I go to a burnt forest in Washington State with a friend to hunt, and find, a few different types of burn morels. Morels are maybe the most highly prized edible fungi in the world, and they like to grow where the trees and soil have been scorched by a wild fire. In the western United States these kind of fires happen every year, in fact they're quite natural, and the following spring you can often find morel mushrooms growing in abundance in these areas. The first 'flush' of morels in a burn are the "conica's," a common name given to early season morels, by commercial morel pickers. These are Morchella sextelata or Morchella eximia. They are indistinguishable by macro features, and have morphological plasticity so they come in a lot of shapes and sizes, so without DNA sequencing its impossible to tell them apart. The next flush is usually a mix of more prized, dense and meaty morels known as "Greenies" or "Pickles," Morchella exuberans. These have a thick, greenish flesh with a double interior wall and hold up well to weather and harvest. The most prized are the "Greys" or Morchella tomentosa, and these are think, meaty, and fuzzy when young. They can range from grey to black and even get yellow in older age. We are out to discover all 3 species on this episode of Mushroom Wonderland.

We will not accept any responsibility for negligence or accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or plants. These videos are not intended to be a definitive field guide, but rather a starting point to become familiar with habitat, Everyone is encouraged to do their own studies, acquire literature or internet resources to safely and confidently identify wild foods before they eat them. When eating a new wild mushroom, it is advised to start with only a small amount, and make sure that it is fresh and that it is cooked thoroughly. Some mushrooms do not agree with certain individuals, and this is typically discovered on a case-by-case basis. Even the most edible of mushrooms contain compounds that can be tough for the human digestive tract to handle. Some “edible” species have small amounts of certain toxins that will easily break down with cooking. Fungi contains a molecule known as chitin that is the same thing that makes the exoskeleton of shellfish so hard, and cannot be broken down by the human digestive system, so it is another good reason to thoroughly cook mushrooms. All the ideas expressed in the comments should be taken with a large grain of salt. I don’t think there is any other field of study or science that has more misinformation being shared so freely and boldly. Mushroom Wonderland and Aaron himself have no opinion and neither encourage nor discourage the use of mushrooms containing mind-altering compounds. These mushrooms contain powerful chemicals and should be treated with a high level of responsibility. Any video topics on the habitat, natural distribution, and morphological features of psychoactive mushrooms portrayed on this channel are purely for scientific and educational purposes.

Early morals are about done now... but burns are in! Stay under 1,500ft. I was snowed on yesterday @ 2,000. Nothing sticking, but Snow is steady @ 4,000ft I was out yesterday with my youngest son. His first time. We came home with 3/4 of a homedepot bucket full. Mixed of blacks/ naturals/ blondes/ even doubled wall greens! We battered about 2-1/2 lbs this late morning for lunch! 🤤 super! 👍 lol😅 filled the dehydrator up & giving away about 2lbs to friends who have no time to pick & others who are in their late 80' & wheelchair bound. That week long rain did good to them. It kept people out of the patch I've been picking & gave time for them to balloon up. Lots of them golf balls to tennis balls size! Going back out again before this rain Saturday! Hopefully, a full bucket this time! 🤞✌️

I love watching you harvest morels. Unfortunately I can't eat them. They make me sick even when well cooked. Bummer!

Gotta love it when someone blows up small burns by posting them on youtube for a couple likes. Now there are 15-20 rigs parked at the gate and every pull off along the road everyday....... For the locals that typically have to travel far to find any real quantity, we appreciate you needlessly posting the gate, parking area and all of the other landmarks and new tree flags 👍🏽

If you recognize the gate or flags you are already there, doesn't have anything to do with me. I do try to keep quiet about where exactly I am, but I understand your sentiment. It's for education and some people have actually been able to find their first ever morels because of videos like this. As I encounter people at that spot, surprisingly almost nobody knows who I am, save for one guy who follows me to all my spots. If you've been to that spot and came away empty handed, it's not because of the other people picking it. There are lots of mushrooms out there. Sorry if you feel like I'm to blame for the popularity of that burn. It's one of the only accessible burns going on this spring, sorry if you're a 'local.'

Really you should blame the National Interagency Fire Center for publishing all those burn locations on the internet from the moment those fires started.

Well, from everyone I talked to, it's the mycological societies posting about it on Facebook. But it really takes an eye to see them.

I saw a morel on a roadside hill the other day that was as big as a squirrel & no place to pull off to check it out. Only reason I saw it was the wind was strong & made it wag back & forth.
