At least, both gave amazing performance even though on the roag to destroying their chords in the process. And yet here he is singing at 60 and pretty damn good I might add. People say how much better Staley was for this style but personally I don't hear such control or clean high notes ever in the live performance of would by alice in chains. I mean he had the perfect voice for those songs, not a perfect singer by any means.

I love both bands too, but perhaps you don't know that Metallica was in the audience when Alice in Chains performed their Mtv unplugged concert AFTER they had made fun of him. That's why Mike Inez had put on his bass "Friend don't let friend get haircuts". I think they buried the hatchet long ago. This is awesome. Seeing Metallica cover this AiC classic with such respect, reverence & quality adds to the legacy of both bands. On another note... The missing element, a live event with an audience, is sad, though as a longtime fan of both bands to me it sounds excellent just the same. I think those of us who've seen lots of concerts in our lifetimes can't help but lament the way things are these days. Acknowledging it's possible that the simple things we took for granted, like concerts, may never happen again is beyond depressing.

I saw Alice in Chains on the Clash of the Titans tour in 1991. The three co-headliners were Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth, three of the Big Four of thrash metal. AiC was fairly heavy and hard, but they weren't exactly thrash, and the crowds were not exactly sure what to think of them. (That may be putting it mildly). When "Would" came out, though, it was in heavy rotation on the local hard rock radio station, and the frantic, despairing sound really resonated with me as I was dealing with a turbulent (and ill-advised) relationship. Now, more than two decades later, the biggest of the Big Four have given us this superb rendition of "Would" and thus proven that Alice in Chains really was metal all along. 😉
