If you soak the log in water for a few days before drilling and inserting the plugs, you will have a much better chance of propagating your spawn. Using a garden hose sprinkler with a timer, will give you better control over how often the log receives water. Growing mushrooms on logs sounds easy, but if not done right... you won't see any results.

I had a log with spores already added. I kept it in a damp container, but it just got moldy.

i soaked my logs in a tiny backyard garden pond. drilled holes and used dowels to inoculate. after four years no mushrooms. i saw that if you hit it with a hammer it will cause the mushrooms to grow. i hit the logs with a big rock and they have been producing mushrooms for the last 5 years

Not that simple. I watered a log and it grew other fungi and never produced the mushrooms. Also tried straw and got a horrible case of mites that literally are all the mushrooms and again other fungi grew on it also.
