this is why I use Logic Pro X for these sorts of things 😂

@@Joe-blogcomposer Yeah, I guess DAW is probably a good idea for things like that. I don't have a MIDI Keyboard, so whenever I tried crescendos etc in Reaper (my DAW) and I would use BBCSO Discover andI right clicked on the faders they have on there andjust clicked "Learn CC Automation". So I just presumed that could maybe be the case (this was before switching to Muse Sounds btw.) I'm sure there will be a way around doing it in MuseScore 4, considering there is a way around keyswitches.

@Joe-blogcomposer

Sadly I don’t, but it might be worth periodically exporting it as MusicXML which you can then reopen in muscore, and a less likely file type to corrupt

This is very useful as I'm considering Musescore4 and wondering if any VST worked well. Can you do a video about or comment on how well Musescore reads xml files if I want to import my scores from my current software. I am considering a move to either this or Dorico which has EastWest templates built in (I got for 60% off last year but haven't been able to use in Notion 6.

I actually do a short on this - kzbin.infobv38N48oV14?feature=share - In short Yes MuseScore reads XML files very well, if your transferring to Dorico from MuseScore or the other way around. Hope this helps!

Many thanks for this. I've got Kontakt Komplete Kontrol showing up in the MuseScore mixer (VST/Native Instruments/Komplete Kontrol) but when selecting it the Kontakt window with instruments is very small and I can't make it bigger, so very difficult to work with. And although I can hear the instrument when I click on it, there's no sound when playing Musescore itself. Other software needed perhaps? Any suggestions most welcome!

Thanks, but if I want to keep using MuseScore, are there any fixes for the two problems I've mentioned? You were able to get Kontakt working in this video so there must be something I'm missing in terms of the window size and the sound not playing (I'm using Windows 11). @@Joe-blogcomposer

@TWClark3 hmmm I’ve personal not experienced those issues, as I use Mac OS, I don’t know if it could be an issue with MuseScore and Windows 11 with regards to window size. When you switch the instrument back to Musesounds does it work fine? This could be something to do with range, or certain midi not triggering it. I’ll look into it.

I think the biggest problem with fully implementing VSTs in notation software is the complexity of mapping out MIDI CCs and envelopes in a way that works well in MuseScore. To begin with, some VSTs control dynamics using expression or mod wheel (or even both, in some instances), or velocity in the case of non-sustaining instruments, while cheaper ones might instead just use volume. These inconsistencies are probably the reason why Kontakt worked so well but not BBC Orchestra or Labs - it happened to use exactly the option MuseScore likes. So there needs to be some way for you to customize the choice of MIDI CC that is used to control dynamics (perhaps in staff/part preferences or as a menu on the actual Mixer entry). This also applies to other CCs that are used to control other elements of performance. On top of that, some CCs do different things at different ranges, meaning the exact value it takes on also needs to be defined with each marking. This, of course, only applies to performance parameters that are part of the visible score. What about more nuanced expression such as control of vibrato, which might not be written in the score? Perhaps timeline view might come in handy here, with the ability to add DAW-like CC envelopes. Then there's the whole mess of keyswitches, which are completely different from VST to VST, so you have to be able to assign a given keyswitch to expressive text markings (including custom text). Also, some VSTs have velocity-sensitive keyswitches, in which the velocity a keyswitch is pressed at causes it to do different things. So that must be defined as well with the expressive text. Also, keyswitches need to be pressed slightly before the note they apply to, or else the current note will play using the previous keyswitch setting. So how is this offset interpreted? The thing is, many of these abilities are already present in a DAW. So if this is implemented into MuseScore, it would become a hybrid of traditional notation software and a DAW. This is quite complicated and likely out of the scope of the MuseScore development team, but I think it could eventually be possible. If nothing else, perhaps that coule be possible as a plugin.
